The only English player with more direct free-kick goals in Premier League history for Newcastle is Alan Shearer (four).

That moment was theatre when VAR took back the red card, we're all at home debating it, it was entertainment. Professional and cynical fouls are an art and part of the game, it's clever.

Since Pep Guardiola's first season as a Premier League manager in 2016-17, City have scored the opening goal of a match within the first five minutes 29 times in the competition - at least 14 more than any other club in this time (Liverpool 15).

  12. 'I'm pleased for the players we got something today'published at 19:05 British Summer Time 21 August 2022

    FT: Newcastle 3-3 Man City

    Newcastle United

Speaking to BBC Sport, Newcastle boss Eddie Howe said: "We started poorly and we weren't quite playing how we wanted to. Maybe the goal took the pressure off and then before half time we were excellent and we committed everything we had to the game and it's a valuable point for us.

"You need the mentality first, the bravery and the willingness to take a risk. The alternative is to sit back and you think you are safe in numbers but you're not. The players executed it brilliantly and some of our counter-attacking was a real threat.

"I'm very pleased to see Almiron score. He was excellent and his pre-season was good. A fitting reward for him.

"You need performances but you need the result at the end of the day so I'm pleased for the players we got something today."

Paul: So refreshing to not see City just walk to a routine win. Hope this happens more often this season and more teams have a go at them, for the good of the league!

  14. 'Newcastle one of toughest opponents'published at 19:03 British Summer Time 21 August 2022

    Newcastle 3-3 Man City

    Manchester City

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola to Sky Sports: "We could have not won today.

"Newcastle are becoming one of the toughest opponents for sure.

Leeds beat Chelsea today. The Premier League is so difficult for everyone. It shows how amazing we’ve done for five years and how difficult it will be.

"To see the team fight to the end is enough."

  15. 'Proper football game'published at 19:01 British Summer Time 21 August 2022

    Newcastle 3-3 Man City

    Manchester City

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola to BBC Sport: "Proper football game. We started really well. We lost some duels and they could run. Once the game was open they were better for 20 minutes.

"The team showed who we are.

    "Allan Saint-Maximin is really dangerous.

"We should take more time in the final third."

On the overturned red card: "I didn’t watch it. The referee and VAR said it was not. I saw it in front of me but after I didn’t watch it."

“That atmosphere after the game, that is what football is all about.”

  16. 'A roller-coaster of emotions'published at 18:58 British Summer Time 21 August 2022

    FT: Newcastle 3-3 Man City

    Newcastle United

Speaking to Sky Sports, Newcastle boss Eddie Howe said: "It was an incredible game and a roller-coaster of emotions we went 1-0 down which is the worst possible start against this team because then you have to chase the game but I think the players responded brilliantly.

"For the neutral, I'm sure it was an incredible game but we needed something from the game and the players deserved it. It was mentally tiring because I was trying to help the team when you know the game has swung in their balance but you also don't want to do something that harms us as well.

"Hopefully everyone is entertained and we got something from it. We brought our physicality to the match, we spoke about it all week and we wanted to make them uncomfortable. We wanted to put them under pressure and leave here feeling they had been in a game. Certainly we were in their faces and we committed very well.

"If you press high you are potentially leaving space in behind so it's a balancing act and I have to credit the discipline of the group because we did it very well.

"We knew it would be a difficult end to the game because of the quality of their decision-making on the ball, they don't give you a rest. We are also indebted to Nick Pope because he made a number of good saves but we also had our moments the other way and I thought we were a constant threat in the game."

  19. We wanted to go toe-to-toe with them'published at 18:49 British Summer Time 21 August 2022

    FT: Newcastle 3-3 Man City

    Newcastle United

Speaking to Sky Sports, Newcastle defender Kieran Trippier said: "We wanted to go toe-to-toe with them and I thought we did that throughout the match. Manchester City are a top side and they have the quality to get themselves back in the game but it shows just how far we have come since January. The lads are disappointed after being 3-1 up, but we have to take the positives."

On man of the match Allan Saint-Maximin: "He is the type of player that gets everyone on the edge of their seat, he is a top quality player and he has shown today what he is all about. I'm delighted he is my team-mate. He gets us up the pitch and wins us matches and he was threat throughout. For him, it's about being consistent."

On his free-kick: "I always fancy myself on free-kicks and I'm delighted I could help the team take that extra step and lead the game."

On his red card that was reversed: "I would sacrifice everything for my team and I want to win but I'm not the type of player to injure anyone. I spoke to Kevin [De Bruyne] after the game and the ref overturned the decision."

Saint-Maximin said: "We are disappointed because we really wanted to win the game to show what we can do, the future is bright for Newcastle if we can keep playing at this level. I try to improve a lot and I listen a lot to my friend (Trippier). He has played for very good clubs and for England so I just try to play with my best and show the world what I'm capable of."

  20. 'Bit disappointed we didn't score the fourth'published at 18:48 British Summer Time 21 August 2022

    Newcastle 3-3 Man City

    Manchester City

Manchester City's Bernardo Silva to BBC Sport: "It was a very intense game. We started very well. The first 15 minutes were ours. My perception on the pitch was that we started attacking too quick.

"When we start playing like this and it's too quick it's better for the opponents. The last 25 or 30 minutes of the first half were very tough. They could have scored more than twice in that time.

"Overall we played quite well but not controlling their counter-attacks and runners. You'll suffer and that's what happened today.

"We knew how tough it is to come here. The atmosphere is great. It's a very physical team. They've been great over the last few months. They're in a great state of mind with very positive energy.

"We should have controlled the game better than we did today.

"We scored the third goal in the 64th minute. It was very early. I'm a bit disappointed we didn't score the fourth. But still a good reaction from the team.

"Not a perfect game but we take the point. It is what it is. Seven points from three games isn't bad."

On his future: "I'm happy. I'm doing my best to help the club. I'm very focused here."
