  2. 'A special night in Everton's history'published at 23:29 British Summer Time 19 May 2022

    Everton

Everton boss Frank Lampard talking to Sky Sports: "What we have just seen, I know its Premier League safety, not champions league, what it means to this club. Anyone on the outside would say we were dead and buried at half-time but the character of this cub dragged us through. The spirit was immense, I am overwhelmed. A huge night for Everton and now we want to take that forward.

"Sometimes as a manager you have to fake it and not show your feelings. There was a small change, Dele came on and was amazing. My point was its the emotions and character, can you energize the crowd?

"Once that goal went in for us something felt special about the night. We have created a special night in Everton's history.

"We needed the fans tonight. They dragged the players but they have been doing it for a long time. The fans have dragged us through, it is extraordinary what they have done. They have suffered this year because they want success.

"Those moments at the end were priceless. I came in three and half months ago and the support I have had from everyone at the club has been huge and that is within Everton. It doesn't get the media, the interesting story is we might get relegated not that Everton has a heart and a soul. Tonight we showed we have a heart and a soul and are staying in the Premier League.

"Now is time to take stock, enjoy for the moment and then make sure we are not here again next year, because there are reasons we are here. We have to find everyway to improve the squad, the club and ourselves.

"Everton fans can know as long as we are at this club myself and the fans will give everything."

  3. 'Relief washes over'published at 23:26 British Summer Time 19 May 2022

    FT: Everton 3-2 Crystal Palace

    Alistair Bruce-Ball
Commentator on BBC Radio 5 Live

It was relief that washes over. Everton football club should never have really been in this situation.

The thought of going down and it could have potentially been the last top-flight game at Goodison Park.

That’s why the emotion of the fans came straight out onto the pitch.

  4. 'Like a broken record'published at 23:25 British Summer Time 19 May 2022

    Chelsea 1-1 Leicester

    Chelsea

Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel, speaking to Sky Sports: "It sounds like a broken record. Unfortunately a familiar feeling where we let opponents escape with draws where we should and deserve to win.

The effort and commitment was huge. We created a lot of chances, didn't allow anything. They had one shot outside the box and again we get punished very early. It was a good response but we struggled with chances. It is like the same record.

"The result was more important than to risk everything to win. Pulisic needs to [score his chance]. These are the kind of chances that decide matches. He knows it, everyone knows it. There is no doubting the quality it is maybe focus, confidence and a bit of luck.

"This season we are constantly in the top three. It feels a bit strange as the top two are so far ahead and you can be trapped thinking this is normal. Of course we want to do better and there is always room for improvement but we were fighting with Tottenham and Arsenal behind us, who can focus and hunt us.

"We showed the commitment that was necessary and I think it is an achievement where the positive things are superior than the negative."

  6. 'Credit to every Evertonian tonight'published at 23:23 British Summer Time 19 May 2022

    FT: Everton 3-2 Crystal Palace

    Everton

More from Everton boss Frank Lampard, speaking to BBC Sport: "You could feel it change in the stadium. My constant fear was security. Don't let them get at us as they have amazing players in Zaha and Eze. They bring on Conor Gallagher and have been a threat all first half. It would have finished the game. But to a man, the defensive effort... and the quality. Dominic Calvert-Lewin and the ball from Demarai [Gray]. It was a real mixture. The togetherness of the whole stadium gave you the feeling that something was coming. Credit to everybody who is an Evertonian tonight.

"For the owner, who I have good contact with, I am so pleased. Anyone who thinks of it from the outside, he has invested a lot of money in the club and there is a real desire for it to stay in the league. We want to do things right going forward and find a better way. The chairman, the CEO, Graeme Sharp, Peter Reid, legends of this club who have been so supportive of me. And the fans. I am a Londoner, seen as a Chelsea boy, a Cockney. People look and go 'can you Everton like that?' and I go: 'yeah, I can and you know what I will give it everything.' I am not perfect, no manager is, but I want to get better and better. Hopefully this gives me the breathing space to go away, see my family more - I miss my family working up here a lot.

"I am a constant optimist and a pessimist. My glass is half full and half empty. It is a dangerous game when you feel like that. My thoughts before the game were all the bad stuff. OK, we go to Arsenal, what can Leeds do, what can Burnley do. On the good side it was whether we could do something incredible tonight. I expected the pitch invasion and the outpouring. This is a people's club and they care deeply about it. There is nowhere else in the Premier League where what happens pre-game happens. It is a huge thing we need to tap into. On a footballing level we need to get better and recruit well. We need to make the culture even better. I will be more forceful about what I want next season. But I don't want to underplay what these players have done. It has not been perfect but what they have done in the run in is special."

  7. 'Dele Alli changed the game'published at 23:20 British Summer Time 19 May 2022

    FT: Everton 3-2 Crystal Palace

    Everton

Everton boss Frank Lampard has been speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live Sport about his side’s performance tonight: "You worry because Palace are a good team, they had no pressure and we had big pressure. The club came together again, the fans were immense. The players, to go out and gave what they gave is something incredible. So much credit for that. It’s not easy when you go 2-0 down. It’s not easy to keep fighting, to keep playing and keep up pressure and go direct."

On Jordan Ayew’s challenge: "It doesn’t matter. We’ve been on the bad end of a few of them and my thoughts at half time was ‘I’m not going to complain about what should have been a red card’ because when you play like we played you cant really complain about anything that’s not the football being played."

On Dele Alli: "He had a massive role. We brought him to the club after a tough time. I’ll be honest sometimes it’s like we have to wait for you, can you train better? Can you fight to make me play you? Absolute credit to him today to suck it up sometimes. He has so much talent there. What he did was come on with quality, with belief, with legs and energy. He changed the game."

On Michael Keane’s goal: "It was crucial because we needed it at that time, we needed belief. Michael is one of the best finishers at the club – people won’t believe me."

On Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s winning goal: "Dominic was immense, he was the other day against Brentford. He hasn’t been fully fit, he has been fighting back from injuries – people want to comment on that and ask questions because he is a top player. He played like a top player. It’s right for him to score that goal because you get what you deserve in football and his work ethic and staying in the game, what he means to this club and I am delighted. Everything you want in a number nine."

  9. 'It became a fight and we could not cope'published at 23:17 British Summer Time 19 May 2022

    FT: Everton 3-2 Crystal Palace

    Crystal Palace

Crystal Palace manager Patrick Vieira, speaking to Sky Sports: "Disappointed as in the first half we played some really good football and controlled the tempo of the game and tactically. We came into the second half with confidence but did not respect the game as much as in the first half. Slowly they started to get into the game. The first goal woke up the crowd and it became difficult for us. The game went into a fight and we could not cope with it.

"We lost control. Tactically and technically we could not keep the ball or move it quickly enough. It became difficult to create chances. We didn't score the the third and they come back. We need to play with more maturity. But that is what we need to do to become a better team.

"In the final game we want to finish on a high. The fans at home have been really good to us and being behind the team. We have to give them what they deserve with a really good performance."

  10. 'Like a broken record'published at 23:12 British Summer Time 19 May 2022

    Chelsea 1-1 Leicester

    Chelsea

Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel, speaking to BBC Sport, said: "It's not been such a difficult week. We had an excellent win at Leeds and a brilliant final which we lost.

"We tried to do well in effort and it's like a broken record as we deserved to win at home and we gave half a chance away and got punished from nothing.

"We didn't allow any chances for Leicester and finished with a point to secure third. It's what we have deserved. All season we have been first, second or third, very consistent. There's another level to Manchester City and Liverpool, a huge task to close to these two teams.

"But we had to defend our position against teams in Tottenham and Arsenal who had played far less games than us and we have taken the position we deserved."

On the chance Christian Pulisic missed, Tuchel said: "It's more than a chance, it's a goal and in a match like this you have to take chances or you may let the opponent take a point. It happens too often, especially at home."

  11. 'Eighth would be a good finish for the season'published at 23:06 British Summer Time 19 May 2022

    Chelsea 1-1 Leicester

    Leicester City

Leicester boss Brendan Rodgers, speaking to Sky Sports: "I was really proud of the players tonight. When you come here you have to defend well and be strong.

"With a bit more belief, especially in the first half we could have created more opportunities but the team Thomas Tuchel put out was a strong side and the players coped well with it.

"To defend well against the bigger sides you need the concentration and I think we managed that."

On Maddison: "It was a brilliant goal. He has been outstanding. He is just on a really high level at the moment. He is the player out there for us that has that belief. But he has added to his game the workrate, the interceptions and the blocks, you saw that tonight."

On the season: "The highest we can finish is eighth and if we do that considering the perception around that Leicester have had a really bad season, it would show how well the players have done over the course of the season.

"For Leicester to be in the top 10 and reach a European final... I have said all along it is perspective.

"We will always fight to compete, that is what we look to do next season."

  12. 'Greatest moment of my football life'published at 23:01 British Summer Time 19 May 2022

    FT: Everton 3-2 Crystal Palace

    Everton

Everton boss Frank Lampard, speaking to BBC Sport: "It is one of the greatest moments of my footballing life and career. I have been very fortunate to have amazing times, especially at Chelsea as a player and a coach. But when you feel the feelings and desperation of what relegation brings to the table, it is different. You need to dig in. You lose games, you fight to do something and then you lose another game. People think you should fly up the table and it is never that way. Coming in here three and a half months ago with my amazing staff, positive people who work so hard, and trying to affect things and getting a reaction from the players, from the fans and feeling unity when it looked split. This club is special and I am proud to be manager of Everton on this night.

"I thought I might cry [at full-time], I thought I might jump out of my body. Nobody can question the celebrations at the end. It is easy to say 'but you haven't won anything'. You know what, come and work at this club for a few months and see the difficulties and what it means to people to stay in this league. See us 2-0 down at half-time, playing poorly, ridiculous second goal and then see the character they showed. See the fans on the pitch in good heart and spirit. They have pulled us over the line, they have been more than a 12th man. But the players also deserve huge credit. An amazing night.

"Dele was brilliant when he came on. He changed the game individually. We had already changed the system but it was to give a little bit of information. It was nothing to do with a system change to change the game, it was always going to be the players, their character and desire to engage the crowd and make something happen. I can't take too much credit. I didn't come up with some new magical tactics. We went direct, but no problem in this position. But we relied on the players."

  13. 'What a rollercoaster football is'published at 22:57 British Summer Time 19 May 2022

    FT: Everton 3-2 Crystal Palace

    Everton

Everton striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin, speaking to Sky Sports: "Unbelievably special. The amount of pressure on us, going 2-0 down. To get to 2-2, I just had the feeling we could nick one. I just had to make sure I was in the right area. An incredible experience.

"What a rollercoaster football is some times. It is why we love the game and why the fans love it. Ideally we wouldn't be in the situation we have been but when it produces moments like that, to go from low to high, I'm not sure I'll sleep tonight.

"The way they have been welcoming us into the ground is unbelievable. Blue flares everywhere. They have made the difference. When we got the first goal they made the difference. Some fans have questioned my commitment to the club but I always give 100% and I hope my goal and how I worked showed that."

Everton defender Michael Keane: "First half was tough. They were getting out and away from our press. They scored two goals that were avoidable. But we spoke at half-time about having belief. Luckily we did that quickly and the crowd got behind us. Richy [Richarlison] scored and I always thought we'd get one more chance.

"We had to keep plugging away as they are a good team are Palace. But getting one, we knew the crowd would get behind us. Luckily we took them. To finish how we have in the last six weeks, the lads deserve credit, as do the fans and manager.

"We've had our mentality questioned and how much we care. It hurt. We care about this club more than anything else in the world. We have let the fans down a lot this season. But you could see out there what it means to all the players. We did not want to take this club down."

  14. 'Everton fans have been incredible'published at 22:54 British Summer Time 19 May 2022

    Everton 3-2 Crystal Palace

    Dion Dublin
Former Premier League striker on Sky Sports

Is there a bigger word than huge? Massive? Everton have grafted, stuck together. They have done what that football club deserves. The fans have been incredible. They put a bit of pressure on the players saying we've done our bit, you do your bit and the players have done that.

  15. 'I have laughed and cried'published at 22:53 British Summer Time 19 May 2022

    Everton 3-2 Crystal Palace

    Everton

Former cruiserweight world champion and Everton fan Tony Bellew: "That is a greater comeback than the Wimbledon one all those years ago when I was sat in the Gladys Street End.

"I was heartbroken at half-time. I have cried, laughed, this is Everton Football Club and I will love them till the day I die.

"I believed in Frank the moment he walked through the door.

"I don't know what I am feeling right now. We are in the Premier League next season."

  16. 'Draw the least the players deserved'published at 22:51 British Summer Time 19 May 2022

    Chelsea 1-1 Leicester

    Leicester City

Leicester boss Brendan Rodgers, speaking to BBC Sport: "We are disappointed with the goal. Apart from that concentration levels were good, we didn't have too many scares. It was the very least the players deserved.

"This is a top level squad, this is a team that was European champions last year. If you give them too much space they will hurt you. We like space high up the pitch but in this game it is a deeper space and from that concentration was good and we didn't give too much away.

"It has been a fantastic season in terms of the games we have played and the experiences the players have picked up. It has been a challenge because of injuries but we have an opportunity to finish eighth. If we can win the game then there is only West Ham in the top six above us and when you think of the criticism we have taken and have taken all through the season on what a disappointing season we have had, I think to finish eighth with everything that has gone against us this season my assessment is the players have done really well."

Everton's Michael Keane talking to BBC Sport: "We always spoke about keeping that belief. We have come back from 2-0 before. If we got that early goal our fans would take us there.

"Our fans were unbelievable and I've never heard anything like it. Pure relief, it has been a hard season but so proud how the club has come together the last six weeks and a platform we need to build on and make sure it never happens again.

"I am buzzing for Dom, it has been a tough period but he has shown his commitment and his quality.

They have been turning up in huge numbers at the training ground and turning up at games two and a half hours before kick-off.

    The fans deserve enormous credit.

The noise inside Goodison makes it a special place. The fans have shown exactly what it means.
