Will he go if Villa lose to Bolton tonight?

  4. 'Cambridge will sense they can beat Southampton'published at 19:40 British Summer Time 23 August 2022

Cambridge United v Southampton (19:45 BST)

    Chris Wise
BBC Radio 5 Live commentator at St Mary's

There's amber and black everywhere you look here: around 7,000 expected inside Cambridge's home. They will sense that they can do to Premier League Southampton what they did to Newcastle in the FA Cup at the top of the year.

Their manager is the very impressive Mark Bonner. He's 36 years old, a former season ticket holder here. He's worked his way through numerous roles to get to the top job.

He's made seven changes from their weekend draw with Charlton. Southampton have made nine tonight from that win over Leicester. There's a debut for full-back Lewis Payne.

A quirky stat, and I can't believe this will crop up for many clubs who have been in the 92 for a fair old time: this is the first time that Cambridge and Southampton have ever played each other in a senior game.

  5. 'The cameras are here for a reason'published at 19:39 British Summer Time 23 August 2022

Bolton Wanderers v Aston Villa (19:45 BST)

    Aston Villa

Aston Villa manager Steven Gerrard speaking to Sky Sports: "We're highly motivated to get into the next round. The cameras are here for a reason and we need to respect the opposition.

"On the back of a poor result you want to play again quickly. I want to see a reaction first and foremost. Attitude, motivation, respect the opposition. We know they will be up for it and come after us. If we play anywhere close to our level it will be enough to qualify.

"The cameras are here, they have an opportunity to play a Premier League team, but we have to make this about us.

"I need to see a hunger and a determination from my boys to ensure we're in that hat."

  6. 'The test is to be clinical'published at 19:39 British Summer Time 23 August 2022

    Cambridge v Southampton (19:45 BST)

Cambridge came away from Newcastle with a shock 1-0 win in the FA Cup third round last season.

"We'll certainly take playing against these big sides in cup competitions," says manager Mark Bonner.

"We're in fairly good shape. We can carry a threat against anybody when we play in our best and most confident way. We can create chances and the test is to be clinical in those moments."

  11. 'Fleetwood could benefit from changes'published at 19:35 British Summer Time 23 August 2022

Fleetwood Town v Everton (19:45 BST)

    Conor McNamara
    BBC Radio 5 live commentator

There are some guys at Fleetwood who have been part of pre-season but have had to watch the opening games and haven't had the chance to get involved yet.

As much as Scott Brown would probably want to put out his strongest team tonight, he's got to think of the season as a whole. There could be benefits from seeing what he's got.

  12. 'Man management is huge'published at 19:34 British Summer Time 23 August 2022

Fleetwood Town v Everton (19:45 BST)

    Stephen Warnock
Former England defender on BBC Radio 5 Live

There's a soft side to Scott Brown. I played in a testimonial game with him and I thought he was the tough guy, but he's an absolute gent.

He's very welcoming, very easy to talk to. He'll adapt over time and adjust to what works and doesn't work.

Man-managing players is the key component these days because you're managing so many characters and personalities in the changing room. You've got to balance that and it's a huge thing to get right.

  13. 'The greatest first-round game ever'published at 19:32 British Summer Time 23 August 2022

    Rotherham v Morecambe (19:45 BST)

Morecambe visit Rotherham tonight in a repeat of the classic 2016 fixture when The Shrimps won a penalty and a chance to make it 3-3 in the 92nd minute.

Ultimately, Jack Dunn's hat-trick was enough to help seal an epic 5-4 win after extra time for Morecambe.

  14. 'Magic of the cub'published at 19:31 British Summer Time 23 August 2022

    Rotherham v Morecambe (19:45 BST)

Miller Bear, Rotherham's mascot, is ready.

  15. Ruthless round onepublished at 19:30 British Summer Time 23 August 2022

Will the second round be as ruthless on the higher division sides as the first round was?

Nine out of 11 Championship sides were knocked out by lower division opponents in round one, meaning there's a large amount of League One and League Two sides in action over the next couple of nights.

  16. An upset under the lights?published at 19:28 British Summer Time 23 August 2022

    Stockport v Leicester (19:45 BST)

Stockport's first match in the competition for more than 12 years has a redemptive feel.

County lost 5-0 to Preston that night in front of fewer than 4,000 people during a season that would end with The Hatters finishing bottom of League Two by six points.

They will return by taking on Premier League side Leicester in front of a sell-out crowd.

  18. When the Toffees stuck five past Fleetwoodpublished at 19:25 British Summer Time 23 August 2022

Fleetwood Town v Everton (19:45 BST)

Richarlison scored twice in 17 first-half minutes and Alex Iwobi, Bernard and Moise Kean were also on the scoresheet as Everton won 5-2 at Fleetwood in the third round of the competition in September 2020.

Mark Duffy replied for Fleetwood and Callum Camps scored a cracker of an overhead kick on a night when Joey Barton, the Cod Army boss at the time, said Everton were the better team but had been flattered by the result.

If they don't, the headlines are here.
