  2. 'A dream win'published at 20:29 British Summer Time 13 August 2022

    FT: Brentford 4-0 Man Utd

    Chris Sutton
Former Premier League striker on BBC Radio 5 Live

Where does that rank in terms of Brentford's history and big victories? It has to be up there. We saw a marvellous start to last season, when they beat Arsenal.

Beating Manchester United 4-0, if you're a Brentford fan, that would have been your wildest dream.

Brentford at home, when they get that stadium going they are rocking.

  3. 'We have to be better'published at 20:25 British Summer Time 13 August 2022

    FT: Brentford 4-0 Man Utd

    Manchester United

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag, speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live: "We will analyse and we will move forward but one thing is quite clear, we have to do things better.

"This team is good enough to beat Brighton and Brentford which we didn't do so we have to question ourselves."

  4. 'I hope people give us credit'published at 20:23 British Summer Time 13 August 2022

    FT: Brentford 4-0 Man Utd

    Brentford

Brentford manager Thomas Frank, speaking to BBC Match of the Day: "I was very pleased, very proud of the performance. To beat Manchester United 4-0 - biggest club in the world, world-class players - makes some remarkable memories for the Brentford fans here. It's crazy. In some way unreal.

"It's no surprise that we win today because I know we're good. Maybe it wasn't a 4-0 game. We deserved to win, but it wasn't a 4-0. I really hope that people look into our performance and give us credit, because if you win 4-0 you must be doing something good."

  5. 'You need to be brave'published at 20:21 British Summer Time 13 August 2022

    FT: Brentford 4-0 Man Utd

More from Man Utd keeper David de Gea:

"Of course we have to react much better and be capable of scoring goals. It was a poor performance.

"It's too easy to play in pre-season - you play for nothing. When you play the games that matter you need bravery, more consistency and proper players.

"We just need to stick together as a team and keep working. It's just the beginning. We have a lot to improve as a team with a new manager."

  6. 'I feel sorry for the fans'published at 20:18 British Summer Time 13 August 2022

    FT: Brentford 4-0 Man Utd

    Manchester United

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag, speaking to Sky Sports: "It's difficult for me, it's surprising when you start the game like this. In 35 minutes you concede four goals. The team has to take responsibility. I feel really sorry for the fans - they did everything to support us but we let them down.

"You have to take responsibility on the pitch as a team and as individuals, that's what we didn't do. What I asked them to do is play with belief and take responsibility for the performance. We have to work on that.

"The manager is responsible as well. He has the main responsibility and I'll take that and work on that."

'I'm worried about more panic buys'published at 20:15 British Summer Time 13 August 2022

Martin: As a Manchester United fan, congrats to Brentford for a cracking performance. No complaints on the result. It's not the losing that hurts for us, happy to lose to a better team on the day and hold our hands up. What really hurts right now is that there isn't 100% commitment from the team or any real identity to speak of. Not even close to either to be honest. Worried now of even more awful panic buys!

Mark: The better side won it’s as simple as that. Brentford are a football team, Man Utd are something else.

  9. 'It is my responsibility'published at 20:10 British Summer Time 13 August 2022

    FT: Brentford 4-0 Man Utd

    Manchester United

Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag, speaking to BBC Match of the Day:

"It is my responsibility to give an explanation. It is clear the performance was really poor. When you make mistakes like this, you can't win the game.

It is about taking responsibility on the pitch, you cannot make such mistakes at our level. We had to deal with the disappointment and bring the belief on the pitch.

You have to be ready for a game and be ready for the battle as individuals and as a team. We have to push each other and bring the demands in because it is not good.

It is clear we need players but I don't want to think about that in this moment. The good players we had should have been better.

I hoped for a better start, but still I have to believe because I have seen good things but the two games from now are disappointing.

  10. 'Where is the recruitment process?'published at 20:08 British Summer Time 13 August 2022

    FT: Brentford 4-0 Man Utd

    Robbie Savage
Ex-Wales midfielder on BBC Radio 5 Live

The recruitment has not been good enough over the last ten years. Look at the centre forwards they have signed. Cavani, Ibrahimovic, Falcao, Ighalo. Now they're linked with Arnautovic. Where is the recruitment process?

Mark: The credit should go to Brentford, and Brighton last week rather than bang on about how bad Manchester United have been.

Anon: Brentford absolutely well done, a proper team! And please when will United fans accept Bruno Fernandes is not a good player, would never get in a Fergie side.

    FT: Brentford 4-0 Man Utd

    Manchester United

Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea, speaking to Sky Sports: "I'm just taking my responsibility today. I think I cost three points for my team. It was a poor performance from myself.

"After the first mistake and then the second, it was very difficult for my team-mates. At the moment it's tough every time we concede a goal. I should save the first shot - [if I had] the result would be different."

Mark: Frenkie de Jong is currently asking his agent to contact Brentford.

Anon: Watch out Brentford - Man United will be after your manager!

Chef: United have the most overrated players ever. When Fernandes came in he had a couple of decent games but United were so bad he stood out and everyone thought he was fantastic. He's bang average. Same as Maguire, Shaw, Rashford, McTominay... massively overrated. This result shouldn't be a surprise. Brentford simply have better players.

    FT: Brentford 4-0 Man Utd

    Brentford

Brentford midfielder Mathias Jensen, speaking to Sky Sports: "It felt like we were on top of everything. They couldn't cope with our pressure, our second balls, our intensity. You could see they were struggling.

"It was either me or Josh Dasilva in that situation [pressing in midfied]. We had to put pressure on Christian Eriksen because we knew he wanted to dictate the game."

On his goal: "It's amazing. I didn't know what to do. A lot of things went through the mind."

Anon: For anybody that doesn't support Manchester United this is so funny, they go from one crisis to another, just hope it lasts all season.

Stephen: Whilst this is an absolute disgrace to watch, I do feel there's a bit of realism and context required. You don't go to school for two days then sit your exams! A promising pre-season maybe helped get us carried away a little, but true United fans understand this is stage one of the rebuild.
