  3. Ten Hag wants to bring McClaren back to Man Utdpublished at 14:41 British Summer Time 21 April 2022

    Simon Stone
    BBC Sport

New Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag wants former England coach and Sir Alex Ferguson’s old assistant Steve McClaren to work with him at Old Trafford.

However, BBC Sport has been told reports McClaren has already been appointed are premature and that nothing is imminent.

McClaren worked with Ten Hag at FC Twente and it is understood the new United boss feels he can provide invaluable insight into both the workings of United and English football in general.

Although it is anticipated Ten Hag will have a small personal coaching team with him, United feel they need to assess with Ten Hag what support staff he needs. They also wish to assess the resources already in place and identify the gaps needed to be filled.

However, if Ten Hag doesn’t get his way, it will not be viewed as a positive sign given the situation the 52-year-old is inheriting at Old Trafford.

For his style of football, he needs players with a commitment to high intensity and discipline. Certain United players just won't offer that, e.g. Pogba, Martial, Rashford, Shaw and others.

The main thing Erik ten Hag needs is the patience of the fans and board. Man Utd need to relinquish their perceived right to be challenging year in, year out, and sacking when the inevitable happens. Give the guy two/three seasons of building. It'll be painful at first but there are no quick fixes here.

Watford have just confirmed they have welcomed William Troost-Ekong back to full training after a slight hamstring strain. The Nigeria defender last played for the Hornets in the 1-0 defeat at Tottenham on 1 January, before playing in the Africa Cup of Nations.

Cucho Hernandez (hamstring) remains sidelined but Samuel Kalu (ankle) and Francisco Sierralta (calf), who missed last Saturday's 2-1 home defeat to Brentford with minor injuries, will both train on Thursday.

  15. What can Man Utd expect from Ten Hag?published at 13:38 British Summer Time 21 April 2022

Erik ten Hag was never really one of those people who made it clear he had massive ambitions to be one of the world's top coaches. He is a very humble man and a modest coach.

That has a lot to do with his background. He comes from the east of the Netherlands where there's a very down-to-earth mentality and where people speak with a very strong accent. They are a bit less flash there and they look up to those from Amsterdam, Rotterdam and The Hague, the places where the big offices, industry and the country's parliament are.

But despite that background - and he does have a strong accent - Ten Hag's situation is different. Financially there is no motivation and no need to go for the big jobs at any stage in his career because he comes from a very rich family, and his father and brothers are multi-millionaires. They own a real estate company and other financial firms.

His father wanted him to go into that company but from a young age Erik was such a brilliant footballer - he was a star for FC Twente as a defender - that he made it clear he had no interest in pursuing that line of work.

However, that family wealth means he doesn't need the big jobs. He knows he doesn't need football to survive so he can follow his own principles, where other managers might compromise to stay in their jobs.

While I think a strong Man Utd side is a must have to make the league more open, I can't help but think we have seen similar hypes and inflated expectations (from most Man Utd fans) after every appointment since Sir Alex. I think there are far bigger issues with the club than just fixing the managerial role.

  17. Lampard hopes Leicester draw is 'a big starting point' for Allipublished at 13:31 British Summer Time 21 April 2022

    Everton 1-1 Leicester City

    Everton

On-loan Manchester United midfielder Donny van de Beek was an unused substitute for Everton against Leicester on Wednesday.

But fellow January signing Dele Alli came off the bench after 58 minutes to help turn the game Everton's way and the former England midfielder played a part in Richarlison's stoppage-time equaliser.

Alli is yet to start a game for the Toffees but manager Frank Lampard said the 26-year-old had been "absolutely spot on" in training over the last two weeks.

"It's not easy to demand from players that are not playing so much to come in and show your manager you deserve a chance but he's done that," said Lampard.

"I was really pleased with [the part he played in the goal] and hopefully that can be a big starting point for him.

"I don't think the story was ever going to be simple with Dele. We all know the situation when it comes to how the last two or three seasons have looked and that high, high level of player that he reached for a big period of time at Tottenham.

"So I don't think it was a case of things being simple and sometimes you have to work and fight through things, and we're in that process with him."
