What an amazing game for supporters. It felt like a game of ping pong – back and forth, momentum shifted. Liverpool got chances and then it was Chelsea, and in the end it was 2-1 Liverpool.

    Liverpool

Liverpool's Katie Stengel speaking to Sky Sports: "I think he's [Matt Beard] just reiterated that we had to believe in ourselves. We can win this game and it's just another team out there. Another 11 players and we prepared our pre-season so why not believe ourselves.

"I told myself 'don't miss'. Please 'don't miss!' All these people here will make fun of me if I miss so I was like I had to change it up and I got lucky I guess.

"When I step up for a penalty I decide what I’m going to do before I step up to take it. Take a breath. If the keeper moves early, then I adjust. Otherwise, I stick with what I decided to do. I am looking forward to the derby, we get to play at Anfield. It’s a dream come true so we are very excited and make sure the city is red."

  6. Hayes: "I don't think we could hit a barn door"published at 19:28 British Summer Time 18 September 2022

    FT: Liverpool 2-1 Chelsea

    Chelsea

Chelsea manager Emma Hayes speaking to Sky Sports: "We've conceded two penalties but I thought going forwards we weren't good enough. Even at the end, the crosses into the box, nothing went where it was supposed to go. We're disappointed but we go [again].

"At 1-0 I think for us it's about making sure you're set up so that your transition to defend is good enough.

"They scored from a throw-in which was a penalty and a transition which was another penalty. It's not like in open play they've had lots of shots; they've just maximised the situations and for us going forwards I don't think we could hit a barn door today.

"Sometimes we always want to win things by bigger margins rather than follow the process, keep passing the football. I thought in the second half it got a little stretched for us. I've been here before and we just chalk it off and go again."

    Liverpool

Matt Beard on playing at Anfield: "We are looking forward to it; it'll be a great occasion. Playing Everton, it is the first fixture as a Liverpool manager you look for. Getting back into the WSL and having that fixture again is fantastic.

"We are looking forward to the occasion, but we've got to play the game and not the occasion."

  8. 'We deserved to win'published at 19:20 British Summer Time 18 September 2022

    FT: Liverpool 2-1 Chelsea

    Liverpool

Liverpool boss Matt Beard speaking to Sky Sports: "It is just the first game. Over the course of it, we deserved to win. Especially with the tactical changes we made at half time. It is great that we've started with three points at home; this was a fortress for us last year and we made it uncomfortable and difficult for Chelsea today.

"Over pre-season, we tested ourselves against good WSL sides and we started slowly in terms of not stepping out when we can and putting them under pressure. It took a little time. Chelsea like to play through and then round so we stopped that happening, and we knew we could hurt them on the counter-attack. Luckily for us it paid off."

Chelsea will be so disappointed. That Kadeisha Buchanan penalty, that’s really tricky, for me that’s not a penalty, it’s just great defending.

Chelsea will just have to take this on the chin. It’s going to be a long season for them, they’ll pick themselves back up.
