GOAL - Spain 1-0 Costa Ricapublished at 12 mins

    Dani Olmo

It had been coming and there's Spain's 100th goal at a World Cup - and it's a lovely goal too.

Gavi lifts a delightful chipped pass through the middle of the Costa Rica defence, Dani Olmo has the skill, touch, vision and strength to hold off a challenge from Oscar Duarte, spinning his man before lifting a beautiful finish beyond Keylor Navas.

Spain, completely deserved, strike first and do so in style.

    Spain 0-0 Costa Rica

    Rob Green
Former England goalkeeper on BBC Radio 5 Live

One touch football by Spain, going through the middle and the Costa Rica midfield is just too split. Goalkeeper Navas had it covered but you can see Spain just getting their angles, seeing combinations starting, going up through the gears. It's going to be a tough, tough ride for Costa Rica to see this through.

  3. CLOSE!published at 10 mins

    Spain 0-0 Costa Rica

Another chance for Spain and this one falls to Real Madrid striker Marco Asensio. The finish is a bit unconvincing as he prods at the ball and just puts it past the opposite post to the one Dani Olmo fired past a few minutes before. Two early let-offs for Costa Rica.

    Spain 0-0 Costa Rica

Costa Rica have been quite adventurous in their shape. Playing two up front almost and there is just so much space in there for the Spain players.

    Spain 0-0 Costa Rica

    Rob Green
Former England goalkeeper on BBC Radio 5 Live

Huge chance for Dani Olmo. It's an amazing opportunity, on the volley. There is enough pace on the ball, he gets to see it all the way over the defender's shoulder but he grimaces at the thought of missing it because you're expecting him to at least hit the target with that.

    Big, big opportunity.

  8. CLOSE!published at 16:06 Greenwich Mean Time 23 November 2022

    Spain 0-0 Costa Rica

A chance for Spain and it falls to Dani Olmo. He is found with a diagonal ball to the back post over Yeltsin Tejeda's head and Olmo catches it full on the volley. He looks to fire it back across goal but the angles are just a bit off and can only put it just past the post.

That's an early warning to Costa Rica.

  9. Postpublished at 4 mins

    Spain 0-0 Costa Rica

Spain, as you'd expect, dominate the ball early on. Marco Asensio tries to spin and provide a cross for a team-mate on the edge of the Costa Rica box, but is unable to do so and sees the ball cleared.

The next 90 minutes will show what Spain have got. You're looking at a team that on paper is very talented, very, very good individually. But actually, when you get down to the nuts and bolts of it, who is the superstar in there? Pedri? Gavi? Youngsters at Barcelona with real talent, Busquets towards the end of his career, Asensio gets in and out of the Real Madrid team.

But beyond that, there's no real superstars of European powerhouses. A player you would go, yes, we'll put our money on him for the tournament.

The excitement of Japan beating Germany for teams, particularly Costa Rica, who will be thinking, you never know, the madness of this. If you're Spain, you're looking at the game and thinking, we've got a real shot at this. Spain will want those three points today.

It's going to be a tough game for Costa Rica. Everybody is looking at Gavi and Pedri, how are they are going to do but then again, you can't write off Costa Rica. I just want to see a team that wants to go forward.

This is now for Spain to take the advantage, otherwise Japan could inflict them a shock and Germany will probably beat them. I do hope Japan goes through though, because they deserve it and Germany doesn’t, even if they improve.
