For Karen and Stewart Robertson, who live in Fife, Seville has already created emotional memories.

The mother and son from Glenrothes are following in the footsteps of their much-missed husband and dad, Brian Robertson.

Rangers fan Brian went to Spain in 1972 to see his favourites lift the European Cup Winners' Cup.

He died in 2020 and Stewart and Karen have made the trip for him. They even brought his Rangers scarf.

They are hoping to witness another glittering Spanish night in their team's history, 50 years on from the night that belonged to the Barcelona Bears. "I lost my dad during Covid and he was a massive Rangers supporter," Stewart says. "Rangers has been a big thing in our lives."

Referee Slavko Vincic will officiate the final as he completes a special hat-trick of his own.

The Slovenian was fourth official at last year's final between Villarreal and Manchester United in Gdansk - and an additional assistant referee for the 2017 final between Ajax and Manchester United in Stockholm.

"I want to be the right referee for this match," said the 42-year-old, who owns a company in the metal industry.

"I'm full of emotion, pride and happiness. And I'm also aware of the great sense of responsibility.

"Now, it's important to keep myself on solid ground, focus and prepare mentally and physically together with my team, so that we're totally ready for the challenge of this final."

  6. Fans should be 'ambassadors' - Ibrox icon Greigpublished at 13:52 British Summer Time 18 May 2022

    Eintracht Frankfurt v Rangers (20:00)

Former Rangers captain John Greig, who led the team to victory in the 1972 European Cup Winners' Cup final in Barcelona, wrote an open letter to fans, external before the final, urging them to be "ambassadors" and show the "absolute best" of the club.

The former full-back added: "To see Rangers in a European final is something many of us thought would not be possible again and I've been so taken by the incredible lengths you are going to in order to reach Seville to back the team out there.

"It is vital that we all act responsibly and remember the values this institution stands for."

Seville Police said they were prepared for large numbers of supporters in the city for the match, with about 5,000 officers on duty.

Many bars in Seville will be closed on Wednesday, but fans will be able to watch the game on big screens in fan zones around the city.

It has been a mixed bag of a season for the team facing Rangers in the sweltering Spanish heat.

A pretty mediocre domestic campaign ended with a 2-2 draw away to Mainz, leaving them 11th in the Bundesliga table.

In truth, their run away from Europe has been poor for some time, with Frankfurt's last league win coming in March against Bochum.

An eight-game domestic winless run has been punctured with some truly magic moments to offer pangs of hope for the thousands travelling to Seville from central Germany.

Oliver Glasner's team have not lost in Europe all season, while Barcelona and West Ham have both been sent packing in recent rounds.

In attack, Colombia striker Rafael Borre is the man to stop. In the league, he is Frankfurt's leading scorer with a rather modest tally of eight. However, goals against Barcelona and West Ham have been key to his side's progression.

Captain James Tavernier wants Rangers to make history in the Europa League final.

“It means the world to us," the free-scoring right-back says. "I wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t for the great team behind us, the boss directing us.

“It is obviously one step away and we all want to make history and bring that cup back home.

“I know all the boys will give 110% when asked and we will leave everything out on the pitch and hopefully we will make everyone proud.”

Seville has deployed 5,000 police officers to ensure the event passes off safely

Clifford Stott, a professor in crowd psychology at Keele University and an expert in how supporters are policed, tells BBC Scotland he hopes the police do not fail to recognise public safety dangers in Seville.

"It will be interesting in Seville, because you also have ticketless fans going to neighbouring stadiums to watch this fixture, so it is not just the match itself, which will have quite a small proportion of supporters, whereas the other stadiums are probably going to have bigger crowds," he says.

“Often we find it is a failure to do that which is one of main catalysts through which a situation can escalate, particularly when it is combined with what might be called heavy-handed policing.

“In my own experience, the Spanish police are really quite poor on occasions. There has been disorder in Seville recently. There were clashes between West Ham fans who were playing Sevilla in a Europa League match and Eintracht Frankfurt fans who had played neighbouring Real Betis the night before.

"In March, there were problems with Dinamo Zagreb fans. Manchester City fans have had problems there in the past.

"Spanish policing can be quite bad. It can be quite provocative and very heavy handed."

So 100,000 Rangers fans have headed for Spain, but there's a huge number of German fans there too - around 50,000 in fact.

Taufig Khalil is a football correspondent with German radio station ARD and he tells Lunchtime Live he thinks the German club's chances are pretty good tonight.

"From the German point of view, they think they are the slight favourites tonight," he says. "Maybe the Scottish fans will think the same.

"But I think that's the nature of this thing. Frankfurt are a very strong team when it comes to international football this season - not when it comes to the Bundesliga.

"They took it at the end of the season very easy because they couldn't achieve something. They focus all on this match tonight and they have a very, very good goalkeeper - Kevin Trapp, who played with Paris St-Germain, he is the big star of the team."

There are also plenty of Eintracht Frankfurt fans in Seville

Eintracht head coach Oliver Glasner is not worried about his club's fans being out-sung by their Rangers counterparts.

"Our fans are exceptional," he says. "They have gone to great lengths to follow us around Europe. It’s the atmosphere they create. The enthusiasm and passion they bring is one thing, but there are intangible factors that give you goosebumps.

"We’ve got two teams with incredible fans and maybe the best away fans in Europe. I think we’re going to have 150,000 from both sets of fans to support their teams.

"The emotions have only grown in the last few months. I’m so proud of the players and what they’ve produced in the last two months. Both teams fully deserve to be in the final.

"With Rangers, I see a mix of West Ham and Barcelona. The Dutch influence of the head coach in their build-up play but the British mentality. We need a top performance."

Rangers supporters from Northern Ireland are among the estimated 100,000 fans turning Seville blue for the Europa League final.

One of them has travelled to the Spanish city from his job in Venezuela to see his beloved side take on Eintracht Frankfurt.

The only problem is he has no ticket and is still debating whether to spend the "crazy money" needed to get one.

  15. Spain a lucky venue for Eintracht?published at 13:01 British Summer Time 18 May 2022

    Eintracht Frankfurt v Rangers (20:00)

Eintracht Frankfurt head coach Oliver Gasner thinks Spain is a lucky destination for himself and his club.

"It’s our third game in Spain and I'm coming here on holiday next month," he says. "We won the first two, so we come here with a good feeling. But I like it here, I like the tapas and the stadium! The pitch is perfect and everything is perfect for us to play in a big final here.

"Rangers are a team that will constantly and robustly engage you in one-on-one battles and are willing to make the runs at the back. Tavernier is the top goalscorer in the Europa League as a full-back, which shows how high their full-backs are."

Among those lucky enough to have tickets for the game are Zac Smith, 11, his 10-year-old brother Tom and their twin 14-year-old cousins, Jack and Adam - the grandsons of legendary Rangers manager Walter Smith, who died last year.

All four are too young to remember their papa leading the club into their last final in 2008, with Zac predicting a 2-0 win this time around.

"Rangers have made it this far in the tournament playing amazing teams and I think Rangers will beat Frankfurt," he says. "It has been amazing. I've never experienced this with Rangers - it's mind blowing.

"Obviously my papa made it to the final and didn't win it. We're trying to make up for that today."

The boys only found out after school on Friday that they would be going to Seville, with Jack saying his grandfather would have been "having a blast" among the Rangers fans.

  18. Better than Postecoglou and Celtic?published at 12:37 British Summer Time 18 May 2022

    Eintracht Frankfurt v Rangers (20:00)

On whether or not this would be Rangers' greatest achievement, Jonathan Watson adds: “I don’t know about that, but I certainly think it will be up there with 1972 – that was a great achievement as it was a difficult campaign to get to that final.

"But Rangers have played great opposition en-route to this final, so if they do it, it would be some achievement. And Rangers changed managers half way through this season. That must be a difficult thing to do.

"A pal of mine who is a Celtic fan said on Twitter the other day that we’ve got a better manager and a better team - and I think we do."

Thumbs up if you think Rangers and Giovanni van Bronckhorst's achievements have topped Ange Postecoglou's and Celtic this season. Thumbs down if you think Celtic's title and League Cup double tops it.

Two Doors Down and Only An Excuse star Jonathan Watson has been speaking to our very own Chick Young about the final, being a Rangers fan, and his superstitions.

"They’ve got a right good chance and they’re playing well just now, so you never know - I hope so," he says of their chances.

“Every round I thought ‘this is it, it isn’t going any further’, but I’ve watched all of the games and, with each game, you could see the confidence growing.

“I won’t be in Seville and have no plans to go. What I’ll be doing is what I’ve been doing all the way through and will be watching it on my iPad, on the couch, with the dog beside me. Ready for the dog and the cat to hit the roof when Rangers score. I’ll be following my superstition and sticking with that."
