    Costa Rica 0-1 Germany

Since Serge Gnabry made his Germany debut in November 2016, no player has been involved in more goals for the country in all competitions (29 - 21 goals, 8 assists).

He could well get involved a few more times tonight. Definitely looks like a game to fill your boots in.

    Japan 0-1 Spain

Seven minutes to go until half time. Spain are comfortable, but would have liked more than one goal to show for all their possession.

    Costa Rica 0-1 Germany

Decent chance that for Germany. Jamal Musiala weaves his way in from the left but screws his effort wide of the far post.

That's a stinger. Joshua Kimmich warms the hands of Keylor Navas from distance.

Kimmich, who is playing right-back tonight has barely spent a minute in his own half since the game got under way.

Oh that was almost a moment!

Unai Simon is a bit too casual as he tries to pass it out from the back and is closed down quickly by Daizen Maeda. Simon turns back towards goal and panics briefly as the ball runs away from him but then styles it out with a belting pass out wide to Cesar Azpilicueta.

    Never in doubt...

Still the Gnabry goal separating the two teams. That was Gnabry's first ever goal at a World Cup but his 21st for his country. Germany are banging on the door for a second goal and they might need it at some point during the match.

German goalkeeper Manuel Neuer is making his 19th appearance at a World Cup, more than any goalkeeper ever.

    Japan 0-1 Spain

Alvaro Morata has scored nine goals at the World Cup and European Championships since 2016, more than twice as many as any other Spain player in this period.

    Costa Rica 0-1 Germany

Oh hello. That's got to go down as a chance for Costa Rica. A decent ball comes in from the left but former Arsenal forward Joel Campbell, swings and misses it.

  10. Postpublished at 19:31 Greenwich Mean Time 1 December 2022

    Japan 0-1 Spain

A long overdue spell of possession for Japan as they pass it about on the left. Spain, despite little need for it so far in this game, get back into their defensive shape quickly and there's no forward option for Japan before they lose the ball.

This has been a really strong performance by Spain so far.

  11. Postpublished at 19:29 Greenwich Mean Time 1 December 2022

    Costa Rica 0-1 Germany

Costa Rica whose shape resembles something like a 6-3-1 here, leave two men forward for a Germany corner.

They still can't keep hold of the ball mind when it's cleared up field.

    Japan 0-1 Spain

Dani Olmo charges through the middle before attempting to slip in Alvaro Morata but again his pass has a bit too much on it and the keeper gathers.

It isn't long before Spain regain possession and start another attack, however.

    Japan 0-1 Spain

Alejandro Balde does well to keep the ball in play after a bit of a heavy pass by Dani Olmo. Balde cuts it back into the middle of the box but Japan clear.

All very comfortable for Spain at the moment.

    Costa Rica 0-1 Germany

Another German attack is repelled by a wall of red defenders as Jamal Musiala tries to drill an effort towards the bottom corner.

    Costa Rica 0-1 Germany

Pretty much panic stations in the Costa Rica defence every time the ball reaches the feet of Jamal Musiala.

He gets in again down the left but a Costa Rica foot just manages to interrupt another promising Germany move.

Japan are dropping and dropping, there are five players dropping off from the back line. Spain have so much space.

A bit early to do a Mexican Wave, I think - nothing has been decided in Group E yet after all - but all the fans here enjoyed it so much it went around the stadium three times.

Spain have had 85% possession in the opening 20 minutes.

Japan's heat map shows how they have been pushed back, and how they have been unable to get any time on the ball.

  20. CLOSE!published at 19:23 Greenwich Mean Time 1 December 2022

    Japan 0-1 Spain

There it is! Alvaro Morata again as Spain move through the gears with the striker making a great run before hammering a decent shot that is well saved.
