  1. Good nightpublished at 22:53 British Summer Time 1 June 2022

    FT: Scotland 1-3 Ukraine

That's all for tonight folks. Congratulations to Ukraine on a very accomplished performance. Astonishing really, given the horrendous circumstances.

As far as Scotland go, we're back next week for a Nations League meeting with Armenia. A chance for Steve Clarke to experiment or for players to get tonight's disappointment out of their system?

  2. Scotland miss out once morepublished at 22:43 British Summer Time 1 June 2022

    FT: Scotland 1-3 Ukraine

Scotland's long wait for a World Cup place goes on...

Is it too early to say a winter tournament is rubbish anyway? Does an expanded competition in 2026 offer any hope?

Things feel a bit bleak right now.

There were a lot of below par performances tonight, with only Craig Gordon and Callum McGregor coming away with any credit.

  3. On to Cardiff for Ukraine...published at 22:39 British Summer Time 1 June 2022

    FT: Scotland 1-3 Ukraine

Wales v Ukraine should be a cracker on Sunday. The winner will join England, USA and Iran in Group B at the World Cup.

Will Ukraine have the energy to go again?

Wales will be fresh after resting their main men this evening but they will need to be wary after watching Scotland getting taught a bit of a lesson at Hampden.

It will be steep leaning curve for Steve Clarke. It was his biggest test and he's come up short. He needs to go away look at what he could have done to influence the game. The players will do the same. The Nations League gives them the opportunity to get it out their system as quickly as they possibly can.

  5. 'We'll suffer together' - Clarkepublished at 22:34 British Summer Time 1 June 2022

    FT: Scotland 1-3 Ukraine

Scotland boss Steve Clarke tells Sky Sports: "It's a disappointing night. You have to be honest, the best team on the night won.

"I wish Ukraine luck in Cardiff, but you have to wish the Welsh luck as well. First half we didn't play enough, we didn't get the ball down.

"I made the change at half-time and we didn't give ourselves the chance to utilise that.

"John (McGinn) missed a big chance that would've given us half an hour to get back into the game. We chased it well, we tried as hard as we could.

"Ukraine pressed us really well, especially Billy Gilmour and Callum McGregor. It become a little bit frantic. We did have some chances but we didn't take them on the night.

"Now is a night to suffer, we'll suffer together. It's going to take at least 48 hours just to move on. When you lose a game of this magnitude it hurts. We will try build into the Nations League campaign."

Scotland should have been on top of the goalkeeper after the first goal went in. You have to get a result any way you can. I don't need a manager or coach to be shouting at me to tell me 'put it on top of the goalkeeper'. Players need to take responsibility.

  10. 'It's ended this way too many times' - Gordonpublished at 22:18 British Summer Time 1 June 2022

    FT: Scotland 1-3 Ukraine

Scotland keeper Craig Gordon tells Sky Sports: "We worked so hard to get here for this one match... It's disappointing.

"We didn't play our best, we can't hide behind that. We don't want to make any excuses. We still created chances but we didn't manage to get back into the game.

"It's hard to take at the moment, there are a lot of disappointed guys in the dressing room. Most of the guys in there are young enough to go again.

"It's ended this way too many times, especially for me personally."

Scotland captain Andy Robertson tells Sky Sports: "We've waited a long time for this. Our performances before have been good but we didn't show up.

"Ukraine settled into the game quicker and that continued. We gave ourselves too much of an uphill battle. We didn't play the way we wanted to and that's disappointing. It's passed us by.

"We've let ourselves down. We have to hurt and we need to reflect. But we have to stick together, we know scrutiny will come our way. All we can say is sorry to the fans."

3-1 isn't even close to being a fair reflection of it. Ukraine had so many chances in this game, they were by far and away the better side and they deserve to go into the final. It's beautiful moment for them and their fans. Scotland were lamentable for too long. It was going on 6-0. Steve Clarke got it wrong. He got his team wrong, he got his formation wrong.

  13. Nations League next for Scotlandpublished at 22:07 British Summer Time 1 June 2022

    FT: Scotland 1-3 Ukraine

While Ukraine move on to Cardiff, Scotland need to lick their wounds and prepare for three Nations League matches.

There's a home game against Armenia next Wednesday, followed by a game with Republic of Ireland in Dublin and then a trip to Armenia.

Buzzing for that? No, I didn't think so, although these games could be important for a place at the next Euros.

From start to finish, Scotland were reactive. The changes came far too late. What message does it send to your strikers on the bench watching your centre-half up top? Scotland were outclassed and Ukraine can be so proud of themselves.

Ukraine midfielder Oleksandr Zinchenko tells Sky Sports: "Every game for us now is like a final. We have one more and we need to win it - we need to take it or this won't mean anything.

"We scored three goals, we could've scored even more. [Sunday] is going to be a massive game for us. We need to show the best performance of our lives."

    Quote Message

We got a lesson in football tonight. I've not seen a Scotland team so outplayed in every department, with so many chances created against them. Craig Gordon did what Craig Gordon does. It could have been an embarrassing night for us, but I really enjoyed watching Ukraine. The shape was totally wrong right from the start. At the back, we were all over the place.

  20. 'No complaints over result'published at 21:48 British Summer Time 1 June 2022

    FT: Scotland 1-3 Ukraine

    Craig Levein
Former Scotland manager on BBC Sportsound

    Quote Message

Nobody could argue that wasn't the correct result. We spoke about Scotland's inadequacies in the first-half, but Ukraine played fantastically well. Craig Gordon made some unbelievable saves to keep Scotland in it. The system did change after that and it looked better, gave us an opportunity. But you're asking a lot to get back in the game from 2-0 down.
