Manchester City have won their opening two matches in a Champions League campaign for only the fourth time in 12 appearances, after 2017, 2019 and 2020.

They are unbeaten in 21 Champions League home fixtures.

Erling Haaland's magnificent strike capped a dramatic Manchester City comeback and condemned former club Borussia Dortmund to a painful Champions League defeat at Etihad Stadium.

City struggled against a composed Dortmund, who took the lead when the outstanding Jude Bellingham glanced home Marco Reus' cross after 56 minutes.

Pep Guardiola's side toiled in search of inspiration and found the equaliser with 10 minutes left when defender John Stones fired a powerful shot past Dortmund keeper Alexander Meyer.

Inevitably, it was left to Haaland to produce a truly special moment four minutes later, showing outstanding athleticism to soar through the air and score from Joao Cancelo's cross.

Graham Potter began his Chelsea reign with a draw against RB Salzburg, leaving his side with an uphill task to qualify for the Champions League knockout stages.

In his competition debut, the former Brighton boss picked Raheem Sterling as an advanced wing-back but saw the gamble pay off when the forward curled into the bottom corner shortly after the break.

It was a much-improved performance from Chelsea's defeat by Dinamo Zagreb in their opening Group E game last week, which spelled the end for former manager Thomas Tuchel.

But Matthias Jaissle's well-drilled Austrian side got an equaliser on 75 minutes when Thiago Silva missed a tackle, allowing Noah Okafor to clip in Junior Adamu's low cross.

That goal highlighted the risks involved in Potter's positive approach, with Sterling and Marc Cucurella caught out of position. But the hosts could have earned victory when Reece James fired over from a free-kick and substitute Hakim Ziyech almost headed in at the back post.

Following AC Milan's earlier 3-1 win over Zagreb, Chelsea sit bottom of Group E after two games with the Serie A champions up next at Stamford Bridge on 5 October.

Ten-man Rangers fell to their third consecutive heavy defeat without scoring despite a more encouraging performance against Napoli on a dramatic night in the Champions League.

Matteo Politano's penalty and late strikes from Giacomo Raspadori and Tanguy Ndombele secured victory, but only after Allan McGregor twice denied Piotr Zielinski from the spot.

James Sands was sent off for conceding the first penalty and, though McGregor saved twice following a VAR check for encroachment, he did not deny Politano.

The Italian forward put the ball low into the corner beyond the reach of the 40-year-old Rangers keeper after Borna Barisic was penalised for handball.

Substitute Raspadori finished neatly with five minutes left to end the home side's challenge before Ndombele stroked another goal home in stoppage time against a tiring Rangers backline.

Victory means Napoli top Group A with maximum points after two games, with Rangers winless ahead of back-to-back meetings with Liverpool next.

Real Madrid needed two late goals to beat Leipzig as boss Carlo Ancelotti became the second manager to win 100 Champions League games.

Leipzig missed a host of good chances with Christopher Nkunku denied by Thibaut Courtois twice. Federico Valverde gave Real an 80th-minute lead from Vinicius Jr's pass.

And Marco Asensio scored an excellent first-time finish from the edge of the box from Toni Kroos' free-kick to seal the win for the European champions.

This is the first time they have won their opening two Champions League games since 2017-18.

Only Manchester United legend Alex Ferguson (102) has won more games in the tournament than Real boss Ancelotti.

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has apologised to Italian referee Daniele Orsato for his post-match outburst.

Guardiola was yellow carded for marching onto the field and complaining about a challenge on Phil Foden at the end of the game.

"I deserved it," he said. "I apologise to him."

Celtic "will get their rewards" if they keep playing as they did in the 1-1 Champions League draw with Shakhtar Donetsk, says manager Ange Postecoglou.

Erling Haaland has 26 Champions League goals. That equals Ruud van Nistelrooy's record for most goals scored in his first 30 games in the tournament...

Except this is only Haaland's 21st game.

However, all is not lost if you use that 1999-2000 campaign as an example.

Chelsea, with Gianluca Vialli in charge, drew 0-0 at home to AC Milan then lost 2-1 away to Hertha Berlin, but the Blues recovered to finish top of their group, before losing to Barcelona over two legs in the quarter-final.

Dortmund midfielder Jude Bellingham to BT Sport: "It was not one of those games where you can get on the ball and have loads of possession. We knew we'd spend the majority of the game without the ball.

"We were brilliant for 75 minutes but that's enough time for City to put you away.

"That's what great teams can do. You don't give them a sniff and out of nothing they score and tilt the game back in their favour."

On Erling Haaland: "That shows his quality. He's not always in the game, you give him half a sniff and he can make a goal.

"It's tough to see them [positives] now. I'm gutted. We were 15 or so minutes away but that's football against big teams.

"It's important we bounce back at the weekend in the derby [against Schalke]."

Manchester City

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola to BT Sport: "We are used to doing it [comebacks] lately. I don’t like it.

"We played in the wrong gear today. No aggression. We were passive. The moment we changed rhythm with Phil [Foden], Bernardo [Silva] and Julian [Alvarez], we changed our pace and scored two excellent goals.

"I'm pretty sure the way were playing in the first half John [Stones] wouldn't have had the courage to try it [his shot but we had the rhythm and momentum and we said OK it’s going to happen. It was exceptional. I’m so happy for him."

On Erling Haaland's goal: "What a goal. I remember a long time ago in Barcelona Johan Cruyff scored one quite similar against Atletico Madrid. It’s nice Erling emulated Johan Cruyff."

On Dortmund: "They are an exceptional team. We knew it. We weren’t good enough today. At the same time it’s always good to have that resilience - let’s go, let's go, let's go. Having Julian and Erling in the box, having that alternative, it works."

Chelsea

England forward Raheem Sterling operated in an unusual left-wing back role, which saw him often tight on the left flank, although he did score Chelsea's goal and was named player of the match.

Speaking to BT Sport, he said: "I think with how we played, the chances we created, we dominated. It's a bad result in the end but we played some good football at times. I took the chance but we have to finish the job off. It felt like we were in control, but one chance one goal for them. Under a new manager we will get better and keep progressing.

"I was playing in a slightly different role. He [Graham Potter] said play out wide so in time I will get better. I'm happy to play along the front line. He wanted me out wide running at the full-back.

"We have got a big game coming up next [in the Champions League - at home against AC Milan] and we need to get a win from that."

Manchester City

Manchester City defender John Stones to BT Sport on his goal: "I've been trying to take up those positions. The manager wants us in those areas for things like that, to control the counter attack, in good positions for balls coming outside box, picking up pieces. It's one of those things. I was getting a few shouts and decided to pull the trigger."

On the win: "It was difficult. We weren't at our best tonight. In the first half we made it difficult and didn’t play at the tempo we should have. We didn’t use the ball well, we made sloppy passes. At half-time we had stern words between each other."

Manchester City striker Erling Haaland to BT Sport: "In the end we showed what we are. This is what we are. This is how we have to play. I'm proud of the last 25 minutes.

"Nice cross [from Joao Cancelo]. It's a really important win."

On facing his old club: "It's good to see everyone."

On Dortmund defending so well against him: "They didn’t stop me… I scored. They played well. They were good. I was quite sure I was going to be followed the whole game because Edin [Dortmund boss Terzic] knows me very well. Dortmund were really good today. Three points is what matters."

On Erling Haaland's winning goal...

Any other player would've tried to strike it with their right foot on the volley, but Haaland's gone with the left foot. It’s hard to describe. He’s got to be at least eight foot in the air when he connects with the ball, it’s an amazing finish.

He’s gone with the correct foot obviously because it’s gone in the back of the net! He’s a left-footer and many times, you will do things in an unorthodox way with your good foot which makes it look really difficult, but you’re more comfortable because it's your good foot.

Chelsea

Chelsea manager Graham Potter, talking to BT Sport, says: "We're disappointed with the result. I thought the boys gave everything. We scored a good goal, but lost a bit in the second half but their goalkeeper has made some good saves.

"It is what it is, we have to dust ourselves down. Personality and application was good, we will get better. We got Raheem in one-on-one situations quite often and the goal was a good result of that.

"It's always irritating when you concede a goal. Overall the defensive performance was quite good, it's just the little details we will have to improve.

"It has not been easy for the boys, they have responded to us really well over the last few days and it's a point we will have to take and get better. The attitude has been fantastic, no complaints apart from the fact we have not taken three points."

Chelsea looked to get forward at every opportunity, but Marc Cucurella and Raheem Sterling were both caught upfield for Salzburg's equaliser.
