  1. Thank you and goodnight

    FT: USA 1-1 Wales

Well, it's been a great day of football on the second day of the World Cup, with plenty going on off the pitch that will keep us talking for less positive reasons.

In Group B, it was an outstanding start for England, but Wales, the USA and Iran all remain in with a chance of qualification.

Tonight was historic for Wales as they returned to the grand stage of the World Cup for the first time since 1958 and after a poor first half, they produced an excellent display to rescue a precious point against the Americans.

I'll leave you with a link to Dafydd Pritchard's match report from Doha which you can read here, and the highlights, below.

Thanks for following along with us, we will see you again for Wales action on Friday morning against Iran.

The World Cup is back first thing tomorrow with coverage of Argentina v Saudi Arabia.

    Good night, nos da.

  2. Post update

    FT: USA 1-1 Wales

    Jess Fishlock

    Wales' most-capped footballer

I think USA will feel more upset that it was a draw than Wales.

I'm unsure if they will feel like it was a loss because they were under the cosh for a bit and Wales really kind of took the game to them.

But I think they will be upset that after the first half they weren't able to come out in the second half and maintain control of the match and they will be asking themselves why and how to make that better moving forward.

  3. Bale had 'no doubts' about historic penalty

    FT: USA 1-1 Wales

Gareth Bale said he had "no doubts" about taking the penalty which brought Wales' first World Cup goal since 1958 in their 1-1 draw with the USA.

Timothy Weah's calm finish looked set to give the US victory until Bale was fouled by Walker Zimmerman and stepped up to score the 82nd-minute penalty.

Captain Bale told ITV: "Yeah, [it was] always [going to be] me. No doubts in my head. I feel like I have to step up and I'm happy to do so."

Wales play Iran next up on Friday.

Boss Rob Page said "once against it's all about Bale" after the Los Angeles FC forward's 41st international goal.

When asked if Bale was always going to take the penalty, he told ITV: "A million percent. He's never let us down."

  4. Post update

    FT: USA 1-1 Wales

    Nathan Blake

Former Wales striker on BBC Radio Wales

What I loved about today is that Rob Page was able to make the change, he realised we are being outplayed here, we need to make a change, 45 minutes, bang it was done.

I don't think we can afford to play without Kieffer Moore, he gives us a great platform to build from.

  5. 'We have to be happy with a point' - Davies

    FT: USA 1-1 Wales

Wales defender Ben Davies told ITV:

"We have to be realistically happy with a point after the way we started that game.

"We showed a lot of guts and character to come back into it the way we did.

"It wasn't easy out there, especially the way we started, but it shows the determination of the team that we got back into it.

"We all knew it wasn't us, it wasn't what we showed to get to the World Cup and we knew we deserved to be behind.

"We showed a different side to ourselves and in the end we are probably disappointed with couldn't capitalise a little bit more.

"We had faith in Gareth [Bale], of course, he's our penalty taker and we wouldn't have it any other way.

"England played well today, so we won't underestimate Iran, we know it will be a tough game for sure.

  6. 'I had to step up' - Bale

    FT: USA 1-1 Wales

    Gareth Bale

Wales captain Gareth Bale on his penalty:

“You are going to have a little bit of nerves, for sure, but I am confident in my own ability.

“I am the penalty taker. I have to take the responsibility.

“Sometimes you are going to miss but it’s about stepping up for your country and thankfully it went in today.

“We were in a similar position in Euro 2020, where we went a goal down [ in the opening game against Switzerland] and showed our character to come back.

“One thing I know about this team is that we never give up. We keep fighting and we always find a way.

“It’s a good point in the end and we try to build on that performance.”

More on this story we alluded to earlier in the blog.

An ex-Wales footballer has described being asked to remove her "rainbow wall" bucket hat as she entered a World Cup stadium in Qatar.

The rainbow version of Welsh fan hats shows support for LGBTQ+ people.

Laura McAllister, a gay woman and past FIFA Council candidate, said she was told to remove her hat before the start of Wales' opener against the USA.

The World Cup organisers FIFA have been asked to comment.

    Nathan Blake

Former Wales striker on BBC Radio Wales

You want to go and get three points against Iran, rather than having to get three points against England.

But believe you me, that won't be straightforward.

  9. Fans' nerves as Wales draw in World Cup return

    FT: USA 1-1 Wales

Fans watched with nervousness and excitement as Wales made their return to the biggest stage in world football.

Wales drew 1-1 with the USA in Qatar, in their first World Cup match in 64 years.

Thousands of fans travelled to Qatar, with many more heading to pubs and fan zones back home.

    Jess Fishlock

    Wales' most-capped footballer

I was concerned for the midfield three specifically just based off the first half and the tactics in the first half, how we were so deep and we couldn't get out. They had to do a lot of running.

I think you could see at the end, Harry Wilson goes off, Ethan Ampadu goes off and that's the reason why.

It's not that they can't do it, they can do it, but I don't think people understand the toll that takes on your body.

But they will have four days now to get ready for Iran and they will have to spend all of their time on rest and recovery.

For me Kieffer Moore is a huge attribute, if he didn't have a foul against him he was putting his body in positions always up against a defender.

Tim Ream was nervous in the end. Moore just changed the whole momentum of the second half for me.
