  1. Goodnight

Morocco 0-0 Spain (3-0 on pens)

That is the end of the live text. Thanks for joining us tonight for the first proper shock of the knockout stages.

Watch the highlights below or read the full match report here.

It's either Portugal or Switzerland in the quarters for Morocco. Follow their last-16 tie here.

  2. 'The problem is Spain's one way of playing'

Morocco 0-0 Spain (3-0 on penalties)

    Guillem Balague

Spanish football journalist on BBC Radio 5 Live

I could see it coming for Spain.

Spain were not in the right dynamic. Morocco played better because they were closer to their game plan.

The problem is that Spain have got one way of playing and that is it.

It works well against bigger teams but against teams like Morocco – fingers crossed we don’t concede in a counter, fingers crossed we don’t concede at a set piece, and fingers crossed something benefits us.

  3. Post update

Morocco 0-0 Spain (3-0 on pens)

Spain have lost three consecutive World Cup penalty shootouts now. That is a joint record with - obviously - England (1990-2006) and Italy (1990-1998).

  4. 'No one thought Morocco would get this far'

Morocco 0-0 Spain (3-0 on pens)

    Pat Nevin

Former Scotland winger on BBC Radio 5 Live

You can see and feel how much it means to this nation.

No one would have thought they could get this far.

Can they do it again? I would be suspecting this might be their last win but so what!

  5. Post update

Morocco 0-0 Spain (3-0 on pens)

Spain's penalty woes started when Pablo Sarabia - brought on specifically for the shootout - missed the first effort.

The Paris St-Germain midfielder had scored his previous five penalties, shown in the graphic below, but missed with a low shot which hit the right-hand post.

  6. 'Miles away'

Morocco 0-0 Spain (3-0 on penalties)

    Guillem Balague

Spanish football journalist on BBC Radio 5 Live

Spain were nowhere close to France, Brazil, England or Argentina.

We don’t have that special player, we don’t have the prowess up front. We don’t have enough collectively.

No one felt that way in Spain. It just didn’t inspire us.

The best thing from the tournament is Twitch and Luis Enrique talking to us.

    We are miles away.

  7. Post update

Morocco 0-0 Spain (3-0 on pens)

Spain only had three shots on target tonight... and two of them were in the shootout. All saved by Yassine Bounou, known as Bono. The 31-year-old, who was born in Canada, has played in Spain for a decade now.

  8. Post update

Morocco 0-0 Spain (3-0 on pens)

Here was the moment that Achraf Hakimi, born and raised in Madrid, knocked Spain out of the World Cup.

  9. Morocco celebrate in style

Morocco 0-0 Spain (3-0 on pens)

Walid Regragui only took over as Morocco manager in August. What an impact!

He is the first African manager to lead a country to the quarter-finals of a World Cup.

  10. 'The tournament needed this'

Morocco 0-0 Spain (3-0 on pens)

    John Bennett

BBC World Service Sport on BBC Radio 5 Live

I think the tournament needed this.

I think it needed one of Saudi Arabia, Morocco or Tunisia to go really far because their fans have created something really special.

It’s fantastic to have them in the last eight.

  11. Morocco throw Bono in the air

Morocco 0-0 Spain (3-0 on penalties)

    Chris Bevan

BBC Sport at Education City, Qatar

Morocco have just finished throwing their hero - goalkeeper Bono - into the air in celebration and the whole team are now saluting their fans behind the goal.

  12. Post update

Morocco 0-0 Spain (3-0 on pens)

Including every World Cup penalty shootout ever, of the players to come on in the second half of extra time and take a penalty, five out of 10 (50%) have scored.

Of those to come on in the final 10 minutes, it is two out of five (40%). The final five minutes and we are down to one out of four (25%).

Two of the players to miss in each of those time slots were tonight - one for each team.

  13. Post update

Morocco 0-0 Spain (3-0 on pens)

    Nesta McGregor

    BBC Sport in Qatar

Achraf Hakimi - ice in his veins. He's booked Morocco a place in the quarter-finals of the World Cup with the deftest of penalties. Little dink down the centre of the goal. He and his team-mates bowing in front of the fans who've been magnificent all night.

They cheered every kick. The noise at full-time as loud as for that winning spot-kick. Africa will have a team in the last eight.

    Hakimi
  14. Post update

Morocco 0-0 Spain (3-0 on pens)

Morocco are into the quarter-finals for the first time ever. Only the fourth African team to reach that stage after Cameroon in 1990, Senegal in 2002 and Ghana in 2010.

None of those three made it further.

It's Portugal or Switzerland for Morocco in the last eight. Live build-up to that last-16 tie has started over here.

  15. Post update

What did I say about U2 puns, Pat?! That goes for you too. Oh no, now I've done one.

  16. 'Beautiful day for Bono'

Morocco 0-0 Spain (3-0 on pens)

    Pat Nevin

Former Scotland winger on BBC Radio 5 Live

    Bono.

What a beautiful day for that guy.

    Morocco win on pens
  17. Post update

FT: Morocco 0-0 Spain (3-0 on penalties)

    Andy Cryer

    BBC Sport in Qatar

Spain's players are just slumped on the centre circle.

What a contrast to the scenes of jubilation coming from the Morrocco fans. A monent of history for them.

The players are dancing, the fans are dancing, the manager is dancing. Wow.

  18. 'Heart, spirit and guts'

Morocco 0-0 Spain (3-0 on pens)

    Pat Nevin

Former Scotland winger on BBC Radio 5 Live

You can’t argue Morocco don’t deserve it.

The hear, the fight, the spirt, and then the guts during that penalty shootout.

    What a historic moment.

    Morocco win on pens
  19. Post update

Morocco 0-0 Spain (3-0 on pens)

I'm glad I told you earlier that U2 puns were banned - because Bono saved all three penalties in that shootout.
