  1. 'Gerrard threw Mings under the bus a little bit'published at 11:39 British Summer Time 13 August 2022

Aston Villa v Everton (12:30 BST)

Micah Richards says Steven Gerrard's comments about Tyrone Mings are out of character for the Aston Villa boss.

Speaking after Villa's opening-day loss to Bournemouth, Gerrard was asked about Mings' absence and said he will select the former captain again when he "looks me in the eye and shows that he's ready to play".

Richards told BBC Radio 5 Live's Monday Night Club: "I’m flabbergasted to be honest because Mings is well-loved by the dressing room by all accounts and the Villa fans seem to love him as well.

"He tweeted when he lost the captaincy and he seemed to take it well. It’s not like Gerrard, he sort of threw him under the bus a little bit there.

"Normally you agree with everything Gerrard says, he’s straight to the point, direct and he’s a manager that will deal with anything internal in the dressing room.

"But he sort of put the feelers out there that there is a little bit more to be honest. Nobody would take losing the captaincy well, that’s just a natural reaction. But I just feel, for both Mings and Gerrard, they could have kept that internal.

"Maybe Gerrard was frustrated because they just lost the game and he was asked the question so gave an honest answer, but normally he keeps that between the group. It’s very interesting."

Aston Villa manager Steven Gerrard said this week that he will select Tyrone Mings again when he "looks me in the eye and shows that he's ready to play".

Gerrard made John McGinn the new Villa captain in place of Mings last month. The midfielder keeps the armband today.

England centre-half Mings, 29, was an unused substitute as Villa started the season with a 2-0 defeat at Bournemouth last Saturday.

"When I made the decision over the captaincy, I set him that challenge," Gerrard told BBC Radio WM.

"We said to Tyrone 'if you get back to your consistent best, you'll be back in the team'."

At the time, Mings said he had "no issues" with losing the captaincy but asked after Saturday's game if his omission was down to his reaction, Gerrard replied: "It's a little bit of that.

"He's also missed some training time with an injury and there's a niggle in the background as well.

"When Tyrone is back at his best and looks me in the eye and shows that he's ready to play, he'll get opportunities."

Looks like Mings has proved himself to Stevey G.

Aston Villa v Everton (12:30 BST)

After losing their opening game - 1-0 at home to Chelsea - Everton have been active in the transfer market.

Midfielder Amadou Onana was at the opener at Goodison and has since completed his move from Lille, while defender Conor Coady has joined on an initial loan from Wolves.

The former should bring a bit of bite to the Toffees in the middle of the pitch, with the latter a perfect fit for the middle of a back three.

Will the pair help lift the Blues? And will they be enough? Losing Richarlison, coupled with an injury to Dominic Calvert-Lewin, makes a forward signing an absolute must.

So which of the new boys start? Let's find out...

  5. 'Massive game'published at 11:27 British Summer Time 13 August 2022

Former Wales captain on BBC Radio 5 live

I have a lot of friends in the Everton camp and it is a massive game for them as well.

Both teams need the win, both are very similar and both have two iconic managers. A massive game to start the day.

With Villa it is a difficult one to call. I am a fan of Gerrard as a manager as I was of him as a player. They just didn't look right last season and I am not sure if he knows his best XI or best shape.

He needs to settle those Villa fans down, I have a lot of friends and family who are Villa fans and they need to be settled down quickly.

  7. 'Two iconic Premier League players'published at 11:23 British Summer Time 13 August 2022

Aston Villa v Everton (12:30 BST)

    Darren Fletcher
    BBC Radio 5 live commentator

This weekend the Premier League is celebrating the 30th anniversary and it is quite appropriate that the weekend kicks off with two absolutely iconic Premier League midfielders leading their respective teams in Steven Gerrard and Frank Lampard.

  8. Postpublished at 11:20 British Summer Time 13 August 2022

Today we have five games at 3pm, which is a rare treat.

There are some intriguing games in the mix too. Can Arsenal carry on where they left off at Palace against a Leicester side struggling to add to their talent pool? Will Brighton, fresh from beating Man Utd at Old Trafford, or a confident Newcastle triumph at the Amex? Are Bournemouth capable of the mother of all shocks at Man City?

After all that, Brentford host a smarting Man Utd. But first, we have a battle between two of English football's top-flight old guard, a clash between a pair of former England midfielders many felt couldn't operate in the same XI.

  9. Thrills and spillspublished at 11:18 British Summer Time 13 August 2022

The Premier League returned with a bang last weekend, serving up the kind of thrills, spills, goals and gasp-inducing action to which we've become accustomed from the best league in the world.

The script was followed by some - Tottenham did what Tottenham have been doing under Antonio Conte, Chelsea ground out a win and Erling Haaland scored goals.

But we had enough improvising to keep things fresh, thanks to Fulham, Bournemouth and Brighton.

There were new teams, new signings, fresh kits and a bit of sunshine just to really make sure everyone was in a happy mood.

So bring on the second weekend, I say. Today, there are seven whole games of Premier League football to keep us interested, and we'll be keeping track of every last one of them here at BBC Sport.
