It's safe to say the reaction of the crowd in the Dakar fan zone and those in Wembley were contrasting when Henderson slotted the first goal.

What a goal from England. There are so many positives about that move. England were set brilliantly for the counter attack. Bellingham's body language and presence in this game. He touches it and goes past the Senegalese player.

He has a touch, sees the pass, lays it off and then Kane doesn't disappoint. That finish isn't easy. His composure is brilliant for someone who hasn't scored in this tournament yet and he buries it into the corner.

Jude Bellingham. It's been said many times but absolutely magnificent.

That is all about him. Winning possession deep in his own half, breaking forward and then releasing the ball at exactly the right moment.

Kane did what Kane does best. Emphatic.

England are halfway there. But boy did they have to live on a prayer for parts of that half.

Just as Senegal were getting on top, a goal from Jordan Henderson swung it. Kane's effort means England are in control.

    IT'S TWO!

Well, look who has joined the party!

Harry Kane's first goal of the 2022 World Cup is perfectly timed. He is found in space in the box and makes no mistake with a smashed but controlled finish.

Can we just all agree, though, that Jude Bellingham is some player! It was his tackle, run and pass to release Phil Foden that makes it.

  14. Henderson takes his chancepublished at 19:44 Greenwich Mean Time 4 December 2022

    England 1-0 Senegal

John Stones' attempt in the 21st minute was the second longest wait for the first shot in a match at the 2022 World Cup.

And it had remained England's only attempt until Jordan Henderson's 38th-minute opener.

Senegal have had three shots, with Boulaye Dia's saved attempt their first on target after 31 minutes - though it was Ismaila Sarr's earlier chance that had the greatest xG value of 0.316.

That was much higher than Henderson's (0.143), but crucially for England the Liverpool skipper took his chance to become Three Lion's second-oldest ever World Cup scorer (aged 32 years and 170 days), after Tom Finney against USSR in 1958 (36y 64d).

    England 1-0 Senegal

    Matt Upson

I just get the feeling that England really needed that goal. When the quality does all connect, that's the end result. It's goals or it's efforts on goal.

Stay in the game, work hard. There is naturally a good work ethic in the team and then just wait for those moments in the game where they can capitalise.

How England needed that. It was against the run of play and Senegal coach Aliou Cisse knows it. He is pointing to his temples telling his players to stay calm and keep thinking.

England had been getting sloppy but that was the perfect tonic and already there is more of a spring in their step.

England want to land further punches before the break.

Jude Bellingham is again involved, sending Luke Shaw away down the left, but he holds on to the ball a second too long and his cross is blocked behind.

The resulting corner is dealt with by Senegal.
