Wayne: A bit out there this but how about Sarina Wiegman as next England men's manager? What she has done for both the Dutch and English national teams has to put her in contention?

A great shout Wayne although I can't see Wiegman moving. I reckon the Lionesses have a much better chance of becoming world Champions in 2023 than the men do in 2022.

Luca: Get Tuchel in while he’s still available. He’s already shown he can come in at late notice and win the biggest prize with an underperforming squad. Southgate’s done well to take us as far as he has but a top tactician is needed to take us to the next level.

  3. 'Alexander-Arnold’s Qatar spot uncertain'published at 12:07 British Summer Time 26 September 2022

    Alex Howell
    BBC Sport

The omission of Trent Alexander-Arnold shows where he is in the England right-back pecking order and probably the thoughts of England manager Gareth Southgate.

Kyle Walker is the first choice right back when England play a back four and is one of the back three in Southgate’s favoured formation. Reece James has also seemed to nudge ahead of Alexander-Arnold because he offers an attacking threat as well as more defensive solidity and it can also be argued that Kieran Trippier is ahead of the Liverpool player as well due to his versatility.

There is no doubting the talent of Alexander-Arnold and the fact that he is one of England’s best passers of the ball. His attacking output at Liverpool is excellent but with England he doesn't get the same freedom as he does with his club.

Southgate is criticised for being cautious but his approach has helped England reach a semi-final of a World Cup and a first final in a European Championship, so he has justification for preferring certain players. And that is without mentioning that the Liverpool defender missed the Euros with injury.

Being left out of the of the last matchday squad before the team heads to a World Cup will be a big blow and one that will be felt more because he did not come off of the substitutes bench in Italy so will leave this camp without playing a minute.

There’s no doubt that after this international break Alexander-Arnold’s place in the 26-man squad for Qatar is uncertain.

Said it before, Poch is available and for me would be a gamble worth taking. Compared to Southgate, barely a gamble frankly. Oh, and the late change worked for SA in the 2019 rugby WC.

  5. Netherlands set to host Nations League finalspublished at 11:58 British Summer Time 26 September 2022

Netherlands and Croatia have booked their place in the Nations League semi-finals, with Hungary or Italy joining them from England's group and either Portugal or Spain, who meet on Tuesday in a game that will determine the outcome of Group A2.

As the Netherlands were the only ones out of the potential qualifiers to declare an interest in hosting the finals next June, that is where the games will be played.

It's easy to forget the amazing things Gareth Southgate has done with England over the last few years. Best England manager in my lifetime. I must say though, since the Euros he has lost his way with team selection and tactics for some reason.

Tom: Minutes played this season - Fikayo Tomori - 744, Trent Alexander Arnold - 737, Harry Maguire - 280. A little confused how Southgate can quantify these decisions.

Turkey lose to the Faroe IslandsImage source, EPA

One of the results of the weekend was the Faroe Island's shock 2-1 win over Turkey in the Nations League.

Turkish media heavily criticised the loss, pointing out that the island nation had a population of only around 49,000, one in 1,726 times smaller than Turkey's 85 million.

"There are more goats than people on that island. Size doesn't matter," said Fanatik, a popular sports newspaper.

Serdar Gurler, who scored Turkey's only goal, said the atmosphere in the dressing room was similar to that of a "funeral home".

"We are incredibly sad. There is no excuse for this. Maybe we didn't want it as much as they did. We didn't fight," he said.

Graymanuk: I have to disagree with Henry Winter. You can't always equate transfer fees with actual ability. Otherwise we'd just give the World Cup to the most expensive squad. Kane Bellingham and Foden are world-class, the others are solid PL players.

  13. Guehi rated by England staffpublished at 11:18 British Summer Time 26 September 2022

    Alex Howell
    BBC Sport

The squad for tonight's England game also shows how highly rated Marc Guehi is by the England backroom team. It was a big decision to bring him up to the senior squad as he was U21 captain and they had competitive games at the time. He now seems to be ahead of Tomori, Mings, and White.

Tomas: If Southgate is sacked because we lose the Germany game, who is going to replace him so soon to the WC? It’s a no go-er. We all know it’s a matter of if not when he goes though, he’s taken us this far but he’s holding us back.

Joshua: I’ve loved Southgate at England, superb man manager to get us where he has in tournaments. But his loyalty to some of those from the last 4 years starts to become laughable. How Tomori doesn’t get into the line-up is criminal.

GrayManuk: TAA is absolutely fantastic going forward for a team that dominates most of the time like Liverpool. His defensive weaknesses don't really matter if the opposition rarely attacks. That's not the case with England who will need to defend a lot.

Nick: For those saying James and Walker are better defensively at RB than TAA. England play with wing backs, not RB's TAA is a better wing back going forward than both the above.

Fine point Gary. Going back to Trent Alexander-Arnold, he's won everything there is to win at club level. Despite being just 23, I imagine he's a key leader in the dressing room.
