It's going to take some turnaround for Scotland to get back into it. Two players at the back post and Yaremchuk just drifts off. McTominay, if he is a defender in that position, smells the danger. It's been coming, again. We've been exposed once again.

Ryan Christie is on for Scotland, taking over from striker Lyndon Dykes.

Hopefully, that puts an end to all the speculative punts up the park.

    Quote Message

I wrote that system wasn't working after 20 minutes. Scotland were trying to get their wing-backs high so they could be the out-ball for the two midfielders. We never got the ball to them. We've just tried to hit the ball long. We've gone man-for-man at the back. Their movement has destroyed us.

Ukraine, right from the start, looked composed, focused, accurate, sharp - way sharper than Scotland. The back-three isn't working, there's loads of space and confusion. The wing-backs aren't working, they aren't threatening enough. The front-two aren't working. Apart from that, Scotland are having a great night!

  12. 'Big team talk required'published at 20:39 British Summer Time 1 June 2022

    HT: Scotland 0-1 Ukraine

    Scott Mullen
    BBC Scotland at Hampden Park

Scotland need to press the 'break in case of a really, really, really big emergency' button at half-time here.

Make no mistake, Ukraine deserve this. Inexplicably they have been fitter, sharper, tactically better and more clinical than a Scotland team which, being honest, just hasn't clicked. Scotland fans expect their team to do things the hard way, but this is genuinely worrying.

The Scottish back three has been badly exposed repeatedly. At the other end, Georgiy Bushchan has had absolutely nothing to do. In the middle, Oleksandr Zinchenko is running the show.

Steve Clarke has had to do a few big team talks in his three years in the job. This could be his biggest.

Scotland haven't played anywhere near as well as we know they can. To go route one all night to Lyndon Dykes isn't the option.

  15. HALF-TIME Scotland 0-1 Ukrainepublished at 45+1 mins

Ukraine have comprehensively outplayed Scotland and are good value for their lead, which came from a lovey Andriy Yarmolenko finish.

The visitors could have been further ahead since Craig Gordon pulled off one miraculous save to deny Yarmolenko before the deadlock was broken.

A low, fizzing shot from Callum McGregor breaks into the path of John McGinn, who tries to lift the ball beyond a sliding defender near the byeline but Mykola Matvienko is wise to it and blocks his way.

  18. 'Back three not working for Scotland'published at 20:26 British Summer Time 1 June 2022

    Scotland 0-1 Ukraine

    Craig Levein
Former Scotland manager on BBC Sportsound

    Quote Message

It's been coming. That's five opportunities Ukraine have had. The system isn't right, the back three isn't working. The movement of the front three of Ukraine is causing all sorts of problems. They need to put an extra defender in the back-line, go 4-3-3, try and match up. We're too hesitant, we've lost confidence. If we keep going like this, they will score other goals.
