  4. Can QPR banish Loftus blues?published at 14:50 British Summer Time 6 August 2022

    QPR v Middlesbrough (15:00 BST)

    Loftus RoadImage source, Getty Images

I must admit, stats leave me a bit cold sometimes. You know the ones, 'X hasn't won a game on a Thursday since 1953'. Who cares? Football's about emotions and passions, experiences and memories of moments, not insignificant patterns over years and years.

Anyway, having whinged about stats, I'm now going to deliver one that will certainly leave QPR fans cold. Four defeats in five Championship games at Loftus Road.

Why does this little pocket of footballing fervour, on South Africa road and up from the Springbok, just a short walk from White City and the old Broadcasting House, partisan turf no less, fail to provide comfort.

Michael Beale will have to work out that conundrum, although will be pleased to realise QPR have not lost to the Teessiders in six attempts.

However, with a hunt for a striker ongoing after Andre Gray and Charlie Austin hopped it, they'll need to be sharper than their 1-0 defeat by Blackburn last time out.

Boro boss Wilder, having seen a very good 45 minutes on the attack and a more nervy 45 on the backfoot in their opener against West Brom, might just hope they can add to their woes.

  5. Bright starts... whose fades today?published at 14:47 British Summer Time 6 August 2022

    Preston v Hull (15:00 BST)

Jean Michael SeriImage source, Getty Images

There is a nice glow of optimism at both Preston and Hull after interesting summers.

Ryan Lowe's Lilywhites have recruited smartly, using the loan market to acquire Alvaro Fernandez from Manchester United and Troy Parrott from Spurs, plus Ben Woodburn and Robbie Brady amongst the permanent deals.

They were held to a draw by Wigan in their opener, despite Ched Evans' dismissal.

Hull's Turkish takeover has brought eastern promise to the east of Yorkshire, with Acun Ilicali pumping investment into the playing staff for Shota Arveladze's benefit.

Jean Michael Seri's arrival brought with it an opening day winner against Bristol City, while another newcomer Ozan Tufan registered his first goal for the equaliser.

Whose bubble will be pricked today?

  6. Can Blades and Lions back up again?published at 14:44 British Summer Time 6 August 2022

Sheff Utd v Millwall (15:00 BST)

Sheffield United playersImage source, Getty Images

One of the most enjoyable things about last season's Championship season was the race for the play-offs, particularly as it seemed the top two were practically sewn up.

Two teams that helped generate that excitement were Sheffield United - one of the expected forces in the second-tier; and Millwall - who emerged from the middle ground to battle it out for a place in the top six.

The Blades were edged out by eventual winners Nottingham Forest in a two-legged thriller of a semi, while the Lions just missed out in the end by a few points.

If both are to be involved again, winning games like this one will be crucial. Bramall Lane will be some cauldron, as two sets of highly-passionate fans cram into the classic old stadium to see their teams go for it.

Defeat by Watford slightly spoilt the restart under Paul Heckingbottom for United, while Millwall's 2-0 home win over Stoke was the perfect start to life post West Brom-departed playmaker Jed Wallace.

  7. Burnley enjoying Kompany flowpublished at 14:40 British Summer Time 6 August 2022

    Burnley v Luton (15:00 BST)

    Vincent KompnyImage source, Getty Images

Being a superb player doesn't always translate to being a great manager - after all, imparting knowledge, skill and strategy is far different from just having the technique, the skills and the football brain.

Vincent Kompany found that out the hard way at hometown team Anderlecht with a few struggles along the way, but early signs are impressive at Burnley that he has gleaned much from his introduction to management,

The opening night win over Huddersfield was impressive, featuring sharp, incisive football and a smart goal by new-boy Ian Maatsen.

Their opponents today, Luton, are in 'second album syndrome' territory under boss Nathan Jones.

Last year's unexpected run to the play-offs was electrifying for the Kenilworth Road faithful, only ended in the final four by Huddersfield Town.

Following that up might be tough, as their goalless home draw with Birmingham last week showed, and a trip to Turf Moor is always a tough old journey for any club.

Mixed reaction at full-time from the Norwich fans, a smattering of boos and some applause - but Norwich have their first point of the season.

Norwich made all the running once they had equalised but Wigan held them at bay.

    Simon Lappin
Former Norwich midfielder on BBC Radio Norfolk

If you're looking for the positives, Norwich have got a goal back and they've hit the bar.

But they've lacked the final ball in the final third.

Norwich won't have things their own way this season. Teams will make it hard for them and Wigan have done that.

It's frustrating because Norwich started so brightly.

  11. FULL-TIMEpublished at 14:32 British Summer Time 6 August 2022

    Norwich 1-1 Wigan

A frantic finale comes to an end with neither side able to find a late winner, with Ben Amos going into the book for wasting time in the final minute.

Max Aarons' equaliser rescues a point for Norwich who conceded early on against Wigan through James McClean's strike.

However the match will be overshadowed by a serious injury to Dimitrios Giannoulis.

10 (you read that right) minutes added on.

That's after a stoppage earlier on in the second half due to what looked to be a serious injury to Dimitrios Giannoulis.

Meanwhile, Norwich throw on Gabriel Sara on for Max Aarons.

  18. SUBSTITUTIONpublished at 89 mins

Norwich are looking for a penalty rather than a finishing touch. There are bodies lying about all over the place!

  20. Postpublished at 89 mins

    Norwich 1-1 Wigan

Max Aarons and Josh Sargent are both down in the Wigan box from separate challenges from Wigan but the hosts do not win a penalty on either occasion.

The first challenge comes from Tom Naylor on Aarons which does catch him on the shin. Meanwhile, there's much less in the Sargent incident.

How would you call that one?
