  3. Post update

    Iran 0-1 USA

Iran have been in the World Cup group stages six times - and been eliminated every time.

Only Scotland (eight) have participated in as many World Cups and never reached the knockout phase.

Tunisia could also make it zero from six tomorrow if they don't beat France.

  4. Post update

    Iran 0-1 USA

Iran liked to leave things late in Qatar.

Three of their four goals in the World Cup were scored past the 97th minute.

And two of their four shots tonight came in injury time.

Carlos Queiroz sides have only ever scored once in the first half of a World Cup game with the next 13 goals all coming in the second half.

  5. Post update

    Iran 0-1 USA

The USA have kept consecutive clean sheets at a World Cup for the first time since their very first two games in 1930.

They had only kept two in their previous 28 World Cup games before denying England and Iran.

  6. 'Good performance from young USA team'

    FT: Iran 0-1 USA

    Pablo Zabaleta

Ex- Man City and Argentina defender on BBC Two

USA 100% deserved the win. They were the better team tonight, definitely in the first half. They managed to have a clean sheet, that's all they needed after the first goal and overall it was a solid performance from this young team.

  7. Post update

    Iran 0-1 USA

This was the USA's first win at a World Cup since their group opener against Ghana in 2014.

They failed to qualify for the 2018 tournament.

Sean: Well done the USA. I think they’ve done enough to show that they deserve their place in the last 16.

  9. 'USA deserved the win'

    FT: Iran 0-1 USA

    Danny Murphy

Former England midfielder on BBC Two

Thoroughly deserved, some wonderful USA performances. Musah was terrific again, celebrating his birthday. Tyler Adams was all over the pitch, tireless performance from him and I think the Americans will be very proud of themselves and they will just be hoping that Pulisic is able to recover for the game on Saturday.

    A really really good performance.

  10. 'The guys gave every single ounce'

    FT: Iran 0-1 USA

    BBC One

USA coach Gregg Berhalter speaking to BBC One: "In the first half we showed what we can do, soccer wise. We had a really good first half. Second half we showed what we could do determination wise. The guys grinded, gave every single ounce and we are undefeated going into the next round."

On Christian Pulisic: "No update on his status. But it's a wonderful thing when one of your best players is also one of the most hard working. He's certainly that. I can't say enough positive things about Christian.

"With this new injury time, counting every second it's stressful. I think I have less hair on my head now! But we'll take it and move on and go battle against Holland."

  11. THE FINAL GROUP B TABLE

England win Group B after overcoming Wales tonight. They face Senegal on Sunday evening.

As for the USA, it is a Saturday afternoon meeting with the Netherlands.

    Iran and Wales go home.

  12. Post update

    FT: Iran 0-1 USA

Here's the goal which sent the USA to the Khalifa International Stadium.

Christian Pulisic injured himself in the process of scoring this goal but I'm sure he will feel it was worth the pain.

USA coach Gregg Berhalter says he has no update on Pulisic's knock.

  13. Post update

    Iran 0-1 USA

USA go through with just two goals from their three games - from Timothy Weah and Christian Pulisic.

They conceded just once though - to Gareth Bale.

Iran scored four... but conceded seven.

  14. Post update

    Iran 0-1 USA

We've just seen a replay of that late penalty shout. Mehdi Taremi felt Cameron Carter-Vickers' arm on his shoulder and threw himself down. Was a pretty desperate attempt to win a spot-kick really.

I've rarely seen so many players do the VAR symbol to the referee. At one stage I thought the bench were going to run onto the pitch.

  15. Post update

    Iran 0-1 USA

The United States face the Netherlands in the first World Cup last 16 tie on Saturday at 15:00 GMT.

Group winners England play Senegal on Sunday.

  16. Post update

    Iran 0-1 USA

Iran's players collapse to the ground. They had a go towards the end but they just weren't good enough. Four shots all night.

And that was never a penalty at the end.

  17. FULL-TIME

    Iran 0-1 USA

It's all over. USA are through and Iran are out.

    FT: Iran 0-1 USA
  18. Post update

    Iran 0-1 USA

    Danny Murphy

Former England midfielder on BBC Two

If they give a penalty for that, the game is gone. There's hardly any contact.

  19. NO PENALTY

    Iran 0-1 USA

The referee says no penalty. Mighty relief for the USA.

  20. Video Assistant Referee

    Iran 0-1 USA

Play stops while VAR checks this. Mehdi Taremi thinks he was fouled by Cameron Carter-Vickers as he runs onto a flick-on but I'm not sure.
