Brian B: A new manager for Man Utd means nothing if they don’t clear out the head hanging individuals in that dressing room. So many with so little heart.

  2. 'He's very much a coach in the Guardiola mould'published at 13:12 British Summer Time 21 April 2022

    BBC Radio 5 Live

More now from journalist and author Simon Kuper on Erik ten Hag's style of football: "He really got his break by going to Bayern Munich as Pep Guardiola's assistant so he's very much a coach in the Guardiola mould.

"What Erik ten Hag has done is kind of updated it into a hyper-fast, very aggressive press. When playing against Ajax, if the opposition defence had the ball they would be stormed by four or five Ajax strikers at once.

"Ajax would keep winning the ball near the opposition penalty area, breaking very fast. It's a thrilling game to watch, very effective, but you need extremely fit, disciplined players.

"The question is whether that works at Manchester United."

I feel this is a very positive start to arresting a severe decline. I am looking forward to seeing Ten Hag work with our younger players, providing them with some game time and instilling a playing style that aligns with the culture of this club. Getting rid of a lot of rubbish in the squad will help to facilitate this. He will be given backing and time by the Old Trafford faithful in this endeavour. We shall potentially also finally get to see Donny van de Beek get a chance too!

  6. 'Ten Hag has modernised Dutch football'published at 12:58 British Summer Time 21 April 2022

    BBC Radio 5 Live

Journalist Simon Kuper, who has written a book on Ajax, was on Radio 5 Live speaking about Manchester United's appointment of Erik ten Hag.

"He's a very good manager," he said. "He's the kind of guy who only gets big jobs like this because he actually knows an enormous amount about football because he's not a charismatic, famous ex-footballer.

"He has a strong eastern Dutch provincial accent. He wasn't a very good footballer, he played professionally for about a decade as a full-back. He's the kind of guy that everybody walks past and nobody pays any attention to.

"And so it turned out, over the years, that he was a very astute manager who has modernised Dutch 'total football', as you can call it - the very fast, high pressing, overlapping style the Dutch invented in the 70's."

  8. 'Ten Hag is viewed as being a proven winner'published at 12:51 British Summer Time 21 April 2022

    Simon Stone
    BBC Sport

Erik ten Hag was the unanimous choice of senior figures at Old Trafford after what is being said was a rigorous recruitment process, led by football director John Murtough and technical director Darren Fletcher, with new chief executive Richard Arnold engaged for the final stages.

The belief at United is that Ten Hag was the candidate most closely aligned to the club's identity and strategy.

Ten Hag is viewed as being a proven winner who likes to play an attractive, attacking style of football, with a commitment to youth.

It is felt he improves players and develops teams, and within the negotiation process he set out his long-term vision to build a successful team.

For the first time in years, Man Utd have been ahead of the curve in appointing an upcoming manager. Louis van Gaal and Jose Mourinho were past their best, David Moyes and Ole Gunnar Solskaer were never right for the club. It's a very good appointment, but it will take a long time to get the club back on track.

  10. Ten Hag's Ajax recordpublished at 12:45 British Summer Time 21 April 2022

Erik ten Hag took over as Ajax head coach in December 2017 and led them to the league and cup double in 2018-19 and 2020-21.

They reached the semi-finals of the 2018-19 Champions League and were within a minute of making the final, only to be denied by a remarkable Tottenham comeback.

Academy graduates Matthijs de Ligt (Juventus), Frenkie De Jong (Barcelona) then secured big moves abroad while Donny van de Beek joined Manchester United but was used sparingly at Old Trafford before going out on loan to Everton.

Ajax are currently top of the Dutch Eredivisie - four points clear of PSV Eindhoven - with five matches left, although they lost 2-1 to their rivals in the Dutch Cup final last Sunday.

Mike: Ajax have had a tried and tested structure since the 60's. Ten Hag didn't change or enhance anything. Every once in a while a crop of youngsters break through. It happened during his reign also. I wish him well, but seriously doubt his credentials.

  14. For now, what matters is the final games of the season - Van der Sarpublished at 12:26 British Summer Time 21 April 2022

Former Manchester United goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar is now chief executive at Ajax, the club Erik ten Hag is leaving to take over as United's new manager.

In a statement on the Ajax website,, external Van der Sar said: "Four-and-a-half years is a good amount of time, but we would have liked to have kept Erik at Ajax for longer. He is going to make the step to one of the biggest clubs in the world, in a fantastic league.

"We owe Erik a lot of thanks for what he has achieved with Ajax so far, but we are not done yet. At the end of the season, I will look back more extensively on his departure. For now, what matters is the final games of the season in which we all want to bring home the league title."

Ajax are currently four points clear of PSV Eindhoven at the top of the Dutch league, with both sides having five games left.

Ten Hag, who left FC Utrecht to take charge at Ajax in December 2017, added: "I'm happy that it has been finalised and that it has been officially announced. That clarity is important. But I only have one interest now and that's these last five games. I want to finish my time here on a positive note, by winning the league. By doing so, we'll qualify directly for the Champions League. Ajax belongs there."

Ten Hag is the logical choice. He will take United back to basics and ensure hard work is the foundation to taking United back to the top. The recent years that have seen player power and egos get in the way are hopefully on the way out.

  18. The challenges facing Man Utd's new bosspublished at 12:06 British Summer Time 21 April 2022

    Simon Stone
    BBC Sport

Since the retirement of Sir Alex Ferguson in 2013, there have been fleeting moments when it seemed Manchester United was moving in a forward direction.

But, right here, right now, they are further away from challenging for major honours than they have been since Ferguson first arrived at the club in the mid 1980s.

In a sense, Erik ten Hag is in a good position. After what has gone before, under David Moyes, Louis van Gaal, Jose Mourinho and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, there is a sense that structural issues are the real problem at Old Trafford and until they are sorted, any manager will find the job tough.

But this is also the 52-year-old's chance to prove he is capable of transitioning from highly rated coach of a famous club in a less competitive league, to one at the highest level of the game. Clearly though, there are a number of challenges for Ten Hag to overcome.

Click here to see exactly what they are.

The usual online fans that have never watched an Ajax game will get excited, but if we take emotion out of it for a second, is this the perfect recipe for a flop? Limited experience, zero charisma and a woeful squad.
