    FT: Ajax 4-0 Rangers

Well, Rangers' long-awaited return to the Champions League was rather painful.

Ajax bossed the first-half with their pace and slick passing, before taking their foot off the gas.

Rangers will need a big improvement at home to Napoli next week.

  3. Rangers boss laments 'gifted goals'published at 20:45 British Summer Time 7 September 2022

    FT: Ajax 4-0 Rangers

A little bit more from Rangers manager Giovanni van Bronckhorst, addressing the problem issue of defending corners.

"We have tall players in the zones. The smallest player on the pitch blocked one of our players. It's about having the desire to do everything you can to win your duels. Gifting a goal like [the first one] is very damaging.

"Eight goals in two games is too much for Rangers - that can never happen. The opponent can be strong, you can lose a game, but not the way we gifted the goals.

"Sometimes in football, you taste victory and success, and sometimes you taste defeat and feel low. When I have those moments in my career, as a player and as a coach, those are the moments I wanted to fight even more. That's what I expect from my players as well."

  4. 'Too much to ask'published at 20:39 British Summer Time 7 September 2022

    FT: Ajax 4-0 Rangers

When quizzed on BT Sport if he felt he had been backed enough to compete at this level, Giovanni van Bronckhorst added: "To compete in the Champions League you need hundred of millions, otherwise you can't compete.

"If you look at all the squads we’re facing now, look at Ajax they sold [players this summer] for over 200 million, Liverpool as well.

"For us to compete with them, for us it’s too much to ask. We want to compete but we want to compete with the squad we have and the squad we are able and capable in making.

"We knew it was going to be tough and it showed today."

  5. 'Tavernier struggling a little with fitness'published at 20:36 British Summer Time 7 September 2022

    FT: Ajax 4-0 Rangers

On James Tavernier's half-time withdrawal, Giovanni van Bronckhorst told BT Sport: "Tav had already a knock a couple of weeks ago and he’s struggling a little bit with his fitness.

"I think it was good for him to change him because we could put Leon [King] in and you could see him struggling also in the first half."

  6. Napoli double lead over Liverpoolpublished at 20:34 British Summer Time 7 September 2022

Liverpool are in trouble over in Naples, with Zambo Anguissa making it 2-0.

That was after the Serie A side scored an early penalty and had another spot-kick saved.

Napoli come to Ibrox in Group A next Tuesday.

  7. 'Every mistake we made on the pitch was punished'published at 20:31 British Summer Time 7 September 2022

    FT: Ajax 4-0 Rangers

Rangers manager Giovanni van Bronckhorst tells BT Sport: “Very disappointed. We knew the Champions League would be a high level, I think the level we faced today showed how good they are, how strong they are.

"You have to be 100% to be ready for the game. You saw everything goes quicker in Champions League, the pressure we got, the thinking on the ball, the ball control, the speed of the ball from a really high level. In the first half especially we couldn't reach that level and struggled. Every mistake we made on the pitch gets punished by an opponent like Ajax.

“It's difficult. You don't want to give space away against Ajax. I think we gave less away in the second half because we played a little more defensively. I think the first half we went too quickly with our opponents who drag players away to make space, in those moments we should have stuck more in our zones which we didn't do well.

“Of course the performance wasn’t good enough. I think the players are committed and want to play the way we want. They want to fight, they want to work hard but, you know, against an opponent like Ajax it’s going to be really tough.

“The level we are used to and the level we have to reach in Champions League is a big difference."

  8. King can be proud of performancepublished at 20:24 British Summer Time 7 September 2022

    FT: Ajax 4-0 Rangers

It was a bleak evening for Rangers but a chink of light amid the gloom was the second-half performance of Leon King. The 18-year-old defender was solid throughout after replacing captain James Tavernier.

Borna Barisic also put in a shift, stopping a certain goal with a tackle on Mohammed Kudus and firing in a brilliant strike that was ruled out for an earlier offside.

For Pittodrie, is it time to chuck Morelos back in? Colak tonight was poor. If you're trying to get Morelos fit, and you know how important he can be, get him in the team. If he only lasts 60 minutes, fine. Other than that, you're left scratching your head a wee bit for who comes in.

  10. 'We’ll fight our way through it'published at 20:16 British Summer Time 7 September 2022

    FT: Ajax 4-0 Rangers

Rangers midfielder Ryan Jack tells BT Sport: “Obviously, everyone is disappointed and rightly so. All we can do is pick ourselves up, pick the bones out of the game. We have a massive game coming on Saturday away to Aberdeen and we know how tough a venue that will be. It’s important we pick ourselves up, learn quickly, and put it right on Saturday.

“When you lose two 4-0s on the bounce it does affect you personally, individually, and collectively. That's for us in the changing room to stick together, the staff as well and we’ll fight our way through it. We’ve let a lot of people down tonight, we apologise to the fans who sacrificed to make this trip to come and support us.

"Obviously, I give away the fourth goal and I take responsibility for that. It’s a blind pass. I'll be working hard as I can to make sure come the weekend I'm ready to go."

  11. 'Weird feeling' for Basseypublished at 20:13 British Summer Time 7 September 2022

    FT: Ajax 4-0 Rangers

"I'm buzzing, but it's a weird feeling," Ajax defender Calvin Bassey tells BT Sport after a comfortable night against his old team.

"When I'm not playing against the boys I'm rooting for them and wanting them to win, but on the pitch you have to switch that focus and I'm pleased to get the win.

"It wasn't easy for us we just executed at the right times. There's still work that can be done for us to get better and we’re pleased with the performance."

I don't actually know how good Ajax are, and we wont properly know until they play Liverpool next. There was a big, perhaps very big, element of Rangers making them look good. They were so passive and made so many mistakes.

On Saturday, they have a lunchtime date against Aberdeen at Pittodrie and then Napoli come to Ibrox on Tuesday.

This is seven of the team that took Rangers to the Europa League final. I don't think there's the same energy or belief in the team to go and compete at this level. It was there in the PSV game but there's something missing. You look at the running stats, you need to outrun teams.

It was a dreadful performance. The players were outplayed and out-thought, the manager was poor, and Ross Wilson has to take a chunk of blame for the recruitment. They are a worse team now than they were last season. Defensively not good enough, the midfield a non-entity, and offensively not at the races.

You've got to offer more than that in the Champions League. I thought it was poor in every department. By the time Rangers went to five at the back, it was too little, too late.
