Manchester United arrived at Manchester City accompanied by hope resulting from four Premier League wins. It gave them optimism above their current station.

It was hope and optimism that lasted roughly two minutes, as Pep Guardiola's reigning champions began a relentless siege that put United firmly in their place and ended in the reality check of a 6-3 thrashing that flattered Erik ten Hag's side outrageously.

    Leeds United

Leeds United striker Patrick Bamford speaking to MOTD: "It's still a draw but we can be happy with it. I think if any team deserved to win it was probably us. They came with a game plan which was to really slow us down and stop us playing at our intensity which obviously frustrated everyone in the crowd and us as a team. "What happened in the second half with the red card we had to do a bit of what they did in the first half. We're disappointed not to have taken the league in the first half and be holding on to something when we went down to ten men but I think a point is a good result.

    Aston Villa

Aston Villa manager Steven Gerrard speaking to MOTD: "It was very frustrating. I don't think there was much wrong with our performance today, even 11v11 we felt we had the best moments at our points.

"We came here to frustrate Leeds, we came here for a competitive game and the players really stood up well in large parts of this game.

"We got in the right areas, we created more than enough chances and that will feel slightly more frustrating because a big part of the second half was against ten men.

"But that can happen. Credit to Leeds, they defended well, they got a little bit of luck and we go away frustrated at taking one point because three was there for us as well.

"It's down to individuals taking their chances and if we do then we're talking about three points rather than one."

  6. 'Two points dropped'published at 19:10 British Summer Time 2 October 2022

FT: Leeds United 0-0 Aston Villa

    Aston Villa

Speaking to Sky Sports, Aston Villa boss Steven Gerrard said: "I'm scratching my head and I'm frustrated and I'm sure my attacking players will be as well because we created more than enough to win this match. We came here to frustrate Leeds and maybe we would have taken the point before the game but we could have had three.

"It wouldn’t be fair if I didn’t question my attacking players and I need more quality. We have had 19 shots on goal and 12 inside the area so we need to be better. Leeds defended well and dug in and you would expect that but we created more than enough and it was that last bit that was missing. If we had found that we would have been happy.

"At times Leeds wanted to go to war and we did that. We frustrated Leeds and the crowd. When our moments came we got the ball into the right areas and to the people we wanted to but it didn't happen.

"We need more goals. We need our attacking players to step forward and be more ruthless. That tally [six goals so far] is not enough at this stage of the season and we know where we want to go. We keep working and putting the sessions on a rehearsing the moments that will come their way. We have improved slightly defensively and we need to continue that but we need to keep creating these moments and hopefully our players will gobble them up.

"It feels like we dropped two points today and we missed an opportunity to take two more points and move into the middle of the league."

    Aston Villa

Aston Villa midfielder John McGinn speaking to MOTD: "Certainly it's two points dropped. A lot of frustration in the dressing room naturally, playing against ten men you should go and take chances and win the game but it doesn't always work like that.

"Leeds put their bodies on the line but we did create chances to win the game but unfortunately we didn't manage to take those.

"We'll be doing a lot of work on taking those chances which will take us up the table because we feel we've stopped the rot, we've stopped conceding goals, we're defending well. It's about trying to click further up the park and we're not quite there yet but working towards it.

On not taking advantage of Leeds going down to ten men: "That's the frustrating thing because 11v11 I thought we had some good chances to go ahead. We'll review it tomorrow, we'll see things that we didn't see on the park at the time. But we need to play with a lot more aggression, speed, create better chances because no matter who it is in this league if they go down to ten men they're still a threat."

  8. 'I saw a team fighting like lions'published at 19:03 British Summer Time 2 October 2022

FT: Leeds United 0-0 Aston Villa

    Leeds United

Speaking to Sky Sports, Leeds boss Jesse Marsch said: "I saw a team that was fighting like lions and doing everything they could to battle through and hold the clean sheet. Going down a man obviously makes it hard and maybe we could have pushed the game more if we stay even but the point shows the character of the group again.

"We need to be braver. We played a little too conservative, we had moments in the last third where we can show more poise and quality and we will continue to work on that.

"After the time off the group wanted the result so bad that we were a little nervy. Villa slowed the game down and that's two or three opponents we have had here that want to throw the ball away or take a minute on a goal kick so we need help with that.

"This is the best league in the world and our fans don't come here to watch a match at snails pace."

On what he told his players at half-time: "I said we know what the tactic is and we are going to stay focused on what need, but then everything changes when we go a man down. We worked on man down tactics over the last four weeks which helped us. Maybe a better strategy will be to work on man up. Luis, already on a yellow should know that because he puts himself in jeopardy so that was not an intelligent play."

  9. 'We'll look back on it as a good point'published at 18:57 British Summer Time 2 October 2022

FT: Leeds United 0-0 Aston Villa

    Aston Villa

Speaking to Sky Sports, Aston Villa's Ashley Young said: "When you play against 10 men and create the chances we do and can't score, it does feel like a disappointment not claiming all three points. But when you come to a place like this and walk away with a point it's a good point.

"I think we had 12 entries into the box and 19 shots but that's the disappointment. It's hostile here and walking away with a point, we'll look back on it as a good point.

"Everyone thinks it's easy when a team goes down to 10 men but we created chances and couldn't get the ball in the back if the net."

  10. Postpublished at 18:55 British Summer Time 2 October 2022

FT: Leeds United 0-0 Aston Villa

    Leeds United

Leeds United manager Jesse Marsch speaking to MOTD: "Obviously going a man down wasn't ideal. We worked on some 'man down' tactics in the time we had in the last four weeks and I think it was valuable.

"We started with four at the back and felt we were maybe giving away too much at the back post and on the wide spaces so switched to a 5-3-1. I thought the team were pretty clear with what we wanted in the match and then we fought like hell.

"What we know about our team, our club, is that we fight like lions. Even when our backs our down we'll give everything we have and you saw that mentality today.

"In the first half I think if we're a little more assertive in the match then we can find a way to maybe take a lead in the match. But overall it's a good clean sheet and a good result."

  11. 'The boys dug in'published at 18:48 British Summer Time 2 October 2022

FT: Leeds United 0-0 Aston Villa

    Leeds United

Leeds defender Liam Cooper told Sky Sports: "The sending off changed the game. When the referee gives a booking so early, it sets the standard of what is a booking.

"It was stop-start but it was about managing that and not getting beaten so the boys can be proud of a good shift. We train with a man down so that came in useful today. We obviously didn't have as much possession as we'd like with 10 men but the boys dug in."

  12. 'We deserved a point'published at 18:41 British Summer Time 2 October 2022

FT: Leeds United 0-0 Aston Villa

    Leeds United

Speaking to Sky Sports, Leeds forward Patrick Bamford said: "Circumstances made it a bit more difficult. The boys on the pitch the whole game were outstanding and we deserved a point. Villa had a game plan and part of that was slowing down our momentum.

"That worked to a point and then the tables turned in the second half and we had to do a bit of that ourselves. It was nice to be back on the pitch. You just want to play football, so hopefully I can now put some momentum together and start scoring some goals."

The game lacked quality. Both sides were poor in possession. Obviously Villa had the better second half after Leeds went down to 10 men, they created chances. Meslier made some important saves but Steven Gerrard will be disappointed with his team there. Maybe before the game he might have taken a point but not when you go down to 10 men, they didn't create enough chances. Leeds defended ever so well, credit must go to them.

A frantic, fully-committed bad-tempered match with both sides having chances to win it in the last few minutes.

Leeds would have gone into the top 10 with a win but they will settle for a very hard-earned point, while Steven Gerrard will see this as a good chance missed to return to the Midlands with a victory.

"You're not fit to referee" is the deafening chant at the end from all home sides of the ground as they give their verdict on Luis Sinisterra's controversial second yellow card for not retreating 10 yards for a free-kick that saw him sent off in the 48th minute.
