I'll be interested to see how many passes Spain have put in this first half because yes, they have been allowed to do it but it has been so comfortable. Popped it around at will, really.

Spain are quality, but looking at their history they generally do well in groups then get stage fright in the knockout rounds.

Spain (black squares) are completing a huge amount of successful passes as shown in the first image compared to their opponents Costa Rica (purple squares) in the second image.

When they get the ball, Costa Rica are often just gifting it back to Spain so they can go on the attack again.

This is the fastest (31 minutes) any side have gone 3-0 up in a World Cup match since Germany v Brazil in 2014 (24 mins).

Still not a single shot on target from Costa Rica.

  5. 'Spain finding space to congregate'published at 45+2 mins

    Spain 3-0 Costa Rica

    Rob Green
Former England goalkeeper on BBC Radio 5 Live

What Spain are doing well is finding areas where three or four of them can congregate. They bide their time to pick that spot but they also always have an out ball; they always have someone in space on the far side so that when they do run out of options, they do have that out ball.

And then when they do get it into that space where there is two, three or four of them, they can do their little passes, do their little interchanges.

Five minutes of injury time at the end of the first half. Costa Rica, who have put in loads of effort chasing fruitlessly after the ball, could very much do with the break.

OK, so as Paul says, Costa Rica are clearly not one of the strongest sides in Qatar but Spain have been an absolute joy to watch.

One-touch passing and moving, always finding another man and then ruthless when they get the chances. Costa Rica can't even get close enough to put a challenge in.

Let’s not get too carried away with Spain. Look who they are playing. Just like England with Iran they’re playing an absolute load of rubbish so of course they’ll look great.

Well, not much. They have just had their first couple of touches in the Spain area after a couple of hoisted crosses found their target.. but they still have not had a single effort at goal.

The Mexican Wave has stopped now, in case you were wondering.

Spain manager Luis Enrique does not stop. His side is 3-0 up, 36 minutes gone and he's directing traffic. He's got a huge technical area down in front of us and he's covering every blade of grass on there.

Spain's next game is going to be against Germany on Sunday and the Germans may well need to get a result from that game to avoid being eliminated after only two matches after their shock 2-1 loss to Japan earlier on.

Just like Gareth Southgate was able to do in England's 6-2 win over Iran on Monday, Luis Enrique is already going to be able to think about resting some legs for the next challenge.

Perhaps a sign the crowd believe this game really is all over, just after the half hour mark - we've just had our first Mexican Wave.

Even the Costa Rica fans got out of their seats... for the first time this evening.

It's still going round the stadium by the way.

Spain clearly took the warning about giant-slaying from the Arg and Ger games, though somehow manage to play with panache here.

That was clinical by Ferran Torres. Spain have been clinical so far. Very good penalty. Just the little hop and more pace in the run than a Jorginho run-up but less of a hop, just to give him that time to say 'which are you going? Down you go, I'll go the other way, thank very much.'

    It's a cruise...

Spain have had just over 87% possession as they score three goals in 30 minutes.

Costa Rica are unable to get near the Spanish players and have been unable to register a shot on target.
