  1. Pele to watch game from hospitalpublished at 18:50 Greenwich Mean Time 5 December 2022

Brazil v South Korea (19:00 GMT)

There has been a tweet from Pele's twitter account earlier today.

It translated as: "In 1958, I walked the streets thinking about fulfilling the promise I made to my father. I know that today many have made similar promises and are also going in search of their first World Cup. I'll be watching the game in hospital game I'll be rooting for each one of you. Good luck!"

  2. 'Send a prayer to Pele'published at 18:48 Greenwich Mean Time 5 December 2022

Brazil v South Korea (19:00 GMT)

Brazil's assistant coach Cesar Sampaio has asked that everyone "send a prayer" to Pele, who is currently in hospital.

Three-time World Cup winner Pele, 82, has been in hospital since Tuesday and on Saturday reassured fans that he is" strong with a lot of hope".

The Brazil great's statement came after a Sao Paulo newspaper reported that he is receiving end-of-life care.Speaking at the World Cup in Qatar, Sampaio said: "Regardless of your religion we ask you to send a prayer."

Sampaio, who played at Pele's club Santos added: "He is a man who has influenced me not only as an athlete but as a human being. Even being able to talk to him was so difficult because of what he represents."

Pele has received regular treatment since having a tumour removed from his colon in September 2021 and on Thursday said he was at the Hospital Israelita Albert Einstein for a "routine monthly visit".

The hospital said on Saturday he had responded well to treatment for a respiratory infection and was "still undergoing treatment and remains stable". It added Pele was undergoing a "reassessment of chemotherapy treatment".

  3. Jesus and Telles out of World Cuppublished at 18:46 Greenwich Mean Time 5 December 2022

Brazil v South Korea (19:00 GMT)

Gabriel Jesus and Alex Telles have been ruled out of the rest of the World Cup after picking up injuries in Brazil's 1-0 defeat by Cameroon on Friday.

The pair both sustained right knee injuries and underwent MRI scans on Saturday morning.

In a statement, Brazil's football association (CBF) said it was "impossible" for them to participate any further in the tournament in Qatar.

"Players Alex Telles and Gabriel Jesus underwent tests on Saturday morning accompanied by Brazil team doctor Rodrigo Lasmar and a MRI on their right knees confirmed the extent of the injuries and the impossibility of recovery in time to participate in the Fifa World Cup Qatar 2022," the CBF said in a statement.

The Metro is the best place to find new football friends. These four were travelling to the game together but they only met in Qatar.

They have been to all of Brazil's matches so far and intend to be here for the long haul, watching their team in the final hopefully.

I asked the man on the left for his prediction. "1-0 or maybe 2-0 to Brazil?" I said.

"No! 3-0 at least," he replied. The man on the right looked at him in shock. "You are very sure?"

"Oh yes, definitely." That was that.

I started to walk away but the confident predictor shouted: "You are English, yes? France... Oh dear."

A father and son from South Korea were travelling to 974 Stadium on the Metro when I spotted this signed shirt.

"It's all of the players in the squad," said the son proudly.

Then I saw the sign. "Remember Mineirao" it says.

It was the day Brazil lost 7-1 to Germany in the 2014 World Cup on home soil in Belo Horizonte.

These two were there to witness it and the father said "why not for us this time?" I laughed at the audacity but admired it.

As we walked towards the exit, he saw a Brazil fan posing for a photo. He went up to him, showed him the sign and the pair laughed before having a photo together.

If it finishes 7-1 to South Korea, this man can pick my lottery ticket numbers.

  8. Brazil's 'fast little legs' chasing glory in Qatarpublished at 18:36 Greenwich Mean Time 5 December 2022

    Brazil v South Korea

    Marcus Alves
    BBC Sport

Brazil's coaching staff were having a laugh before training when Neymar stopped by them and joked with manager Tite. "This bunch of kids that are coming," he smiled. "It's just nuts. They're going to give you a headache."

The Paris St-Germain superstar was referring to the players Tite had dubbed "perninhas rapidas" (fast little legs).

And he was not wrong - the rise of Raphinha, Vinicius Jr, Gabriel Martinelli, Antony and Rodrygo has totally changed the way the Selecao play and forced the 61-year-old to include all of them in his World Cup squad.

They have helped turn a pragmatic side lacking flair and grace, who couldn't win the fans over, into one to have many in the country - arguably for the first time since 2006 - believing that winning the trophy for the sixth time is not only possible, but highly likely.

The Brazilians have rediscovered their attacking DNA. When in possession, they usually use a 2-3-5 formation that relies heavily on the wingers, not on the overlapping full-backs like in the past. However, that does not mean the defence is left too exposed - Alisson, Thiago Silva and co conceded only 19 goals in the 50 games before Qatar and have often looked impenetrable.

  10. Sutton's predictionspublished at 18:32 Greenwich Mean Time 5 December 2022

    Chris Sutton
Former England striker on BBC Radio 5 Live

Brazil v South Korea (Stadium 974, 19:00 GMT)

South Korea left it very late to get here, but the dramatic way they qualified from Group H means their World Cup has been memorable no matter what happens next.

They will give this a good go, and they showed against Portugal how well organised they are at the back, but I don't think they have got enough at the other end to bother Brazil.

    Sutton's prediction: 2-0

  11. 'Superhero' Son Heung-min inspiring South Korea in Qatarpublished at 18:30 Greenwich Mean Time 5 December 2022

World Cup 2022: Son Heung-min - 'bigger than Beyonce', say South Korea fans

He is revered like a superstar, an icon, a superhero - and behind the mask, Son Heung-min carries the weight of a nation's hopes.

The South Korea captain is a footballer who transcends the sport in his home country.

"He is more famous than Beyonce," one supporter told BBC Sport. Another said: "He makes people proud to be Korean."

When South Korea take on Brazil in the last 16 of the World Cup on Monday (19:00 GMT kick-off), Tottenham forward Son is the man those back home will look to for inspiration.

His picture is on the side of a skyscraper in Doha throughout the World Cup, just a few buildings down from Portugal's Cristiano Ronaldo.

Before each of South Korea's group matches, there were fans bearing Son's name on the back of their shirts everywhere you turned.

"Of course Son is our favourite player. We know he will score," three friends told BBC Sport before their 0-0 draw with Uruguay.

BBC Sport chief football writer at Stadium 974

Neymar was greeted with huge roars as Brazil came out to warm up and the nation's confidence about a World Cup triumph will be lifted simply by his presence.

He will want to use this global stage as confirmation that he deserves to belong in the pantheon of Brazil greats and he gets another chance in this quarter-final against South Korea.

Anyone remember that Swindon Town yellow away kit?

It’s a bit like that at the Stadium this evening.

Seriously though, there is yellow everywhere - most were trying to catch the penalties between Croatia and Japan.

It's not hard to find the Brazilian fans. They are everywhere around 974 Stadium.

I arrived four hours before kick-off and there were already crowds posing in front of a giant model of the World Cup trophy.

These friends spotted me taking pictures and asked where I was from.

"England," I replied. "Ahhhh, England! Not as good as Brazil!"

A good ice-breaker. We had a chat about the game - they are very confident tonight - then had a selfie.

Brazil v South Korea (19:00 GMT)

    Simon Gleave
Head of sports analysis, Nielsen Gracenote

South Korea's progress to this stage was the big shock of the final round of group phase matches as they had just 11% chance of getting through with one game to go according to Gracenote's predictions.

One more goal by Uruguay and it would have been an all-South American last-16 tie.

With Brazil ranked number one in the world by Gracenote and South Korea 23rd this is the biggest mismatch of the eight second round ties.

Brazil are given 77% chance of progress according to Gracenote's predictions and South Korea 23%. If South Korea eliminate Brazil, it will be the biggest shock in World Cup knockout history.
