  1. 'I think now the full squad believes we can compete'published at 17:56 British Summer Time 2 September 2022

    Greece v Wales (18:00 BST)

Wales captain Sophie Ingle says her side should be comfortable with being labelled as favourites tonight.

Wales hammered Greece 5-0 in the reverse fixture with Ingle on the scoresheet, but she expects a tougher test tonight.

"I would say that we are the favourites, we shouldn't be afraid to think like that, but we know it will be very tough," Ingle said.

"We will probably see plenty of the ball and we need to embrace that."

Ingle has been part of failed campaigns in the past, but feels the squad has grown and improved and are ready to take the next step.

"There's a lot of elements that come into play, with mentality probably being the main one," she added.

"When we've fallen short in the past we've been a bit naive maybe.

"We were obviously younger and not so experienced, but now it's about believing that we can do it.

"In the past we said we believed [that they could qualify], but did we really as a whole?

"I think now the full squad believes we can compete against the top teams."

Manager Gemma Grainger believes inspiring the country is what gives Wales motivation going into their final two World Cup qualifiers.

They face Greece away tonight followed by Slovenia in Cardiff the following Tuesday - in front of what will be a record crowd - knowing four points will be enough to clinch second place in the group and secure a spot in the play-offs for the first time.

  5. Wales set for 10,000+ record crowdpublished at 17:49 British Summer Time 2 September 2022

    Greece v Wales (18:00 BST)

Although tonight is all about the result in Greece, for Tuesday's game at Cardiff City Stadium against Slovenia, Wales will be backed by a record crowd. The Football Association of Wales (FAW) says there has been a "surge in ticket sales on the back of a record-breaking Euro 2022 tournament".

More than 9,500 tickets have been sold, with the FAW hoping the Slovenia match will be watched by Wales women's first five-figure crowd.

"To play in front of so many people is really special. It is an important time for us to capitalise on the growth of the game," Wales manager Gemma Grainger said.

"We are excited to play against Slovenia and we think a big crowd will get us a big competitive advantage.

"The success of the Euros has given us a bigger stage to show what we are doing.

"The Euros gave the game more visibility. Hopefully that leads to more investment and higher accessibility."

  7. James' happiness is boost for Walespublished at 17:44 British Summer Time 2 September 2022

    Greece v Wales (18:00 BST)

Wales boss Gemma Grainger has welcomed the "happiness" of midfielder Angharad James on returning to the UK after her short spell in America's NWSL.

The 28-year-old signed a two-year deal at Tottenham in July after mutually ending her contract with Orlando Pride.

James could reach 100 international caps after playing against Greece and Slovenia in Wales' final two World Cup qualifiers this month.

"One of the most important things for her was to be happy," said Grainger.

"In the last 12 months she has played in the two best leagues and Tottenham have a real good signing.

"For her to be happy, to be settled and to be playing week in week out, is the number one thing... and to be playing in the WSL [Women's Super League], one of the best leagues in the world.

"For Angharad, it was about finding the right blend of where she lived and, living in America, it wasn't necessarily that it was too far away from home, it was about the right thing for her from a football perspective."

There's no two for one drinks vouchers, but the security, media and the few hundred fans arriving are enjoying it.

A balmy 27 degrees here in Volos, it feels very close, and the pitch is having a good pre-match water.

  10. Team news - Fishlock on bench for Walespublished at 17:34 British Summer Time 2 September 2022

  11. Good eveningpublished at 17:30 British Summer Time 2 September 2022

    Greece v Wales (18:00 BST)

    Hello and welcome,

Tonight is another big night for Wales, who need to keep their fate in Group I in their own hands by ensuring they are not beaten in Greece.

However, a win would give them a huge boost in their bid to reach the World Cup play-offs, as it would mean they head into their final qualifier at home to Slovenia next Tuesday needing just a point.

    First things first, however.

Tonight they need to overcome the heat, conditions and home crowd, all favouring a Greece side who still have a mathematical chance of qualification.

But Wales have looked so composed throughout this campaign, and they will certainly start as big favourites.

The stage is nicely set. Let's have a look at those teams.
