Morocco are a team that like to defend, even though they have Hakim Ziyech, who is technically very gifted. They like to counter attack.

  2. France's 50-50 African recordpublished at 18:58 Greenwich Mean Time 14 December 2022

    France v Morocco (19:00 GMT)

France have lost more World Cup games to African sides than anybody else.

They have won three and lost three of six matches.

The Moroccan anthem is being banged out at deafening levels. Their manager is absolutely going for it.

    France v Morocco (19:00 GMT)

    Alan Shearer
Former England striker on BBC One

France did very well against England. They have got outstanding players and three of their front four have been outstanding in this tournament.

You have to fancy France because they can score goals.

Morocco will try to spoil it, but with the forwards that France have, I just think they'll have too much for them.

  7. 'Morocco an inspiration to other African teams'published at 18:56 Greenwich Mean Time 14 December 2022

    France v Morocco (19:00 GMT)

    Didier Drogba

The African teams have learnt a lot from the last World Cup. This run will have given a lot of confidence to the other teams. They are an inspiration to the other teams.

Who ever thought we'd be hearing Morocco's anthem in a World Cup semi-final. A World Cup. Semi-final. With Morocco.

  9. 'France will cross the ball for Giroud'published at 18:54 Greenwich Mean Time 14 December 2022

    France v Morocco (19:00 GMT)

    Alan Shearer
Former England striker on BBC One

I was at France's first game and it was telling, straight away, that they have to play to Oliver Giroud's strengths and their strengths. They don't have a problem with putting the ball in the box because that is Giroud strength. His biggest strength is balls into the box so he can have a fight with you.

Whether it is on the right or left they will put the ball in the box, and pick up the pieces if they need to. That is how England were punished in the end.

  10. A sea of redpublished at 18:53 Greenwich Mean Time 14 December 2022

    Andy Cryer

Al Bayt when empty is a sea of red seats.

Now, as it is filling up, it remains a sea of red - only this time it's red shirts.

There is a tiny pocket of France fans behind one goal - but you get the feleing this is going to be the biggest atmosphere of the tournament yet.

Andrew: Torn over who I want to see win tonight. Argentina vs France would be a titanic clash we all would have settled for a month ago as a worthy World Cup final. Most love an underdog story and couple that with the fact that Morocco are representing all of Africa. Those who want to see Messi lift the World Cup would also prefer Morocco to be his opponents on Sunday.

  12. Who will win Golden Boot?published at 18:53 Greenwich Mean Time 14 December 2022

    France v Morocco (19:00 GMT)

France forwards Kylian Mbappe and Olivier Giroud are both in the hunt for the Golden Boot.

Argentina's Lionel Messi and Mbappe have five goals each - but Messi's three assists to Mbappe's two is the current tie-breaker.

Giroud, like Argentina's Julian Alvarez, is on four goals and no assists.

Nobody else left in the tournament has more than two goals.

Sofyan Amrabat has been absolutely magnificent.

Morocco are really difficult to beat. They are very good without the ball and one of the reasons for that is him. He gives them so much protection.

He is a huge part of their success so far and he will just keep doing what he's been doing.

He will be patrolling and a trying to read the game and stopping any balls into the front players. He will be reluctant to get forward because he'll want to stop France.

He will try and do it all game, no problem, and he is really good at that and he really enjoys it.

Banners have been slung, red and green balloons strapped to lampposts and thousands of euros worth of fireworks procured, young Marocaine in The Hague are ready to party.

"Whatever the result we will celebrate," Soufian tells me, pulling his balaclava down. "We never made it this far, even if we lose, we celebrate."

His friend Khalid opens his car boot to show me €1500 worth of fireworks.

As we stand on the side of the cycle path in the Schilderswijk (Painter’s district) area of The Hague, cars blare their horns in recognition of the historical moment this community is about to witness.

"The only thing we are worried about is the police."

Khalid has changed into green rimmed glasses and a red Moroccan flag adored scarf for the photo.

"We hired a band, everyone is coming here with positive vibes, but you see the last time, police let us celebrate for thirty minutes then they say, ‘ok now go home’ that’s when the atmosphere changes."

Already police vans are circling, riot police are on standby to ensure, they say, the celebrations don’t get out of control.

  16. 'I am still pinching myself'published at 18:50 Greenwich Mean Time 14 December 2022

    France v Morocco (19:00 GMT)

    BBC World Service

Moroccan journalist Amine El Amri on BBC World Service's World Football in Qatar podcast: "I really have had trouble processing how far we've got, even now. Every hour I am pinching myself to check I awake.

"The defensive line is decimated by injuries. I am most concerned about Nayef Aguerd, his thigh injury seems quite bad, but the rest just want to be there even if they are 50-60% fit.

"I sensed two or three different accents in your package with fans and fans are really proud of Morocco, despite not being Moroccan's themselves. This is on the greatest achievements of this team, beyond the sporting achievement and performance."

Walid Regragui started his professional career in the French lower leagues. He was clever, high football IQ and emotional intelligence.

It was very clear from very early on that he was going to become a manager. The difference he has made, he came after Vahid Halilhodzic, who qualified the team for this World Cup. Vahid is a disciplinarian and that's why Ziyech and Mazraoui stopped playing for them because they could not handle his intensity.

Regragui arrived and has changed completely. He just understands exactly what they need, whether you were born in Morocco or not. He is just perfect to link everyone together. He understands everything. He cleared any tensions between players who were born in Morocco or in France or Italy or elsewhere.

    France v Morocco (19:00 GMT)

Morocco have made plenty of use of their diaspora, with 14 of their 26 players born overseas.

The majority of those hail from Belgium or the Netherlands (four players each), but captain Romain Saiss and winger Sofiane Boufal - and manager Walid Regragui - were born and raised in France.

    Achraf Hakimi is from Madrid.

Morocco’s Football Federation invested heavily in a new national football centre, the Mohammed VI Football Academy, which opened in 2009. Youssef En-Nesryi, Nayef Aguerd and Azzedine Ounahi are amongst the homegrown players who trained there.

  19. 'Griezmann is a team player'published at 18:47 Greenwich Mean Time 14 December 2022

    France v Morocco (19:00 GMT)

    Rio Ferdinand
Former England defender on BBC One

Antoine Griezmann has been phenomenal. He was a doubt going into this tournament in terms of club form and games he's not had much time on the pitch. But both sides of the game, he defends as well as anyone on the pitch and attacking-wise he's so dangerous.

He's a fabulous footballer when he's in full flow, he connects the dots for this team. He connects the midfield and the forward players who are so dangerous. Against England he was phenomenal at breaking up the play.

He's a great deliverer of the ball but he's an absolute team player and you need that if you're going to win the World Cup.

  20. 'Why not reach the final?'published at 18:46 Greenwich Mean Time 14 December 2022

    France v Morocco (19:00 GMT)

Manager Walid Regragui has said Morocco are "one of the four best teams in the world now", as they aim to create more history and reach a World Cup final.

"Why not reach the final of the World Cup? We will show great desire and try to pull off an upset," said Regragui.

"We've come to this competition to change mindsets within our continent."

Morocco have already beaten Belgium, Spain and Portugal on their way to the last four in Qatar.

"Before every match people thought we would get knocked out, but we're still here," added Regragui, who only took charge of the side in August. "We're getting closer to our dreams and we'll fight to get there.

"If we say the semi-final is enough, I don't agree. We aren't satisfied with the semi-final and being the first African team to do that. We want to go further.

"You might think that's crazy, but a bit of craziness is good.

"We're hungry. I don't know if it will be enough, but we want Africa to be on top of the world. I know we're not favourites but we're confident."
