The Japan fans around me can barely believe their eyes. An incredible turnaround from their team, with the added drama of a long VAR delay.
Just a stunned silence from the Spain fans at the moment.

Sean: C'mon Japan!
Purple Tentacle: If Japan do go out this evening it will be a shame. They play the game in a great way and the fans are amazing.

Absolutely incredible stuff. I can't recognise this Japanese team. It's a completely different animal in the second half than from the first.
The intensity to turn over the ball high up the pitch. They've done it brilliantly again.
Costa Rica 0-1 Germany
If Costa Rica are going to score you get the feeling that Keysher Fuller will be the man to do it. Mainly because he seems like the only player in their ranks to ever have a pop.
The 28-year-old gets forward again and sees an effort blocked by David Raum. Yeltsin Tejeda picks up the rebound but sees his shot easily saved by Manuel Neuer in the German goal.
Ao Tanaka
Incredible scenes!
The goal is GIVEN!
I felt sure the ball before the cross had all gone over the line but after a long check by VAR the goal by Ao Tanaka is given.
Japan lead and as things stand are heading into the last 16. They are currently top of the group!
What a turnaround.

What an impact from these substitutes. They've turned the game on its head.
Japan 1-1 Spain
This is a long check by VAR. Did all of the ball go out?
Japan 1-1 Spain
For a second Japan think they are ahead as Ao Tanaka fires in from close range but the ball from Kaoru Mitoma's cross had just gone out of play.
Looks like VAR will check this but it looked to be clearly out to me.
Costa Rica 0-1 Germany
There were a few murmurs from some anxious looking German fans at the Al Bayt Stadium when news of that Japan goal came through.

The intensity from Japan right from the off!
It's worked in this second half. They've pressed and they've really put Spain under pressure. Spain won't be rushed, they want to be calm and cool.
Simon should do better.
Ritsu Doan (49 mins)
Hello!
Instant impact by the substitute Ritsu Doan, but what were Spain doing? They try to play out from the back but Japan press really well and force a mistake, winning posession before Doan thunders a shot into the back of the net and we are all square!
Costa Rica 0-1 Germany
One change apiece at the break. Brandon Aguilera has been replaced by Youstin Salas for Costa Rica.
Lukas Klostermann is on in place of Leon Goretzka for the Germans.
Japan 0-1 Spain
There's changes for both sides at the start of the second half as Dani Carvajal replaces Cesar Azpilicueta for Spain while Takefusa Kubo and Yuto Nagatomo are replaced by Ritsu Doan and Kaoru Mitoma for Japan.
Japan 0-1 Spain
Both Rodri (115) and Pau Torres (109) completed more passes in the first half than Japan did as an entire team (89).
We're back under way.

Costa Rica 0-1 Germany
Here we go again.
HT: Costa Rica 0-1 Germany
The first half xG map shows just how many shots Germany (in purple) have had - 12 to Costa Rica's one.
That black dot, however, is the Keysher Fuller chance for Costa Rica. It shows how Germany cannot rest on their laurels.
The Germans have had just a 7% conversion rate at this World Cup. Hansi Flick will want to see that number increase significantly.

Emeka: Costa Rica should come out and play positive football, I believe if they are positive they will qualify.
HT: Japan 0-1 Spain
The average position map from the first half of Japan v Spain is fascinating - you can see how the Samurai Blue have attempted to match Spain in midfield.
Unfortunately, with 17% possession, there is only so much they can do.

Germany have been completely on top, they might have been two or three nil up by this stage.
It remains tense here because Germany must win. An equaliser for Costa Rica and they would go through. Germany probably need the insulation of a second goal.
