  4. Post update

    FT: Argentina 2-1 Australia

    Gary Lineker

    Ex-England striker on BBC One

It does remind me a bit of 1986 and the side with Maradona. Hard to play against, tough and enduring tough games and seeing their way through.

They were difficult to beat and relied on the magic of Maradona. There are so many similarities.

Maradona was at his peak, Messi is obviously coming to the end of his career. But can they do it?

  5. 'The bond is beautiful'

    FT: Argentina 2-1 Australia

Argentina legend Lionel Messi: "These are amazing feelings, I am really happy to share their beautiful moment with the fans. I know how much effort they have put into coming here and I know the whole of Argentina want to be here. The bonds, the union we have is something beautiful.

"It is unbelievable, the fans' passion, energy and joy. It is unbelievable.

"From the start to the end I am thinking about my children, as they are growing and understand better and enjoy it more.

"They are living it from inside and I see how they suffer and enjoy it. That is spectacular. They are excited as all Argentinians are."

  6. 'Argentina face a tough game against Netherlands'

    FT: Argentina 2-1 Australia

    Pablo Zabaleta

Ex-Man City and Argentina defender on BBC One

Netherlands had a good win today against the USA. They have a good team, nothing special but the same for Argentina. It's going to be another tough game for sure. Quarter-final, another big game for both teams.

Both Netherlands wing backs were really good today.

  7. 'Fans loving Messi'

    FT: Argentina 2-1 Australia

    Pablo Zabaleta

Ex-Man City and Argentina defender on BBC One

Messi producing those moments of magic and you can see the fans just loving it. The fans just behind the goal are still there, just singing and bouncing.

  8. Post update

    FT: Argentina 2-1 Australia

    Rio Ferdinand

Former England defender on BBC One

It was a phenomenal goal from Messi. He takes a step to give himself some time to get the shot off and it's a fantastic finish.

  9. Post update

    FT: Argentina 2-1 Australia

    Pablo Zabaleta

Ex-Man City and Argentina defender on BBC One

It's so much easier having him as number 10.

  10. Post update

    FT: Argentina 2-1 Australia

    Alan Shearer

Former England striker on BBC One

The way Messi works that space. The way he carries the ball when there is much going on around him.

He's got everything. Whenever he gets the ball the whole stadium gets on its feet. It doesn't matter where he is on the pitch, the whole stadium rises.

Argentina's forward #10 Lionel Messi (R) fights for the ball with Australia's defender #05 Fran Karacic (2ndR), Australia's defender #04 Kye Rowles (2ndL) and Australia's midfielder #13 Aaron Mooy during the Qatar 2022 World Cup round of 16 football match between Argentina and Australia at the Ahmad Bin Ali Stadium in Al-Rayyan, west of Doha on December 3, 2022
SMS Message: This game has proven Messi does not need to win the World Cup to be considered the GOAT. Time after time he set his teammates up and they couldn't finish it. Shades of 2014 and Higuain. from Anon

  12. 'Too much reliance on Messi'

    FT; Argentina 2-1 Australia

    Pablo Zabaleta

Ex-Man City and Argentina defender on BBC One

We are still relying on Messi too much. The first half was not good enough and we needed to play a lot quicker. When Messi is on the ball, he is the only one who brings so much danger and a real threat going forward.

  13. Argentina still celebrating

    FT: Argentina 2-1 Australia

    Chris Bevan

BBC Sport at Ahmad Bin Ali Stadium, Qatar

    Argentina

It's half an hour since the final whistle and thousands of Argentina fans are still here, still banging their drums... and still singing.

  14. 'Messi makes everything easier'

    FT: Argentina 2-1 Australia

    Pablo Zabaleta

Ex-Man City and Argentina defender on BBC One

So pleased and so happy for the boys. Messi and everyone. Scaloni as well, well played tonight. Having this number 10 in the team makes everything easier for everyone.

  15. Post update

    FT: Argentina 2-1 Australia

    Alan Shearer

Former England striker on BBC One

We're so lucky to be in this stadium to watch him. What a performance from him, we've talked about his ability, the hunger and desire. The ability to run with the ball which attracts so many players and frees up his team-mates.

  16. 'Messi enjoying himself'

    FT: Argentina 2-1 Australia

    Pablo Zabaleta

Ex-Man City and Argentina defender on BBC One

I think Messi knows that this is his last World Cup and you can really see that he is enjoying it.

Nick: The way Argentina have been they should lose to Netherlands. But who knows. They seem to get a lot of decisions go their way and manage to scrape through. Not a fan.

Think they are average at best. Would like to see them against Japan or South Korea. Think they’d get battered.

  18. Post update

    FT: Argentina 2-1 Australia

    Gary Lineker

    Ex-England striker on BBC One

He does things I've not seen any other player except probably Maradona do.

And to have two of those players, both left footed and both from the same country, both small.

    Different eras, enjoy them both.

  19. 'Australians have to be proud'

    FT: Argentina 2-1 Australia

    Pat Nevin

Former Scotland winger on BBC Radio 5 Live

The game got better and better as it went on. We saw some of the brilliant glimpses of Messi being his magical self. He was the difference, more than anyone else.

Otamendi was magnificent again. You've got to be proud if you're Australian tonight.

They fought and they battled and they frightened the life out of Argentina near the end, particularly in the last 20 seconds but they just couldn't do enough.
