We're not getting the best view of it, but the opening ceremony is currently taking place at Old Trafford. The fireworks and flames have made it very smoky out there. I don't know what it means but it's evocative.

And it's not stopped the crowd lapping it up.

England have won all 7 matches against Austria, scoring 22 goals and conceding just one. However, last November's 1-0 win for England was the first time the Lionesses had failed to score at least 3 times in a match against Austria.

I'm pumped and buzzing to watch England play the opening game of the Euros against Austria at Old Trafford on Wednesday.

There has been so much talk and hype around the tournament and I'm so happy it's finally here and fans get to watch some of Europe's best players and teams performing.

England have a very good chance of winning it, especially on home soil. I just think the team are ready, the younger players are fearless.

It's their first major tournament. Lauren Hemp is only 21 and captain Leah Williamson, 25, is still young. It's their time to shine and show how good they are.

There's no better feeling than doing that and it's even better in a home tournament. It's super special when all your family and friends are there.

It gives me goosebumps thinking about when I played in the last home Euros in 2005 - you just don't think it's going to come around again.

    On Sarina Wiegman

I spoke to Netherlands players prior to her taking over as England boss and they said she's approachable, she knows people's characters. It takes a special manager to do that.

When it comes to making big decisions, she'll do it. That's why she was brought in. Previous managers haven't done that.

Whisper it quietly, but England couldn't be in better shape heading into the Women's European Championship.

The Lionesses have never won a major international tournament, but they go into this one on the back of a 13-match unbeaten run under Sarina Wiegman.

And in the Dutchwoman, who masterminded the Netherlands' triumph on home soil at Euro 2017, they have a manager who has already shown she can deliver success in the most challenging of environments.

Here, BBC Sport speaks to some of the players and coaches she has worked with over the years to get an insight into the woman who has put a spring in the step of the England team.

Barcelona manager Xavi has shared a photo of himself with Alexia Putellas and wished her "a lot of strength" following the news that the hugely influential midfielder will miss the tournament with an anterior cruciate ligament injury sustained in training.

"Here I am with the best player in the world," the former Spain international wrote on Instagram. "She will prove to us all that she is a champion. You will come back stronger."

  20. Putellas absent after cruel blowpublished at 19:41 British Summer Time 6 July 2022

    Media caption,

Ahead of the Champions League Final this weekend, Putellas tells her story.

One star name who will not be at the Euros is Spain's Alex Putellas, who has lit up the women's game in recent seasons.

Back in January, the Barcelona midfielder was named the Best Fifa Women's Player of the Year, meaning she currently holds both of the highest individual awards in world football, having won the Ballon d'Or in November.

She is the face of Spanish women's football and was tipped by many to be one of the leading stars at this summer's Euros.

However, her country and the tournament will be without her after she suffered an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury on the eve of the event.

The Spanish football federation (RFEF) said Putellas had sprained her knee in training on Tuesday.

Further medical tests showed the 28-year-old had ruptured her ACL.

Spain begin their Euros campaign against Finland on Friday.
