Jonathan: If City players like Phil Foden continue to shoot rather than pass the ball to Erling Haaland, the "return to a recognised number 9" experiment will fail. He was brought in to score goals. Pass to him when he's got a simple tap in opportunity!

Sam: If Foden had passed to Haaland for an easy tap in instead of a speculative shot from a tight angle it would’ve been 2-0 and Newcastle wouldn’t have had the belief to come back like they have. Foden is making a habit of being selfish so far this season

  3. 'Our best performance'published at 17:24 British Summer Time 21 August 2022

    FT: Leeds 3-0 Chelsea

    Leeds United

More from Leeds boss Jesse Marsch, speaking to BBC Sport: "When you play at Elland Road you have to do so with energy and passion because that is what the fans demand. We tried to adjust match-plans so the guys can be aggressive but also intelligent with how we play. What you see is a group playing more brave, with the ball and in transition moments. We used to give the ball right back to the opponent and now we have ease to us and poise. If we can build that elegance and poise while continuing to be aggressive, we can build something.

"It is our best performance. Bench mark or not, it should give us more hunger to improve and validate the work that has been done."

On Brenden Aaronson: "The kid is non-stop. He is relentless. I knew that about him when I had him in Salzburg. He is also very intelligent and can adapt quickly. That is what you have seen. He has got better from week one to week two to week three. If he continues on this pace he has potential to really grow. That is across the whole group. It id about feeding them positive information and reinforcement and getting them to commit in every way possible. You see the work ethic. We never get out-run, we never get out-worked. I am trying to build so we don't also get out-thought."

  4. 'An important win'published at 17:22 British Summer Time 21 August 2022

    FT: Leeds 3-0 Chelsea

    Leeds United

Leeds manager Jesse Marsch, speaking to BBC Sport: "I have a lot of emotion. Obviously we know it was an important win. I am just really happy for our team. They work really hard angry to adapt in every way I ask them to do. They adapt to the environment that we have created. Validation in moments like this are really important for progress. That is what we have to understand - it is not just a win but a really good performance against a really good team and that the potential is there. We have to maximise that every day.

"We had to adjust because they started with a build-up of three. We thought they would maybe be in a four like against Tottenham. We did adjust and built that into the match plan. We had to be variable with out build-up and some of the things we were trying to do. The response to some adjustments during the game and at half-time was really good. Guys off the bench came in and gave really good performances. These games require best performances possible and we got that from individuals and the team."

Ok. I'm not a Newcastle fan but the one thing I notice about this team under Eddie Howe is a togetherness and belief. In previous years they would have folded after City taking an early lead. They look a team, and even though city will in all likelihood sort themselves out with another 45 to play, whatever the result this is so good for you Newcastle supporters. Ade

Sho: Allan Saint-Maximin absolutely ruining City here. Surely they can't keep leaving their defenders one on one against him.

An incredible performance by Newcastle. Callum Wilson just peels off and slots it past Ederson, magnificent goal, no less than Newcastle deserve. They have been magnificent this first half.

Playing against the champions, the team everyone thinks is going to win the league, Newcastle have taken the lead.

    Know what? It's been coming.

Allan Saint-Maximin gets the ball near the halfway line and has John Stones on toast.

He plays a through ball to Callum Wilson, whose first touch takes him inside Ruben Dias and he then pokes the ball past Ederson.

Newcastle playing against Man City without a recognised left back in their entire match day squad, and a very weak bench. Still a significant amount of work to do on that squad.

Oh for one second St James' Park thought Miguel Almiron was going to have his second goal.

Ederson comes racing out of his box as he likes to do and the Toon man takes the ball around him. Joao Cancelo doesn't leave him alone though and Almiron's shot is blocked.
