  1. Two deadline day deals done by Kompanypublished at 19:55 British Summer Time 2 September 2022

West Brom v Burnley (20:00 BST)

Burnley boss Vincent Kompany was successful with two deadline-day loan signings.

Striker Halil Dervisoglu, 22, came on a season-long loan deal from Premier League side Brentford, while German defender Jordan Beyer, 22, also arrived on a season's loan from Bundesliga side Borussia Monchengladbach.

But they then missed out on a third when Swansea City rejected three separate bids for striker Michael Obafemi.

That leaves Kompany with a tally of 13 signings since he took charge, for the loss of Nick Pope, James Tarkowski, Ben Mee, Nathan Collins, Dwight McNeil and Max Cornet.

  2. Baggies on deadline daypublished at 19:53 British Summer Time 2 September 2022

West Brom v Burnley (20:00 BST)

Having previously made three key summer signings - John Swift, Jed Wallace and Okay Yokuslu - Albion boss Steve Bruce did get one important box ticked.

Having lost the luckless Daryl Dike again to injury, Bruce then fought off competiton from his former club Birmingham City to sign striker Brandon Thomas-Asante from League Two club Salford for an undisclosed fee.

He also brought in free agent defender Martin Kelly, who has over a decades' worth of top flight experience with Liverpool and Crystal Palace.

But Albion then failed to land either of their two final potential targets, Fulham midfielder Josh Onomah and former England international Theo Walcott.

For Onomah, it would have been his third time playing under Bruce.

He was signed for Aston Villa on a season-long loan in August 2017. And he played under Bruce again the following season when he spent the 2018-19 season on loan at Sheffield Wednesday, signed by Jos Luhukay, until his February sacking, then under Bruce and Steve Agnew.

  3. The thin dividepublished at 19:51 British Summer Time 2 September 2022

West Brom v Burnley (20:00 BST)

West Bromwich Albion and Burnley share one thing in common tonight.

Both teams have lost just once in seven games this season - but they are 11 places apart.

That is the danger of taking too much notice of early season league tables.

No manager will ever admit to giving them any sort of serious credence until 10 or so games have gone - unless they're top, that is!

Tonight though, while Burnley's two extra wins to Albion's two extra draws gives the Clarets four extra points, to sit third, to the Baggies' 14th, it's even tighter on goals.

Burnley have scored just two more (13, to Albion's 11) and conceded two fewer (7 to 9). A thin divide, as they say.

Tonight throws together a meeting of two former Premier League title-winning captains from Manchester - as Steve Bruce's West Bromwich Albion lock horns with Vincent Kompany's Burnley.

The pair might have much in common when it comes to their football pedigree. Both gnarled old centre-halves, both winners and both key figureheads in their respective sides' pursuit of glory.

"Where do you want the statue, Vincent Kompany?" after his stunning 35-yard matchwinner for Man City against Chelsea is as iconic a Premier League moment as Bruce's two injury-time goals against Sheffield Wednesday to win Manchester United their first Premier League title in 1993.

But tonight it's not the Premier League at stake, it's the Championship - and the business of how both clubs get back to the land of milk and honey. And, at this early stage of the new campaign, the Clarets are ahead on points.
