  2. 'That's the beauty of the League Cup' - Neilsonpublished at 17:59 British Summer Time 30 July 2022

    FT: Hearts 2-1 Ross County

Robbie Neilson was also keen to sing the praises of the League Cup, saying how important it can be heading into the Premiership season.

"We need to get up to speed but I thought the second half we were getting there," he added. "We’re coming into the first competitive game of the season and they're always a wee bit slow at times.

"One of the advantages of European football is that you can prepare well in pre-season games but, in my opinion, one of the beauties of the League Cup is that you can get four really competitive games and be at it and be ready for the start of the season.

On Stephen Kingsley's absence he added: "He had a slight hamstring strain that he picked up during the week so we just felt this was too early for him, so we’ll see where he us during the week."

  3. Neilson aware Hearts need to step it uppublished at 17:57 British Summer Time 30 July 2022

    FT: Hearts 2-1 Ross County

Manager Robbie Neilson tells BBC Scotland he could tell Hearts were lacking intensity in their first competitive clash this season.

"I'm delighted to get three points in our first competitive game," he said. "Especially as it was against a team that have had four already.

"In that initial stage of the game I felt our intensity wasn't there and to Ross County's credit I felt they were very, very good at the start of the game.

"We eventually got a foothold in it and started to take a bit of control and in the second half we were a bit more like ourselves."

I worry for St Johnstone in terms of chances created. I wondered if we would see a change of shape this season.

  5. Davidson calls for consistency after red card decisionpublished at 17:52 British Summer Time 30 July 2022

    FT: St Johnstone 1-0 Hibernian

St Johnstone manager Callum Davidson is not happy at all about the red card shown to his captain Murray Davidson, complaining that Hibs defender Marijan Cabraja escaped with a booking for similar late challenge.

"I've probably not calmed down enough yet, so overall emotion, frustrated," he tells BBC Sportsound.

"I think I have to talk about the two decisions - they are either yellows or they are reds. One can't be a red and one a yellow - they are the exact same tackle.

"I thought in the second-half we got a wee bit better, we worked extremely hard but then we went down to 10 men and worked even harder. We basically limited Hibs to very, very few chances and then a similar tackle goes in and he gives [Cabraja] a yellow card. It's either two yellows or two reds, it is as simple as that for me.

"It's how you interpret it, that's my frustration. They're both very similar tackles and I just don't understand the decision. If I watch them back and they're different, I will hold my hands up. Consistency is what I am looking for."

I've got no doubts that Kilmarnock will be absolutely fine. They have got guys who know what it's all about and some young guys with potential.

  7. McInnes 'encouraged' by Kilmarnock displaypublished at 17:42 British Summer Time 30 July 2022

    FT: Kilmarnock 1-1 Dundee United

"There are times when that level of performance will win the game but any 90th-minute equaliser you grab with both hands," says Kilmarnock boss Derek McInnes.

"It was the very least we deserved against a team that finished fourth last season.

"For the vast majority of the first half we were outstanding and it was a real blow when Levitt scored because we had two or three opportunities to clear - and we had a wee hangover at the start of the second half.

"But from 60 minutes on, we were the better team, hands down, knocking on the door, controlling the game.

"Ash Taylor has scored a few important goals for us and he made a great connection. It would have been tough to take nothing from that.

"I'm encouraged by what I saw today."

  8. "I'm taking it" - Josh Campbellpublished at 17:38 British Summer Time 30 July 2022

    FT: St Johnstone 0-1 Hibernian

Hibernian player Josh Campbell tells BBC Sportsound he's claiming the only goal in Perth, even if it went in off his team-mate. He says: "I've been told it's mine by Rocky [Bushiri]! I headed it just in that direction, I didn't really see it, I fell down but if he says it is mine, I'm taking it!

"It shows how deep we are willing to go. When you play against 10-men, it's actually sometimes harder and I think it was harder today, St Johnstone just sat in, so to score late on, it's brilliant for us.

"The fans were brilliant all day. They came in their numbers and it was good to give them something to sing about and shout about."

    * Looking at it again, it might actually be a St Johnstone player who got the last touch - Cammy MacPherson...

  9. VAR is a comingpublished at 17:28 British Summer Time 30 July 2022

BBC Sportsound chums Darryl Broadfoot and Michael Stewart are squabbling about the merits of bringing in VAR mid-season or even earlier.

Allan Preston chips in with "We've waited over a 100 years for something like this, could we not have waited another six months?"

The system could be in place by October. If you get the argument for bringing it in as early as possible give us a thumbs up. If you think it would be fairer to wait until next summer, use a thumbs down.

  10. Postpublished at 17:22 British Summer Time 30 July 2022

    FT: St Johnstone 0-1 Hibernian

Hibernian manager Lee Johnson is happy to win a "really tough game" at McDiarmid Park.

"We had very good control of the game but lacked a bit of quality in the final third," he tells BBC Sportsound.

"It was difficult in the second half when they went down to 10 men. There was no flow to the game at all.

"We went for it, changed the formation to get a lot of attacking players on the pitch and it's nice to get the result.

"We've got a lot of belief in ourselves and we're going to get better. It's great to go into the big derby next week feeling confident."

On the red card for Saints captain Murray Davidson, Johnson reckons it was "a yellow-and-a-half".

Hibs were the better team throughout, they had the better chances although there weren't that many. They dominated possession, looked strong at the back and bossed the midfield but they weren't creative enough up front

Hibs left it very late but there's no question the visitors are good value for maximum points.

Rocky Bushiri didn't know much about it as Josh Campbell's header hit him on the way in on 90 minutes.

St Johnstone were on the back foot throughout the first half, improved slightly after the break, but then were back up against it when Murray Davidson was sent packing for a late challenge on Ryan Porteous.

  17. FULL-TIME Kilmarnock 1-1 Dundee Unitedpublished at 16:55 British Summer Time 30 July 2022

Ash Taylor's 90th-minute volley rescued a point for Kilmarnock on their return to the Scottish Premiership.

Dylan Levitt's rifled effort on the stroke of half-time looked like it would start Jack Ross' reign as United manager with a win - until Ian Harkes was shown a second yellow card.

Kilmarnock piled on the pressure, which eventually told when Taylor popped up at the back-post to smash the ball home from close range.

After the first half display from Ross County, this is quite the scoreline.

County will be devastated that they didn't capitalise on their early dominance after goals from Alan Forrest and Barry McKay seal an opening day three points for Robbie Neilson's side.

Jordan White replied for County but it came too late for Malky Mackay's side.

Hibs finally find a way through!

It's a simple goal too, with Josh Campbell stealing in at the back to meet a Ewan Henderson free-kick with his head. The ball then cannons off team-mate Rocky Bushiri, standing almost right on the line, before it hits the net.
