  2. 'We need to be more clinical' - Postecogloupublished at 18:59 British Summer Time 31 July 2022

    FT: Celtic 2-0 Aberdeen

Celtic manager Ange Postecoglou thought it was a comfortable opening-day win for his reigning champions against Aberdeen.

"I thought we started the game really well and had good control of it," he tells BBC Scotland. "Then the last 15 minutes of the first-half, we got a bit slack with our passing and allowed Aberdeen to come into the game a bit as it became more open.

"But in the second-half I thought we addressed that and controlled the game, but I just thought we needed to be a bit more decisive as we were wasteful in front of goal today.

"I never felt threatened at any stage. There was no need for us to allow for that to creep into our game. I just thought we didn't take our chances and we need to be more clinical."

  3. 'Difficult afternoon' - Goodwinpublished at 18:55 British Summer Time 31 July 2022

    FT: Celtic 2-0 Aberdeen

Aberdeen manager Jim Goodwin is philosophical about the defeat by Celtic, saying his side "were just not good enough".

"It was a difficult afternoon," he tells BBC Scotland. "We knew how difficult the fixture was going to be on Celtic's flag day.

"Unfortunately, we couldn't have got off to a worse start than we did. We gave away a silly corner and quite frankly didn't defend it as well as we should have.

"The players didn't let their heads go down and tried to play at time, albeit a little sloppy in possession, and we had a decent chance through Jonny and it would have been interesting had that got in.

We have to give credit to Celtic - they were the better side. We just have to put it behind us and I'm not going to be too hard on the players."

Jim Goodwin has made sweeping changes - near enough a new team. So Jim Goodwin needs time. But I think the fans would've been a bit disappointed at times as it was more of the same old stuff, which didn't work

  6. Robinson rues Kelly's heroicspublished at 18:40 British Summer Time 31 July 2022

    FT: St Mirren 0-1 Motherwell

St Mirren manager Stephen Robinson says Motherwell goalkeeper Liam Kelly made "some of the best saves I've seen" to repel his side.

“There’s not a lot more we can do," Robinson tells BBC Scotland. "We’ve created 10-12 clear chances. The ones we did get on target, we have to take our hat off to Liam Kelly - he was in inspired form. He was outstanding – some of the best saves I’ve seen.

“Our general play and the amount of crosses we put into the box was very good, so I’ve told the boys to keep their heads up.

"It’s not often at St Mirren you get a standing ovation when you lose, but I think the fans can see where we’re going and the new players bedding in and getting better. We’ll play a heck of a lot worse than that and pick up points."

  7. Kelly save 'world class'published at 18:36 British Summer Time 31 July 2022

    FT: St Mirren 0-1 Motherwell

Motherwell interim manager Steven Hammell was understandably thrilled with the hard-fought victory over St Mirren two days after the exit of Graham Alexander.

"It’s been a tough work with the manager [leaving] and the trip to Sligo not going our way, but we felt we could come here and win," he says.

“We knew we had to defend our box well. They flood it at every occasion, but we stood up and dealt with that."

St Mirren were denied by a couple of excellent saves from goalkeeper Liam Kelly.

“Liam has been brilliant and it’s no surprise to me what he’s produced there," he adds. "The save in the first half is world class."

    FT: St Mirren 0-1 Motherwell

Steven Hammell is refusing to rule himself out of the running for the full-time Motherwell job after starting his interim tenure with a win in Paisley.

"We spoke to the chairman and [chief executive] Alan Burrows after the game here and we'll have a chat again later in the week," the interim manager tells to BBC Scotland.

“Whatever this club thinks is the best answer just now, I’m happy to do that."

It has been pretty comprehensive for Celtic - they were well ahead. Aberdeen need to have a little more ambition when they come down here. We have witnessed too many occasions where the performance is just trying to not let Celtic play - and, in truth, it's not worked. Celtic easily could've had another two or three

  12. FULL-TIME Celtic 2-0 Aberdeenpublished at 18:22 British Summer Time 31 July 2022

Celtic ease to victory thanks to Stephen Welsh's early header and Jota's stunning strike late in the second half.

In between, Aberdeen did miss a great chance to equalise through Jonny Hayes, but apart from that, the visitors rarely threatened to take anything from the game.

Celtic can be better with the ball. They haven't been great with the ball today. But, when they lose it, they work their socks off to get it back - they don't give up on it. The players' work ethic is still what it was at last season and they'll want to maintain that as the season goes on
