They face Ecuador next on Friday (16:00 GMT), while Senegal meet hosts Qatar on the same day (13:00).

It was a match that teased a goal for long periods but both sides lacked ruthlessness.

Netherlands boss Louis van Gaal even risked the fitness of Memphis Depay to bring him on as a second-half substitute in the hope of finding a way through.

The risk paid off as the Netherlands secured a vital three points in a game many believe could decide the winners of Group A.

They now sit joint-top with Ecuador, who beat hosts Qatar 2-0 on Sunday.

At 71 years and 105 days, Netherlands boss Louis van Gaal became the third oldest manager to take charge of a match at the World Cup, after Otto Rehhagel (71y 317d) and Oscar Tabarez (71y 125d).

It was a fairly even game, although Senegal created more chances than the Dutch.

It was about getting the job done, three points, winning the game. It was a tricky first game for Netherlands on paper, facing the African champions. Moment of brilliance from Frenkie de Jong with the pass, Cody Gakpo with the perfectly timed run.

I think Edouard Mendy shouldn't have come, he may not have saved it anyway but it made it easier for Gakpo. Then in added on time, they get another.

Again, I think Mendy should have done better, Davy Klassen with a comfortable finish on his left foot. Three points, the Dutch have started this World Cup in fine form.

'Senegal have been pussycats'

Sarr has shown some really good moments of brilliance. Noppert has not had much to do. Senegal have been more pussycats than lions. They've just lacked a bit of oomph. It's all slow and pedestrian.

Senegal have attempted 360 passes in this game, their highest total in a single match in the World Cup since the start of last season.

It's a shame they have not tested the Dutch keeper enough.

Aliou Cisse has not given up on this. The Senegal coach is animated on the sidelines as he barks instructions for his players. There's enough time for them to carve out at least one more good chance.
