  1. 'The most unlucky and undeserved loss in the history of football'published at 13:08 British Summer Time 21 August 2022

West Ham v Brighton (14:00 BST)

James Jones, We Are West Ham podcast, external

West Ham's 1-0 defeat at Nottingham Forest may have been the most unlucky and undeserved loss in the history of football.

Two efforts bounced down off the crossbar and back off the goalline without crossing it – one from Pablo Fornals and a Said Benrahma free-kick.

Declan Rice missed a penalty and Forest’s goal was the biggest fluke ever seen.

And that is not to mention the refereeing decisions.

Rob Jones disallowed a Benrahma goal before half-time when Orel Mangala stepped into Michail Antonio’s path in the build-up and the Hammers striker had the audacity to collide with him.

Jones was looking right at it and gave nothing, yet VAR bafflingly recommended a pitch-side monitor review… and we all know what happens then.

All this before Jones somehow missed Scott McKenna playing volleyball on Forest’s goal-line as he scooped Tomas Soucek’s goal-bound effort away with his hands.

VAR needed to intervene again - this time to tell Jones to award the clearest penalty since football began.

Justice appeared done, but to add insult to injury, Jones decided to ignore the laws of the game and only show McKenna a yellow card when he should have been sent off.

Last time out in the Premier League, West Ham lost 1-0 at Nottingham Forest to remain without a point this league campaign. That scoreline tells only part of the story of last Sunday's game, though.

I'll let one of their own fill you in on the details...

  3. Kehrer is a 'really good acquisition'published at 13:05 British Summer Time 21 August 2022

West Ham v Brighton (14:00 BST)

West Ham assistant manager Billy McKinlay feels new signing Thilo Kehrer will improve the squad across "a number of areas".

The Hammers signed Germany defender Kehrer, 25, from Paris St-Germain on a four-year contract on Wednesday.

"He has good experience, is versatile and has played at a high level with Germany and PSG so he will bring a lot to us and we’re looking forward to working with him," said McKinlay.

"He’s played predominately for the national team at left-back and centre-back for PSG last season, so we feel we have a really good acquisition for the squad.

"He will be able to add to us in a number of areas."

    Leeds v Chelsea (14:00 BST)

Leeds make one change from the side which let a 2-0 lead slip last weekend against Southampton and it's a big one: Patrick Bamford fails to make the starting line-up with a going injury.

The forward was a doubt after coming off during the draw with the Saints, but it's a blow nonetheless. Daniel James will start instead.

Leeds XI: Meslier, Kristensen, Koch, Llorente, Struijk; Roca, Adams; Aaronson, Rodrigo, Harrison, James

Subs: Klaesson, Hjelde, Drameh, Klich, Greenwood, Forshaw, Sinisterra, Summerville, Gelhardt

Chelsea recover from their latest 'Battle of the Bridge' as N'Golo Kante is replaced in midfield by Conor Gallagher.

Again, the change was expected as Kante is expected to be out for a few weeks with a hamstring problem.

But it's a big moment for Gallagher, who makes his full Chelsea debut. A proud moment for the academy graduate.

Chelsea XI: Mendy, James, Silva, Koulibaly; Loftus-Cheek, Gallagher, Jorginho, Cucurella; Mount, Havertz, Sterling

Subs: Arrizabalaga, Azpilicueta, Chalobah, Ampadu, Hudson-Odoi, Chilwell, Ziyech, Chukwuemeka, Pulisic.

  8. Still a bit of bitepublished at 12:56 British Summer Time 21 August 2022

    Leeds v Chelsea (14:00 BST)

The Leeds side from the 1960s and 70s now feature on one of the walls outside Elland Road - a mural reminder of the club's greatest ever period under manager Don Revie.

The game is a bit different now. And the rivalry between Chelsea and Leeds somewhat diluted by the latter's lengthy absence from the Premier League for much of the last two decades and Chelsea's ascent to being one of the mega-moneyed 'big six'.

But there is still a bit of bite. Older fans haven't forgotten the history, uncomplimentary songs are still sung and Elland Road will be even more spiky than usual this afternoon.

Chelsea start as clear favourites, but Leeds will be looking to make the afternoon very uncomfortable for the Blues.

The 1970 FA Cup final between Chelsea and Leeds is infamous for just how ferocious it was. Even at a time when referees were far more lenient on physical play than they are now, it was still a game of wild tackles and off-the-ball antics.

Such is its enduring reputation, it has been re-refereed twice since by leading officials according to modern interpretations of the rules. In 1997, David Elleray concluded he would have shown six red cards, while Michael Oliver opted for 11., external

On the night, referee Eric Jennings brandished just one yellow card.

Judging by his shirt, I'm guessing he just wanted to be out of there so he could get down the disco...

Thomas Tuchel and Antonio ConteImage source, Getty Images

Last weekend, Chelsea and their boss Thomas Tuchel got themselves involved in a bit of a feisty one against Tottenham.

There was a bit of niggle on the field and some aggro off it as the German and his opposite number at Spurs, Antonio Conte, got themselves involved in some handshake-related shenanigans.

The Blues boss received a one-match touchline ban and was fined £35,000 for his part in the confrontation.

His ban has been suspended temporarily, though, pending the full written reasons for the decision, which means he can be in the dugout for Sunday's Premier League game at Leeds.

Although if past history of today's fixture and the way Jesse Marsch has set out his stall are anything to go by, Tuchel might wish he was up in the stands.

Manchester City's attempts to follow Arsenal and make it three wins from three is our final game today - a big old clash between new money and even newer money at Newcastle.

Before that, though, we have two games at two - an intriguing match-up at London Stadium between the side many see as "the best of the rest" and a club threatening to challenge that unofficial crown, and a clash at Elland Road with a little bit of fiery history behind it.

I reckon it has the makings of a pretty fine Premier League Sunday. So strap in and enjoy yourselves as we bring you all the best action and reaction.

Arsenal celebrate at BournemouthImage source, Getty Images

Even in these early weeks of the season, the Premier League is beginning to take a familiar kind of shape.

Tottenham and Arsenal - members of the league's "big six" both got the results they needed yesterday to take themselves top of the table, the former for a few hours, the latter overnight.

Right behind them are champions Manchester City, who can go back top today if they win and score the goals required against Newcastle to usurp the Gunners.

Chelsea could well be up there with the trio too by then if they win at Leeds in our first game.

There are a couple of the Super League sides missing from the top-table tussle right now. But I'm just going to focus today. One of my colleagues can deal with Liverpool and the trainwreck over in Manchester tomorrow.
