  1. De Zerbi showing 'the perfect stance'published at 19:14 British Summer Time 18 October 2022

Brighton v Nottingham Forest (19:30 BST)

    Steve Sidwell
Former Chelsea midfielder on BBC Radio 5 Live

Roberto de Zerbi has a come into a culture and environment where things are great.

It's not like he's come into a place that needs fixing.

Yes, players are going to have to adapt to his very subtle changes but we know that he likes to play expansive football just like Graham Potter did.

I think small, little changes, is the perfect stance from De Zerbi.

Crystal Palace v Wolves (20:15 BST)

Wolves can equal a club record of going five successive top-flight away matches without scoring. They have done this on three occasions, most recently from September to October 1981.

They scored after six minutes of their opening away game this season - at Leeds - but have since gone 444 minutes without a goal on the road, despite having 73 shots.

Wolves finally managed to get back to winning ways and it was a huge relief for the club and a real weight off the shoulders for players and fans.

Although they still aren’t in a fantastic position, we hope that this can now kickstart the season. It wasn’t a perfect performance but caretaker bosses Steve Davis and James Collins injected the required grit and determination into the squad.

Even the returning Morgan Gibbs-White couldn’t ruin the afternoon. The former Wolves midfielder was jeered for the majority of the game so who knows if that affected his performance.

A win against Crystal Palace midweek would be massive too. Not only would the club shoot up the Premier League but it could buy the board more time to pick out a new head coach.

That picture still isn’t any clearer but some more breathing space between Wolves and the drop zone will ease the pressure to make a snap decision.

Wolves have spoken to former Ajax and Borussia Dortmund boss Peter Bosz about their vacant manager's job.

Chairman Jeff Shi is continuing to assess suitable candidates to replace Bruno Lage, who was sacked on 2 October.

Bosz was recently dismissed by French club Lyon but the 58-year-old is still highly regarded across Europe.

Shi missed out on his first choice Julen Lopetegui, who wants to remain in Spain after being sacked by Sevilla.

It is not out of the question current interim bosses Steve Davis and James Collins could remain in charge until the Premier League breaks for the World Cup in the middle of November.

Much, though, may depend on the result of tonight's game.

Wolves interim boss Steve Davis says he is "privileged" to be taking charge of the club he supports.

Following the sacking of Bruno Lage, the Wolves under-18s coach has teamed up with fellow coach James Collins to lead the side and they masterminded a vital win over Nottingham Forest on Saturday.

Speaking in the middle of a three-game week, Davis admits he has not even considered being in the running for the job on a permanent basis.

"I know I'm privileged to be at this club," he said. "It's a great club and I love it.

"I would drive a bus here if they asked me to do it. If the chairman came to me tomorrow and said I was the next kit man, I'd do it. I really don't mind.

"Myself and James feel grateful we've been trusted to take the reins in a difficult period. We all want to turn things round - everyone is working hard and the win has given everyone a boost."

Brighton fans watching the 2-0 defeat at Brentford on Friday were left feeling the Albion were back in 2020-21 season.

That campaign, under Graham Potter, was an xG nightmare. The Albion dominated and had lots of shots, but struggled to score. It was the same story at the Gtech Stadium: 73% possession, 21 shots, seven on target, zero goals, zero points.

It took Potter the best part of two and a half years to get Brighton’s return on the scoreboard matching what they did elsewhere on the pitch. Patience is something Tony Bloom has in abundance - and that's just as well, because Roberto de Zerbi is going to need time.

He is attempting to change the club’s style of play in the middle of a hectic campaign while rebuilding a coaching team gutted by Potter taking six members of staff to Chelsea with him.

It is quite the task, the scale of which is being realised following that breathless 3-3 draw at Liverpool in De Zerbi’s first game in charge. The fixture list is not kind either, with games against Manchester City and Chelsea to come.

It feels like the Albion need to make it through to the World Cup break, when De Zerbi will have four solid weeks to work with his players on new ideas.

Nottingham Forest's social media team will be watching their step today I suspect.

Forest put out a picture of striker Emmanuel Dennis on the Molineux pitch surrounded by wolf cubs with the caption "playtime" before Saturday's game with Wolves.

They lost 1-0 - and it had been discussed by Wolves' players before the game.

"It wasn't a good thing from the club and it wasn't helpful," said Forest boss Steve Cooper.

"But it's been dealt with. The important thing is about learning from it."

Last week's talking point spoke of potential "bumps in the road" for Patrick Vieira as the season progresses, and this match against Leicester City did prove to be one.

Facing a team with the worst defensive record in the league, with goalkeeper Danny Ward one of the poorest performers in the Premier League and boasting a save percentage below 50%, Palace converted their possession into a single shot on target.

The team's attacking style often relies on individual brilliance to generate chances rather than a systematic approach, but when the finesse of a Wilfried Zaha or Eberechi Eze does fail, the team is struggling for a pragmatic 'plan B'.

This dilemma is one of the challenges the head coach faces. Despite being a student of modern football, he could borrow from Palace's tactical past to steal victories but lacks the appropriate ammunition. There is no longer a target man to call upon to spearhead a direct approach with a barrage of crosses and there are a lack of physical options to impose in the midfield battle.

In isolation, we can respect the point gained on Saturday - but the nature of fans is always to desire more.

Brighton v Nottingham Forest (19:30 BST)

Forest have lost seven of their opening 10 top-flight fixtures in a season for the first time since 1904.

Their record of one win, two draws and seven defeats is the club's worst after 10 matches of a top-flight campaign.

This is only the second occasion they have conceded 23 (or more) goals after 10 top-flight games, previously doing so in 1905.

This is Brighton's 200th Premier League fixture, and 100th at Amex Stadium.

They have won 52 of their first 199.

A win today would take them onto 17 points - their best total after 10 top-flight games (including the old First Division).

Crystal Palace did OK in their draw with Leicester but I don't think Patrick Vieira's side have hit the heights that he was probably expecting from them this season.

Some of the Eagles' performances have been quite bitty, which means they don't do enough to win games.

As for Wolves, well I say the same thing every week about their lack of goals.

They got the win at the weekend, by holding Forest off, but their caretaker boss Steve Davis got a big break when Brennan Johnson's penalty was saved.

    Sutton's prediction: 1-1

It ended 1-1 at Brighton's old Goldstone Ground.

Their last meetings were in the 2016-17 Championship. Both games were won 3-0 by the team at home.

Brighton were unlucky to be beaten by Brentford on Friday. They played well and had opportunities, but they weren't ruthless enough.

That defeat meant new Seagulls boss Roberto de Zerbi has taken only one point from his first three games, but his wait for a first win should end here.

Forest don't just seem disjointed, they look like they are losing confidence and belief. Last season, they were always very well organised but also went after teams - they are not doing either at the moment.

Even when they do get opportunities, like their missed penalty in Saturday's defeat by Wolves, they don't seem able to take them. That summed up where they are at the moment.

Somehow, Forest boss Steve Cooper has got to stumble across a result and find something that works for him, to find a framework for his team again.

I'm afraid I don't see that happening against Brighton. I'm not writing Forest off, but it looks like it is going to be a very long season for them.

    Sutton's prediction: 2-0

Brighton are yet to win since Roberto de Zerbi replaced Chelsea-bound Graham Potter.

But they have showed some promising signs, just failing to take chances.

The Italian is the first Brighton manager to fail to win in his first three league games in charge since Barry Lloyd in February 1987. Lloyd had to wait 13 matches for his first victory.
