  1. Will competitive match sharpness prevail?published at 14:09 British Summer Time 31 July 2022

    Celtic v Aberdeen (16:30)

It's Celtic's first competitive game of the season, while Aberdeen have already won all four of their League Cup group games - beating lower league Peterhead, Dumbarton, Stirling Albion and Raith Rovers, scoring 12 times without conceding. Will that give the visitors an extra edge today?

Celtic, meanwhile, have beaten Wiener Viktoria, Banik Ostrava and Norwich City and drawn with Rapid Vienna, Blackburn Rovers and Legia Warsaw in friendlies.

Celtic's Callum McGregor insisted on Friday that those have prepared them well because they were "played at a good tempo" while training has also been very competitive.

The Scotland midfielder will undertake the "huge honour" of unfurling the league flag for the first time as Celtic captain ahead of kick-off.

  2. Fir Park return for Robinson?published at 14:06 British Summer Time 31 July 2022

    St Mirren v Motherwell (15:00)

A more timely opening fixture could not have been handed to Motherwell given Graham Alexander's departure following Thursday's ignominious Europa Conference League qualifying defeat by Sligo Rovers.

A newspaper report has claimed the Fir Park club want back his predecessor, Stephen Robinson, who just happens to himself be under a bit of pressure after today's hosts, St Mirren, failed to qualify from their League Cup group.

Sources close to Robinson have dismissed the suggestion, but hopefully the man will clarify soon to Sportsound ahead of kick-off.
