    Poland 0-0 Argentina

Lionel Messi's first involvement is a poor one. His corner is headed away at the near post.

Argentina are able to get a second cross in, though, but Nicolas Otamendi can't quite get his headed effort on target.

    Saudi Arabia 0-0 Mexico

So right now both of these teams would be out.

Mexico have their first chance to shoot as Luis Chavez drills wide from 25 yards out.

There is a chance Saudi Arabia could go through with a draw but Mexico just have to win. Win and hope.

  3. Postpublished at 19:02 Greenwich Mean Time 30 November 2022

    Poland 0-0 Argentina

Argentina shift the ball wide for Angel di Maria and he wins his side a corner. Good intent.

    Poland 0-0 Argentina

Not the prettiest of starts. Poland launch a ball to the right wing and it drifts straight out of play. Kicking for touch.

This stadium might end up somewhere in Uruguay after this World Cup is done according to reports, but at the moment you feel like you are in a different part of South America. This place is packed to the rafters with Argentina fans, who have just belted out their anthem at full volume.

Argentina were not great in the first half against Mexico but they still got the win they needed after suffering one of the great World Cup shocks against Saudi Arabia in their opening game.

You wonder if it is written in the stars for Lionel Messi in this tournament the way they huffed and puffed against Mexico before he got the breakthrough goal.

They played much better when Mexico opened up but now they need to win again to be sure of getting through, and it won't be easy. They will have to work hard to break down a Poland side who are top of Group C after two games.

A draw might also get Argentina through depending on what happens in the other match, but that way they would face France in the last 16 and no-one wants to play them next.

    Prediction: 1-2

    Poland v Argentina (19:00 GMT)

Poland are looking to qualify from their World Cup group for the first time since the 1986 tournament under Antoni Piechniczek.

Meanwhile, Poland last remained unbeaten in all three matches in their first round group in 1982, when their third and final game of that group round was a 5-1 win over South American opponents Peru.

Poland would lose to Italy in the semi-finals of that World Cup. Paolo Rossi with the goal.

Only once since 1962 have Argentina failed to qualify from the initial group stage of a World Cup, doing so 13 out of 14 tries.

Their only failure came in 2002, in Japan and South Korea. English fans will likely remember this well as the Three Lions played a big part in Argentina's failure - David Beckham's penalty exorcising the demons of four years earlier, when his red card controbuted to England losing to Argentina in the last 16.

A draw with Sweden in the final group game in 2002 did for La Albiceleste.

They were managed at that tournament by Marcelo Bielsa and had Mauricio Pochettino in their squad.

  17. 'Lewandowski is a nightmare to play against'published at 18:50 Greenwich Mean Time 30 November 2022

    Poland v Argentina (19:00 GMT)

    Pablo Zabaleta
Ex- Man City and Argentina defender on BBC One

I played against him a few times, wonderful player. The good thing about Lewandowski, he never give you a point of reference as a number nine. He's very mobile, he can just go into the box.

Inside the box he is impossible to stop. He attacks the first or second post he is strong in the air, great finisher. It has always been a nightmare to play against him.

The Arsenal defender is not expected to return to the squad for the remainder of the tournament.

  19. 'Lewandowski guarantees goals'published at 18:48 Greenwich Mean Time 30 November 2022

    Poland v Argentina (19:00 GMT)

    Alan Shearer
Former England striker on BBC One

Lewandowski is a proper number nine. We are in an age where we have shifted to a left or a right forward but he is the ultimate number nine. He delivers, he guarantees goals. His numbers are just outrageous. He's not playing in a great Poland team but even his goal scoring for his country is magnificient.

His movement in the box is as good as you're going to get. You don't stay at the top level like he has and constantly score goals without being fit, without having that determination and will to win. Very very good in the air, he can be a great target man.

It would have been so wrong if he hadn't have scored a World Cup goal because of what he has done. What a career.

Robert Lewandowski has been directly involved in both of Poland’s goals at the 2022 World Cup (1 goal, 1 assist), and became their oldest ever World Cup goalscorer against Saudi Arabia last time out (34y 97d).

He is the only Polish player to have attempted more than two shots at this year’s World Cup (7), while no teammate has created more chances than the Barcelona striker at this edition of the tournament (3, level with Piotr Zielinski).
