    Daizen Maeda

    Here we go!

Celtic's Daizen Maeda gives Japan the lead in the World Cup last-16.

Three Japan players link up for a corner and Ritsu Doan whips in the final cross. It hits a couple of players and lands to the feet of Maeda, six yards out, who makes no mistake.

Andrew: Croatia, with their aging squad, will want to end this game inside the 90 minutes. If this goes to extra-time then Japan become the favourites.

Anon: Japan are such a pleasing team to watch. They all fight for the badge and only a matter of time before their deadly counter attacks which we’ve seen previously.

Ritsu Doan whips in a fine cross for Japan and there's a mix-up at the back but Croatia escape as Josip Juranovic heads behind almost out of the gloves of his keeper.

They did have the player who has the composure this time. The chop from Kamada opens up the angle but he just couldn't wrap his foot around it.

It's just that final piece but it feels like it's getting closer and closer to me. Croatia look leggy.

I don't think the right back Juranovic is having a particularly good game, he is in between positions. They are not able to deal with how the Japanese are playing.

Not the best Luka Modric free-kick and Japan counter quickly but Hidemasa Morita's cross is cut out. They keep going though and Daichi Kamada should score.

The Eintracht Frankfurt man gets the ball in the box and cuts inside a defender but curls high and wide of the far post. Poor shot really.

Japan are a joy to watch - positive, full of running. Best of all, they don't feign injury - they just get on with the game.

Luka Modric has been quiet all throughout the World Cup and this game as well but when he is on the ball something happens.

Scott: Maeda will consistently drop back because it's in his nature as a team player, but also potentially because Japan will think that they're underdogs and need everyone to be putting in tackles in midfield?

Japan left-back Yuto Nagatomo, who is 36 now, totally hacks a cross out of play.

Japan move it sharply but they just have to get these touches right. Moriyasu will be delighted with what his team has done so far.

Croatia's Josko Gvardiol strolls out of defence and then blasts a pass straight at Andrej Kramaric. It was too hard to control.

We are at a stage in the tournament where you have to take every opportunity and exploit every weakness that your opponent is giving you. We have seen two mistakes from the Japanese defence and Croatia have been nowhere near scoring.

Still a long way to go but Croatia could become only the third team to have three 0-0s at a World Cup - along with West Germany in 1978 and Poland in 1982.

Japan are knocking the ball round at the back. The pace has dropped out of this game.

Croatia have a long spell of possession and Japan win the ball and suddenly *bang* they break in numbers. Sadly for them the move comes to nothing.

Much better from Croatia. lt all started with that trademark outside of the boot pass from Modric to Perisic and then it was just cross after cross.

Japan defended it really well. That's what I'm expecting to see more of from Croatia, just step it up from a pressure point of view.

You can see why people are raving about Gvardiol as the defender and why every big club in the world is looking at him.

    Japan 0-0 Croatia

About three or four Croatia crosses in a row cause a major scare, started by Luka Modric's ball to Ivan Perisic - but Andrej Kramaric is double teamed as he tries to turn the ball in at the back post.

Lots of slow patient possession from Croatia while Japan try to hit them on the break has contributed to just the one effort on target so far from either team.
