    HT: Japan 0-1 Spain

    Matthew Upson
Former England defender on BBC Radio 5 Live

Japan will have to change their shape a little bit, match up in midfield and force those mistakes on Spain higher up the pitch.

  2. Encouragement for Costa Ricapublished at 19:53 Greenwich Mean Time 1 December 2022

    HT: Costa Rica 0-1 Germany

    Phil McNulty
BBC Sport chief football writer at Al Bayt Stadium

We said Germany were in danger of over-doing it and not finishing Costa Rica off and that almost came back to bite them in the closing moments of the half. Costa Rica came to life and it took a fine save from Germany keeper Manuel Neuer to keep things level.

Costa Rica will suddenly be feeling a lot better about themselves.

Andrew: Jamal Musiala has the footwork and the trickery to bamboozle any defender in world football, he’s just been lacking the end product at this tournament so far. One goal or assist and he could burst into life at this World Cup.

At half time in Group E, Spain and Germany are on course for the last 16.

A single Japanese or Costa Rican goal would change all of that of course.

  5. HALF-TIMEpublished at 19:47 Greenwich Mean Time 1 December 2022

    Costa Rica 0-1 Germany

Looked like a couple of Germany players were showing a touch of nerves as that first-half drew to a close. Hansi Flick's side should really be out of sight mind with some of the chances they've had.

As if to underline Kirrie's point another chance goes begging for Leroy Sane.

A late corner for Spain after a deflected shot. It comes to nothing and the whistle goes for half time.

Kirrie: Germany just aren’t clinical enough. Very different to previous teams

  9. YELLOW CARDpublished at 19:45 Greenwich Mean Time 1 December 2022

    Japan 0-1 Spain

Shogo Taniguchi is late going in for a challenge and sends Gavi tumbling, resulting in a second yellow card for Japan.

Skipper Maya Yoshida is also booked seconds later for a foul on Alvaro Morata, although I'm not sure there was actually contact.

Still, that's three of Japan's back five on yellow cards.

Mark: What a save that was from Neuer!

  11. Postpublished at 19:45 Greenwich Mean Time 1 December 2022

    Costa Rica 0-1 Germany

Huge let off for Germany. David Raum and Antonio Rudiger make a complete mess of a long ball forward allowing Keysher Fuller through on goal.

Costa Rica's goalscorer against Japan can't quite believe his luck but then sees Manuel Neuer superbly tip his effort over the bar.

How big could that save be at the end of the evening?

  12. Postpublished at 19:42 Greenwich Mean Time 1 December 2022

Excellent block by Shogo Taniguchi as he slides in right on the edge of the area to get in the way of Dani Olmo's shot.

    Costa Rica 0-1 Germany

    Karen Bardsley
Former England goalkeeper on BBC Radio 5 Live

Germany have been unbelievably dominant going forward. Costa Rica are pretty much in two banks of five in front of Keylor Navas. Musiala is dominating, he's turning into space and the Costa Rican's just can't keep up.

A quite remarkable stat from our friends at Opta.

Jamal Musiala, with eight, had has more touches in the opposition box so far in this match than Costa Rica have had in the entire World Cup (six).

A last-minute goal from Costa Rica could easily send them through. That's how tight this Group is.

    Costa Rica 0-1 Germany

    Phil McNulty
BBC Sport chief football writer at Al Bayt Stadium

Germany are vastly superior to Costa Rica here but are just in danger of overdoing it with the flicks and tricks around the penalty area. The second goal finishes this off but Germany are making a bit of a meal of it.

  17. Postpublished at 19:41 Greenwich Mean Time 1 December 2022

Oohhh. Serge Gnabry so close to grabbing his and Germany's second.

The Bayern Munich winger turns brilliantly in the box but can't quite wrap enough of his foot round the ball to curl it into the far corner.

  18. Postpublished at 19:41 Greenwich Mean Time 1 December 2022

    Japan 0-1 Spain

What I would say is that there have been a couple of heavy touches in defence by Spain. It has only given Japan the slightest of sniffs as they are able to recover really well, but perhaps something to keep an eye on and a bit of hope for Japan that Spain do have a weakness.

  19. YELLOW CARDpublished at 19:39 Greenwich Mean Time 1 December 2022

    Japan 0-1 Spain

Ko Itakura catches Pedri late and he is booked. He will miss the last-16 game if Japan get through.

  20. 'Germany pushing for a second'published at 19:38 Greenwich Mean Time 1 December 2022

Germany want that second. If Japan got a goal against Spain, then Germany's one goal lead might not be enough.
