Sultan: Owners and fans have to give new managers like Lampard, Gerrard and Arteta some time grow. Feels like many just want them to transfer their playing talismanics to management overnight. Doesn't work that way. Even Sir Alex Ferguson struggled at the start.

    Aston Villa 1-0 Everton

    Gary Rose
    BBC Sport at Villa Park

It has been much better from Everton so far in this half. Aston Villa have really struggled with set pieces and balls into the box and that looks their best chance to grab an equaliser.

Frank Lampard has Salomon Rondon on the bench, will he be tempted to turn to him soon?

Great players don't just transition to great managers. Neither of Gerrard or Lampard are achieving much. Everton look uninspired by the appointment, Villa were just as good under Dean Smith.

Misiekkoziol: Judging by what they've shown so far, Everton will struggle to stay up this season, and Lampard will struggle to find another top-ish job.

Ste: How can Lampard look at that first half and not see the need to bring on an actual striker?

This is threatening further goals now!

Demarai Gray cuts inside and forces a decent block from Villa keeper Emiliano Martinez.

Gray hasn't scored since last December - a winner against Arsenal at Goodison Park. How the Toffees would love to see him hit a hot streak.

Michael: I have said it before and I'll say it again. Everton need relegation to reset the club. Annual relegation battles will help no body at that club. They bring in this untested Belgian guy and think he's their saviour! Desperate!!

Anon: No desire from the team. Bring in some under 23's. Sort out a striker asap woeful up front.

Thomas: Rondon has to come on, we don't score enough goals to operate without a striker.

Digne makes amends with a clearing header to stop Everton's free-kick causing any problems.

The away side come forward again, though, and Dwight McNeil flicks an effort wide after Villa allow a looping ball to drop in the box.

    This is encouraging, though.

Nathan Patterson twists and turns deep in Villa territory to get around Lucas Digne, who drags him down. It's a booking for the ex-Everton man and a dangerous Toffees free-kick.

Brian: You can't win games just by defending. Goals are imperative. Everton could set a record for fewest in a season. They look like being the whipping boys for the top 5. Had them marked to go down. Think I am on a winner!

Ste: Knowing we don't have a fit, decent striker for 6 weeks and not buying one to replace Richarlison is just throwing away points. Stupidity from Everton.

Richard: When three players get injured in a game-and-a-half, and key players are already injured from preseason, you have to wonder about the plans to get the squad ready. Seems like the training might've been wrong, and/or the medical staff need upgrading.

Villa look quick. Everton don't have many options but when they do they've got the possibility of being a threat, but they don't take the chances.

Zahi: It’s almost physically painful to watch this Everton side. No desire and absolutely no quality.

Ste: As his only fit striker, not picking Rondon to start the game is both a huge mistake for Lampard given how much they are missing that threat and a huge slap in the face for Rondon.

Daniel: Everton's troubles in recent times further highlighted by the presence of Tom Davies in their side. The guy is woeful. And that's an understatement.

Danny Ings' goal is the difference.

Villa have been the more coherent, the team most likely to score goals.

Everton need to find some way of hurting the home side with this somewhat improvised attack.
