    Leeds United 0-0 Aston Villa

Leeds have to keep their heads now.

They're down a player and cannot afford to lose another. Liam Cooper blocks off Ezri Konsa and concedes the free-kick, but it's not enough for a booking.

  2. What an opportunity now for Villapublished at 17:45 British Summer Time 2 October 2022

The ups and downs of football. Luis Sinisterra had scored his first ever goal for Colombia in the international break in a 4-1 win over Guatemala and quickly followed that with two goals in a 3-2 victory against Mexico.

He has to leave the field after the most stupid of second bookings sees him sent off, sticking out a foot to block a free-kick when Douglas Luiz tried to take it quickly, although Luiz knew the player was so close to him and knew exactly what he was doing.

Manager Jesse Marsch, still in the media seats, has his head in his hands and what an opportunity for Aston Villa now to get the three points.

The ball in from Bailey is first class, the side foot volley from Coutinho is outstanding and it deserves a goal and Ollie Watkins just can't sort his feet out quickly enough and pokes it wide of the post. The technique from Coutinho is outstanding.

    Chance.

Phillipe Coutinho fires a guided volley at goal but it crashes into the woodwork. Ollie Watkins can't turn in the rebound and we remain level.

Luiz has been clever but Sinisterra lifts his leg up. Stuart Atwell makes the right decision. If Sinisterra doesn't lift his leg up, he doesn't get sent off.

  7. RED CARDpublished at 48 mins

    Leeds United 0-0 Aston Villa

It feels like a red card has been inevitable in this game and it's Luis Sinisterra.

He picked up a yellow in the first half for a clip on John McGinn's heels, but the second booking is needless.

He's cautioned for not retreating 10 yards and trying to block an Aston Villa free-kick.

Ian: Villa can’t and won’t improve under Gerrard. Unfortunately it’s time for Purslow to do the decent thing and let Stevie G go and get a better manager in.

Leeds were the better team for the first 25 minutes and it seemed like Villa were coming to play for the draw. They got their big players, Coutinho, Ramsey and Watkins into the game in the last 10 minutes. 0-0 is the right score line at half-time. The quality has been lacking in the final third.

  12. Both sides will fancy the three pointspublished at 17:26 British Summer Time 2 October 2022

Leeds' Illan Meslier has been the busier of the two goalkeepers - saving from Ollie Watkins and Philippe Coutinho before Villa's best move of the match came right at the end of the first half.

Douglas Luiz, who continues to be linked with a move to Arsenal after Villa turned down a bid from the Gunners for him at the end of the last transfer window, played it wide right to Jacob Ramsey, he found Leon Bailey and his powerful strike from just inside the penalty area was well held by Meslier.

Ramsey and Bailey linked up for Villa's goal in last month's 1-1 draw against Manchester City but they couldn't repeat the trick here.

Leeds have been fully committed and twice got into good positions down the wing with the crosses unable to be converted and Emiliano Martinez has not had a save to make.

Both sides will fancy collecting the three points today but it's all square and goalless at the break. A moment of magic or mistake could well prove to be the difference.

  13. HALF-TIME - Leeds United 0-0 Aston Villapublished at 17:24 British Summer Time 2 October 2022

That's all for the first half.

It's been pulsating without many clear chances. Will we see the deadlock broken after the break?

Villa have had to shuffle the deck.

Jan Bednarek replaces Ludwig Augustinsson and moves to centre-back, while Ashley Young moves into left-back and Ezri Konsa moves to right-back.

    Not what Villa need.

With Lucas Digne and Matty Cash already out, this is a worry for the visitors as debutant Ludwig Augustinsson receives treatment.

The full-back looks like he may have a hamstring issue.

Villa haven't seen a lot of the ball but Leon Bailey slides it through to Ollie Watkins and they're in.

The Villa forward opts for power but Illan Meslier is off his line quickly and produces the save.

    Chance for the visitors.

The challenges are flying in from both sides with four in the book already - three from Leeds and one from Villa and it would not be a surprise to see someone get a red later on today.

Low on quality, high on intensity, passion and commitment. Both sides are going to have fight hard to get anything from this one.
