As we have mentioned, a point or better tonight and Wales will have a booked a place in the play-offs for major tournament qualification for the first time.

So what comes next if they get a positive result? It is not simple, but let's try to explain.

Wales would join the eight other second-placed teams in the European qualifying groups in the play-offs.

The best three runners-up qualify directly for the second round of matches, with Wales not expected to be among that trio.

So if Gemma Grainger's team get the point they need, they are set to be in Friday morning’s draw for the first round of play-off matches alongside five other teams.

The three single-leg ties drawn out will be played on 6 October, with the winners drawn into three ties against the best three runners-up for the second-round matches, which will take place on 11 October.

Stick with us, there is more.

The three winners of those ties will then be ranked, with results in their respective groups and second-round play-off matches taken into account.

The two highest-placed winners qualify for the World Cup, with the other one advancing to the inter-confederation play-offs, which take place next February in New Zealand.

Those play-offs will feature 10 teams divided into three groups, with three World Cup spots on offer.

Wales' football journey continues on BBC with new deal for women's games

Tonight's attendance says everything about the direction in which women's football is heading in Wales.

So this seems like a good time to mention the new deal announced today between the Football Association of Wales and BBC Cymru Wales which secures the rights to broadcast Wales' international women's football games for the next five years.

Wales' qualification games will be shown on the BBC until at least 2027.

That includes the remainder of this World Cup qualifying campaign and any possible play-off matches.

Angharad James has gone from last pick to one of the first names on Wales' team sheet.

There may be more celebrated stars in this Welsh team, but there is huge respect for the Tottenham midfielder within the dressing room.

"She's our unsung hero by a country mile," says Wales' most-capped footballer, Jess Fishlock.

You can read more about James on her special night here.

As for our little quiz, we have just given one answer away - Fishlock has 134 caps.

The other seven in the 100 club? Loren Dykes, Sophie Ingle, Helen Ward, Natasha Harding, Gareth Bale, Chris Gunter and Wayne Hennessey.

To an extent, personal milestones are irrelevant tonight as Wales attempt to achieve something special as a team.

But the ideal scenario for Gemma Grainger's team is that they land a positive result to mark midfielder Angharad James' 100th Wales cap and defender Rhiannon Roberts' 50th appearance for her country in style.

James will become the ninth Welsh footballer to reach a century of caps, though she is the youngest yet at the age of 28.

Can you name the previous eight? We'll tell you in a moment.

Wales v Slovenia: Wales excited by bumper Cardiff support

Not for the first time in recent memory, the record crowd for a home Wales women's international will be broken tonight.

    Really, we should say obliterated.

The previous highest attendance for a Wales game on their patch was 5,455, for the victory over Estonia on this ground 11 months ago.

Tonight's game could be watched by more than 12,000 fans, with Gemma Grainger saying the Welsh supporters can make a difference as they have for Rob Page's men's team.

Captain Sophie Ingle says the bumper Cardiff crowd can play their part in ensuring Wales get what they want.

  11. Wales' biggest game yetpublished at 19:09 British Summer Time 6 September 2022

    Wales v Slovenia (19:45 BST)

Let's not beat around the bush, this game is the biggest Wales have ever played.

Only once before have they gone into the final match of a qualifying campaign with the play-offs so close.

Last time, they went into the decisive game - against England in Newport - as underdogs and were duly beaten 3-0.

But tonight's story is different. Wales are two points and one place above the Slovenians in Group I, having drawn their away game against these opponents earlier in the campaign.

They begin as favourites to seal second place in the group - behind runaway leaders France - and secure a maiden play-off adventure.

"It's special, it's really special," said manager Gemma Grainger on the eve of this game.

Wales must hope she feels the same in a few hours' time.

  12. Team news - Slovenia make one changepublished at 19:06 British Summer Time 6 September 2022

    Wales v Slovenia (19:45 BST)

Like Wales, Slovenia were victorious on Friday night, beating Kazakhstan 2-0.

Coach Jarc Borut makes one change tonight to the side which started that game, with Sara Makovec - a goalscorer last time out - making way for Kaja Korosec.

Slovenia: Mersnik, Erzen, Golob, Agrez, Erman, Conc, Korosec, Kolbl, Rogan, Zver (capt), Prasnikar.

Subs: Galjot, Nemet, Gradisek, Rozmaric, Klopcic, Kustrin, Makovec, Krizaj, Milovic, Babnik, Vindisar.

  13. Team news - Wales unchangedpublished at 19:03 British Summer Time 6 September 2022

    Wales v Slovenia (19:45 BST)

Gemma Grainger keeps faith with the side which started Friday night's 1-0 victory in Greece, which means there is no starting place once again for Jess Fishlock.

The influential midfielder is carrying an unspecified knock, but has trained ahead of this game and may play some part from the bench.

Fishlock's absence means Carrie Jones, who scored her first international goal in Greece, starts again.

Wales: O'Sullivan, Roberts, Ladd, Evans, Rowe, Ingle (capt), James, Harding, Jones, Holland, K Green.

Subs: Clark, Middleton-Patel, Woodham, J Green, Ward, Fishlock, Hughes, Estcourt, Walters, Wynne, Filbey, Morgan.
