    Liverpool

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp to Amazon Prime: "It was a top performance in a difficult game. I think we played exceptionally in the first half.

"Villa had their moments but we were really good. I liked what I saw. We told the boys at half-time where we could do better and the only problem was in the second half we missed the last step all of a sudden.

"Villa were pushing hard, in a home game that's normal, we knew that would happen, and you have to get through those periods. We could have scored the third goal much earlier but it's fine, and I loved the situation around the third goal."

On Stefan Bajcetic: "He's cheeky as hell and is not worried about anything. He just plays football and he can do that exceptionally well. He had a football-playing father (Srdan Bajcetic) so the genes are there but also the attitude, awareness and match intelligence. It's a big pleasure to work with these boys."

Liverpool left-back Andy Robertson: "It was almost perfect. Away from home, we've not been good enough. We had a big result at Tottenham before the break and it was important for us to back it up. It was an important three points for us.

"The first half couldn't have have gone much better for us. We knew they were going to react, be more positive and get after us. They made it tough [in the second half], we conceded a goal and sometimes you have to dig deep. Today we showed a different side to us where we dug in and then we hurt them on the counter-attack."

On his 54th Premier League assist, a new record for a defender: "We started well, I put a ball across for Darwin [Nunez] and we got a corner. Then Trent [Alexander-Arnold] played an unbelievable ball to me and I saw Mo [Salah] at the far post.

"Full-backs are evolving, it's about going forward as well as defending. I want to defend, first and foremost, but going forward is a big part of your game too.

"I knew I equalled the record with two [assists] before the break and I was focused on trying to get back and beating it. I'm not into individual things but when you do stuff like that against some unbelievable defenders in the Premier League, it's good to put yourselves at the top like that."

Arsenal could equal a club record by winning their first seven Premier League home games in a season. They are on a run of nine straight home league victories dating back to last season.

The Gunners have won 10 Boxing Day home fixtures in a row and are unbeaten in 13 since losing to Nottingham Forest in 1987.

Arsenal are five points clear at the the top of the table [before Newcastle's win at Leicester] but we are going to find out in the next few weeks whether they really are title contenders, aren't we?

The break probably came at the worst possible time for them, because of the form they were in, and there isn't a more significant player they could have lost to injury than Gabriel Jesus.

People might point at his lack of goals before the World Cup but Jesus is integral to them in the way they press, and with his link-up play.

He is irreplaceable, certainly from within their squad, so the seriousness of his injury will probably decide whether they try to make some signings in January.

I feel like I have backed West Ham to be better than they have been on plenty of occasions already this season, but the one thing they should be here is tough to beat.

    Sutton's prediction: 1-1

  10. 'Happy days'published at 19:50 Greenwich Mean Time 26 December 2022

    Aston Villa 1-3 Liverpool

Former Liverpool striker John Aldridge is happy with that result. The Reds were unbeaten in four appearances against Villa with Aldridge in their side between the 1986-87 and 1989-90 seasons.

Aldridge also scored once in both legs of Tranmere's EFL Cup semi-final against Villa in 1994, adding another in Rovers' penalty shootout defeat to the team who became champions.

Maybe not the best performance but a big win for Liverpool and a statement to the rest of the league. We are not finished yet! Give it time.

West Ham are only one point above the relegation zone.

The Hammers are in danger of losing four consecutive Premier League games in a season for the first time since the start of the 2018-19 campaign.

Eleven away league defeats in 2022 is their most in a calendar year since losing 12 in 2013.

Defeat would leave them with 10 defeats from their first 16 Premier League games for the first time since the 2006-07 campaign.

To everyone who is criticising Darwin Nunez - he works his socks off, makes great runs and worries defenders, plus he scores in nearly every other game. He's also only 23 and has plenty of time to improve his finishing.

    Keith

I feel like this isn't going to work out with Emery. The team needs to focus its play through Watkins. He is our best player (has been for years) and the best striker on the pitch tonight. Hopefully, the manager learns and adapts his tactics.

The lads have been working hard and it's up to us now to put things right. We know we haven't had a great start to the season.

"Most obviously, we've not been scoring enough goals. It has been a disappointing season for us but there is an opportunity for us today and to put it right.

Arsenal are top of the table at Christmas for the first time since 2007. However, they failed to win the title on each of the last five occasions that happened.

The only team to have a lead of at least five points on Christmas Day and not go on to win the Premier League title was Newcastle United in 1995-96.

However this is the Premier League season with fewest games played by Christmas.
