Alisha Lehmann opened the scoring before Rachel Daly added an excellent second.

Villa looked like they were heading for the break with a two-goal cushion, but Hannah Hampton's failure to keep Coombs' shot out gives City hope and leaves the game delicately poised.

Better from City as Laura Coombs' looping cross finds Khadija Shaw, but the Jamaican's header lacks the power necessary to trouble Hannah Hampton.

Lauren Hemp drives towards the byline but overruns the ball and Villa can reset.

Steph Houghton is an honest player. She didn't play enough minutes last season to warrant a place in the Lionesses squad. She knows it herself and was heart-breaking as it was, but she did everything she could to be there.

She will be excited to be back with this Man City team and leading them again. We've already seen her qualities within this game. The quality is still there.

Villa are pressing well and stopping City from playing through the lines.

Impressive organisation from the hosts in the opening quarter of an hour. They look sharp and well up for this.

Mayumi Pacheco again makes good progress down the left but can't find a team-mate with her cross.
