So how does that result leave things in the Championship?

Well, Huddersfield's victory ensures they will be in the play-offs and leaves them a point behind second-placed Bournemouth.

But the Cherries have three games in hand as they look to wrap up automatic promotion.

I thought they could maybe push for top 10, perhaps a run at the play-offs but they've been superb.

To have this level of consistency and to have got this from the players is phenomenal.

Tom Kirby: I’ve sat and watched four hours of football at Wembley with no goals in the past few seasons (two playoff finals 0-0 aet, won on pens) and can’t wait for the next one

Roger: Not sure Terriers are ready to go up, but lot said that about Brentford

As a man who was at both of those Town play-off finals I really hope that if Huddersfield do make the play-off final it's a bit more of a spectacle than either of those matches.

Relegation after a season of struggle, featuring just six wins from 43 games, ends an eventful three-year stay in the second tier for the club who have played more games at this level than anyone else.

They avoided relegation with a last minute winner in the final match of 2019-20 and then went on a terrific run of form to finish fifth last season.

However, boss Valerien Ismael and influential skipper Alex Mowatt both left for West Brom in the summer.

Ismael's replacement Markus Schopp won only one of his 13 games in charge, a victory over Coventry in their first home game of the season, and departed in November after a run of seven straight losses.

Sweden Under-21 coach Poya Asbaghi took over but failed to win any of his first 11 league matches at the helm, leaving relegation looking inevitable before finally ending his wait with a home success against QPR.

They actually won three times in February but that was as good as it got.

Still, they retained some hope up until Easter Monday's limp 2-0 home defeat by fellow strugglers Peterborough in a game where they had more shots and more possession but failed to score against a team who had failed to keep a clean sheet away from home all season.

They join Derby in being relegated to the third tier.

Barnsley have been relegated from the Championship after defeat at Huddersfield.

The Tykes are bottom of the table with three games remaining, 11 points adrift of 20th place Reading.

They came into today's game needing to win to keep their very slim survival hopes going until at least tomorrow but fell behind early to Jordan Rhodes' goal.

Harry Toffolo made it 2-0 before the break and that was enough, although Callum Styles did score a late consolation for the beleaguered Tykes.

For Huddersfield, victory confirms their place in the play-offs... at least.

    Callum Styles (90+6 mins)

    That's something at least.

Callum Styles thumps in a late, late consolation goal that will ultimately count for nought.

    Good hit mind.

Town have been excellent and they'll be in the play-offs.

The Town fans have got a lot to be singing and dancing about and it's a Friday night as well!

I think both sets of players would have happily shook hands on the 90th minute but rules are rules.

  12. SUBSTITUTIONpublished at 89 mins

    Huddersfield 2-0 Barnsley

Town take off Duane Holmes and bring on England cap Fraizer Campbell.

(If you're wondering when Campbell played for England it was against the Netherlands in a friendly in 2012 when Stuart Pearce was caretaker manager. Who knows, that might come up in a very obscure pub quiz.)

Jordan Rhodes, who gave Town the lead in this so long ago it feels like yesterday, tries to put the icing on the cake but his volley is straight at Jack Walton in the Tykes goal.

Nice technique from the Scotland international though.

    Newport 1-2 Colchester

    The turnaround might be on!

Colchester are ahead against Newport courtesy of Noah Chilvers as he works onto John Akinde's ball to fire in from inside the box.

That's a massive blow to the Exiles' League Two play-off hopes.

Robert Lord: Us Barnsley fans just have to get used to being a yo-yo club along with Peterborough

Tommy: Ooft. Huddersfield Town fans can point at at least half a dozen points which were lost carelessly this season. Would've made a first automatic promotion in a few decades decidedly more achievable.

Good shout this from Tommy. Town haven't gone up automatically since 1980 but have been promoted through the play-offs FOUR times since then.

    Huddersfield 2-0 Barnsley

The last thing I expect Barnsley or their fans want is a lot of added time at the end of this but I think that Ollie Turton injury means we'll be in for at least five minutes.

Barnsley, as you'd expect, are having more of it now but it's just not going to happen is it?

Fair play to Ollie Turton and the Huddersfield medical staff.

They've patched the former Blackpool man up and he's back out there.

Think he might have had a stitch put in there which... I mean, that's some way for him to remember this match if so.

Colchester have levelled against Newport heading into the final 20 minutes of this solitary League Two fixture this evening.
