'Disappointing from Uruguay'
FT: Portugal 2-0 Uruguay
Matthew Upson
Former England defender on BBC Radio 5 Live
Disappointing showing from Uruguay. There is nothing worse than coming off the pitch in a big game and you don't feel you've given as good as an account of yourself as a team or individually.
They were set up with the back three to start and maybe that affected them. But in terms of a goal threat, it was comfortable for Portugal.
Bruno on target
Portugal 2-0 Uruguay
The shot stats for Bruno Fernandes against Uruguay tonight: one blocked (blue arrow), two shots off target (red arrows) and three on target - with two going in the back of the net to hand Portugal victory.
FULL-TIME
Portugal 2-0 Uruguay
Two goals for Bruno Fernandes (despite Cristiano Ronaldo trying unsuccessfully to claim the first, with the second being a controversial injury-time penalty) and that's two wins for Portugal.
Into the last-16 they go. Uruguay need to beat Ghana in their grudge match later this week if they are to have any chance of joining them in the next phase.
HITS THE WOODWORK - Fernandes (Portugal)
Portugal 2-0 Uruguay
Bruno Fernandes strikes low at goal and only the outside of the left upright denies him a World Cup hat-trick.
Post update
Portugal 2-0 Uruguay
Nearly a hat-trick for Bruno Fernandes, coming round at the back post but seeing his volley saved by the legs of Sergio Rochet.

Trevor Durham: So obviously never a penalty in a million years. The guy’s literally putting his hand down to cushion his fall. What’s the point of VAR if the people using it are morons and make such clear and obvious gaffs?
Lewis Lowe: One of the worst penalty decisions I have ever seen.
Tirzah T: Fernandes scores from the spot, but Ronaldo is claiming it.

Portugal 2-0 Uruguay
Portugal are going to be joining France and Brazil in the last 16 barring something sensational. Three minutes of injury time to go.
'VAR found wanting'
Portugal 2-0 Uruguay
Ian Dennis
BBC Radio 5 Live senior football reporter
VAR has been found wanting on penalties with Portugal twice in this tournament. You wouldn't say that is a clear and obvious error.

A Jorginho-type penalty, a little skip in the air and just waits for Sergio Rochet to fall to the left and just strokes it to the right. A really comfortable hit into the back of the net.
He sees the goalkeeper has gone and there is no pressure on the penalty at that point.

Bruno Fernandes at the double and Portugal are the third side to qualify for the knockout stages. Uruguay are still complaining about that decision.
GOAL - Portugal 2-0 Uruguay
Bruno Fernandes (penalty)
Bruno Fernandes hops, skips and jumps Portugal into the last 16.
So calm, Sergio Rochet dives the wrong way and Fernandes slots it into the bottom corner.

Jimenez looks livid. He was looking at the ball, he doesn't know where it is. He can't believe it.
Post update
No Cristiano Ronaldo on the pitch so it is going to be Bruno Fernandes to take it.
'Harsh'
Portugal 1-0 Uruguay
Ian Dennis
BBC Radio 5 Live senior football reporter
I've got to say that's harsh. He's falling backwards and his left hand has gone down to support the body.

Bruno Fernandes appealed the referee when Gimenez went down and the ball was stopped by his hand behind him.
PENALTY to Portugal
Portugal have a penalty here after a VAR check. Jose Maria Gimenez handled as he fell backwards after being nutmegged by Bruno Fernandes.
Absolutely unintentional, but it has been given.

On that Valverde chance...
It was forced. There was no real build-up, just out of the feet and shoot. But that is just where he's at in his head, he's not had many opportunities and you're resorting to a pot shot through a load of bodies.

Portugal two minutes plus injury time away from the last 16.
