Tonight's officials are Norwegian, with some VAR help from English referee Stuart Attwell.

Today marks the 100th anniversary of Jock Stein's birth, the legendary Celtic manager, who steered the club to European Cup glory in 1967 and to nine titles in a row, among many more trophies.

"He’s one of those figures that exists in football, where his impact on a football club goes beyond just the success," said current boss Ange Postecoglou this week.

"It was about the way the team played, the way they conducted themselves, the connection the team had with the fans and the connection he had with the fans.

"For guys like me, you’re not so much following in his footsteps as standing on his shoulders - and trying to uphold, hopefully, those values."

RB Leipzig have just played what I can only assume is their club anthem. Some sort of German, Euro pop tune. Quite catchy.

There was a lot of twirling of scarves, too. The atmosphere is cranking up as the Celtic drum gets going.

The teams are out. The hosts all in white (with red squiggles here and there), while Celtic are the men in black (with some green horizontal stripes).

Timo Werner has scored six goals since returning to RB Leipzig from a less than stellar couple of years at Chelsea, although that includes a hat-trick in a cup demolition of lower league opponents.

He got two at the weekend but never managed a home goal in this competition in his four years at the Red Bull Arena before his switch to London.

Now here's that worrying stat that Thomas Duncan mentioned not so long ago... Celtic have never won in 13 previous attempts in Germany.

And their overall record does not make great reading, with just four victories and 16 defeats in 25 contests home and away against teams from Deutschland.

Of course, RB Leipzig have had more recent experience of Scottish opponents, crashing out of last season's Europa League at the semi-final stage to Rangers.

Five months ago, Angelino fired in a spectacular late volley to give the Germans a home win that was overturned in a 3-1 loss at Ibrox.

These two have been group rivals once before - in the 2018-19 Europa League.

Leipzig prevailed 2-0 at home and Celtic enjoyed a 2-1 win in Glasgow, with Brendan Rodgers' side finishing second behind runaway winners Salzburg.

Celtic squandered a few opportunities to see off Shakhtar Donetsk in Poland and there was a sense of frustration after similarly good openings were not converted at home to Real Madrid before succumbing to the strength of the defending champions.

"It is really ruthless at this level," said Celtic skipper Callum McGregor on Tuesday. "Teams take their chances and when you are on top in games you need to find that little bit of quality to get yourself ahead.

"We have started the campaign well, we have learned a lot already. We are a confident group and we think we can have a positive outcome.

"We know it will be a tough match. It is a really high-level opponent that we are up against and all we can do is prepare the game plan we think can win the game, be aggressive and try to implement our style.

"We have to take our chances when we get them and do a lot of things right defensively."
