The second leg will take play the following Monday, 23 May.

  2. 'Christmas has come early for Inverness' - Campbellpublished at 22:49 British Summer Time 13 May 2022

FT: Arbroath 0-0 Inverness CT (0-0 agg AET, Inverness wins on pens)

Arbroath manager Dick Campbell speaks to BBC Scotland: "Anybody who knows anything about football knows we were way, way in front. But I've seen it happen in the play-offs.

"I just got hit with all these statistics. We had 600 passes, they had 300-odd. It does nothing for me, we're not ones to feel sorry for ourselves.

"The whole season has been a fairytale. It'll be memorable. We were close to immortality. We've got to repeat that next year.

"Christmas has come early for Inverness tonight, there's no doubt about that. I wish them all the best. Somebody's got to win, somebody's got to lose and we didn't deserve to lose.

"I've been in the game too long to start making excuses. In an hour and twenty minutes we didn't make chances.

"Bobby [Linn] is a legend at the club. He's a lovely guy but the manager's graveyard is full of lovely guys.

"I don't feel sorry for anybody. We missed a penalty kick and they never. He'll wipe himself down and come back next season. He's not to blame for that."

  3. 'Everything went against us' - Welshpublished at 22:44 British Summer Time 13 May 2022

FT: Arbroath 0-0 Inverness CT (0-0 agg AET, Inverness wins on pens)

Inverness captain Sean Welsh also spoke to BBC Scotland: "An absolute battle. You can see the spirit that the lads had to put into that. We had to give everything we had in the tank. What a feeling in the end.

"I'm not surprised. We've shown character all season, every time we've gone behind. We dug in deep.

"We were just trying to get to penalties in the end. We're probably happy to go to penalties and back our keeper and ourselves to get the job done.

"I think everything went against us tonight. That just helped us show the spirit in the group.

"We'll rest now, we don't have many players left! We'll do what we can next week and adrenaline will get us through those games.

Everything conspired against them tonight. Full marks to them, the leadership from Kirk Broadfoot, defending their penalty box. They showed great nerve in penalties.

Inverness manager Billy Dodds speaks to BBC Scotland: "You think about all the emotional things in your life. It wasn't about us getting through tonight, it was the circumstances we did it in.

"I have my feelings, I'm just keeping quiet because I'll get myself into trouble.

"My boys gave me absolutely everything. We had to work our socks off. I said this will be your night, if we get them to penalties we will win this.

"I sat down on the bench and I was calm all penalty shoot out. I was the only one sitting down, I just let it happen.

"That's the best bunch of boys I've worked with. I would have been proud of everyone of them if we lost the penalty shoot out tonight."

Man of the match Kirk Broadfoot speaks to BBC Scotland: "I just hit the target and hoped it went in. I had a funny feeling he would dive to that side because he never stayed in the middle once.

"We practiced penalties all weeks. Credit to Arbroath, they made it so hard for us and they've had some season.

"The conditions never helped both teams. The wind was terrible. To go to nine men, it's credit to the players to battle.

It'll take time for Arbroath to get over this one. Tonight, there was so many things that went in their favour. It'll be a tough one. But don't take anything away from Inverness, that took guts and determination to get to penalties.

The fairy tale is over. The Arbroath dream is dead.

The cruellest of blows to end a campaign that has been so full of highs for Dick Campbell and his men.

After 210 minutes of football, and two Inverness red cards, the sides cannot be split.

Mark Ridgers saves from the spot from the man who embodies the Arbroath story - Bobby Linn.

It's a real shame that the referee will be the talking point tonight. Yes, the football hasn't been pretty but you've got two sets of players giving their absolute all. It's a bizarre decision.
