You have to say that new stand at Fulham is magnificent.

The lights on the futuristic Riverside Stand glimmer like a constellation in the sky as the television camera pans outs, with the reflection flickering off the gentle tide of the Thames.

The perfect setting for a 21st Century version of Lowry's Going to the Match.

We can assume Steven Gerrard is not easily rattled. The highlights of his playing career often involved him leading his team out of adverse situations, sometimes in hostile environments, as he held his nerve amid heightened tension.

Gerrard said after Sunday’s defeat by Chelsea that he heard the boos and accepts the criticism. He is used to tests of nerve and will face up to it.

But if there are many more negative results - and the games against Fulham and Brentford now look particularly important - the real test of nerve may be taking place in the boardroom.

Steven Gerrard says he hopes to “fight and lead” Aston Villa through a difficult period and insists there is “no one on the planet” more determined to do so.

The Villa boss has overseen a worrying run of one win in seven league games, leaving his side 16th in the Premier League.

Asked if he is drawing on the character he showed as a player in testing times, the former England midfielder said: “I’ve had tough days. But tough days are OK because you need to use them as motivation for when better days come.

"I’m a young manager, I take that and this is a tough period. But it’s a great challenge for me from a personal point of view.

“I want to prove to everyone I can change our situation. I’m here to fight and lead every single minute of every day and I have confidence in my ability to change the situation. I am game for these periods as I believe and know I can get through them.”

A little earlier we told you Ashley Young was making his 400th Premier League appearance and that he is the second oldest player to reach this landmark (see 18:29 entry).

We asked if you knew the first... it was, of course, Teddy Sheringham!

  11. Davis to remain in charge of Wolvespublished at 19:10 British Summer Time 20 October 2022

Manager chat has already been a hot topic tonight and here is some more from elsewhere in the West Midlands.

Wolves are still searching for Bruno Lage's full-time replacement and have decided to keep caretaker manager Steve Davis in place until 2023 after Michael Beale rejected the job.

Davis has been in charge for three games since Lage was sacked on 2 October.

QPR boss Beale was offered the chance to replace Lage after Julen Lopetegui also said no to the job.

  12. Ronaldo dropped from Man Utd squad for Chelseapublished at 19:06 British Summer Time 20 October 2022

The big news concerns Cristiano Ronaldo.

After storming off before the end of last night's win against Spurs, the Portuguese superstar will not be part of Manchester United's squad for Saturday's game at Chelsea.

Ronaldo, 37, was an unused substitute and, moments after Erik ten Hag brought on Christian Eriksen and Anthony Elanga, he decided he had had enough.

Ten Hag said last night he would "deal with it" today - and that's what he has done.

"The rest of the squad is fully focused on preparing for that fixture," a club statement said.

Marc: On paper that's a pretty good Villa team. Gerrard needs a win tonight but glad to see he's dropped Coutinho. Shame he hasn't done the same with Mings... and what does Buendia need to do to get a start?

Things are much further down the track at the Cottage.

Both sets of players are warming up - knees up, speed ladders, etc - on the pitch as punters wander down Stevenage Road.

  16. 'Some scoring wouldn't be so bad!'published at 18:55 British Summer Time 20 October 2022

    Leicester v Leeds (20:15 BST)

Leeds defender Rasmus Kristensen has stopped for a quick interview on the way into the King Power, discussing the task which lies ahead tonight.

"It is a big challenge, a tough away game, Leicester are a better team than results show," said the Denmark international.

"Hopefully we need to repeat everything we did against Arsenal and maybe some scoring - that wouldn't be so bad!

"We have a gameplan and need to go out and follow it.

"There is always pressure, it is a tough league and you've got to make every point count."

The Leeds team bus has turned up at the King Power, with most of the expected faces there as the players troop into the stadium.

A few pensive expressions among them.

It is also a huge game for Leeds, who have not won in six matches.

  18. Latest from north London...published at 18:42 British Summer Time 20 October 2022

One game is already under way tonight.

Arsenal are playing PSV Eindhoven in the Uefa Europa League, a match which was postponed last month because of "severe limitations on police resources" following the death of Queen Elizabeth II.

The Gunners need a point to qualify for the next phase and are currently on course to do exactly that.

Follow all the action (not that there has been too much to shout about) here.
